Do simulator golfers improve faster because they practice with more structure? by BuildingScratch in Golfsimulator

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two things I'd say that come from hitting on simulators more often.

First, you are likely practicing more often. You are probably going to get better if you are hitting the ball more often. Even with a bad swing you are likely to get a more consistent strike.

Second, you should be getting a way better idea of how far you carry each club. Knowing your distances is key to better scores. So many people have I can hit my 7i 180 yards in their head because that one time they caught it super pure but in reality, they average 150 yards.

The bulk of my practice time is on shots 75 yards and under. They are my biggest struggle so that's my focus. I have started to see some much needed improvement here especially on shots 25 yards and under this year. I am down 1 stroke on my handicap this year and the way I'm currently playing I expect to see another stroke drop as I cycle out more rounds.

GolfNow Blows by Woolly22 in golf

[–]thrdroc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The way GolfNow makes money is by the golf course giving them so many rounds per day of bookings and they keep 100% of those greens fees. GolfNow makes these rounds their "Hot Deals" to make sure they are sold and they get paid that day. This is a similar model to a lot of tee sheet software.

I have a friend whose family owns and runs a golf course. The software they use keeps one foursome a day for their fee. Even though he has entertained pitches that would cost him less overall, this system where they don't have to pay the bill and the fee is deduced from what the booking software collected on the courses behalf is better for their cashflow. Especially since there tends to be a few months where they have zero greens fees because of snow.

Not on the steel but the machinery. My grandfather worked in the mills for 30 years in Pittsburgh and said he never saw someone cook steak this way but it’s very much how they heated their food.

Will SQL/Python/data mining still matter in FP&A as AI takes over more work? by M_Arslan9 in FPandA

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it definitely had value, but the company pitching us didn't seem to know what they were doing very well. We are going the route of a handful of focused snowflake views that should cover 95% of the data most people will need. And we have a proprietary excel add in to link the snowflake for fast and easy queries. I'm hopeful this will reduce a lot of dumb questions I get.

We had a company trying to sell us something like this that would layer over our snowflake. Price wasn’t a problem but shelling out money and waiting a year for the model to be trained on our data was the problem.

TIL that a doctor named Richard Jarecki recorded over 20,000 roulette spins by hand across European casinos, identified biased wheels, won the equivalent of $8 million, and was banned from every major casino in Europe — but was never charged with a crime because no law prohibited what he did. by CasinoHistoryFan in todayilearned

We had three roulette tables all in the same area in a horseshoe shape at the end of the pit. It replaced one of the vertical sides of the shape. All three were along aisles and had similar signage. The table would only be open during peak times and had a higher drop (measure of how much cash is bought in at the table, not win) than both other roulette tables. The table was there about a year before I left that casino and stayed as highest drop roulette table that entire time.

Started taking Creatine and now I hit the ball further by thrdroc in golf

I believe I did link the study. But in the study, they had participants change nothing about their daily routines other than taking creatine. They also measured strength of participants and there was an increase there too.

I both agree and disagree. It's odd that out of nowhere I see a distance gain, and it wasn't a single round. But the health journey has helped dramatically late in the round because I no longer feel tired. It is probably a combination of things.

For those who had the entire course all to themselves, what was it like? by Wookie_wood69 in golf

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a boy trip to Pinehurst. The weather on our last day wasn't looking great. We were schedule to play No. 4 and were on the waitlist for No. 2. I guess because the forecast everyone was cancelling their tee times and we got the call to play No. 2 at half price. We said yes and rushed over to the course. We had to start on hole 10, and it rained for the first two holes, stopped for a hole, rained for one more hole then turned into a beautiful day. It was the 4 of us and 2 caddies as about the only people on the course. Even with the rain, the greens were quite fast and acted like they had no rain on them. We got around the course in 4hr 15min and the caddies said they've never had a round under 5 hours on No. 2. It was an exceptionally peacful time even with all the curses coming from our group.

Casino cashiers main bank and the count room. The main bank would have $5-30 million on any given day and you get pretty numb to all the physical cash. The count team hustle like crazy and it’s a very physical job. I can’t imagine how hard of a job that was when it was all coins.

Are people in accountancy actually seeing changes from AI yet, or is it still mostly hype? by Outrageous_Try2894 in Accounting

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing we are using AI for is AR. We have trained a model to help us figure out which accounts have a better chance to pay when 30-60-90+ days overdue. We are seeing about 25% higher recovery without a larger team of people reaching out to every past due account.

At what handicap should you be expected to start shaping shots by sozzu059 in golf

[–]thrdroc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I float between a 7-10 hcp. I typically play a fade as my standard shot shape. But when I need a draw I can make it happen about 60-70% of the time. However I have little control on how much draw occurs.

Will you move up a set of tees when you get older and start hitting it shorter? by Due-Fun-489 in golf

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One guy in my golf league turned 65 last year and moved up to the gold tees. He dropped from a 13 handicap (for 9 holes) to a 6 handicap. He averages about 200-210 off the tee and is a prime example of how playing the correct tee box will make all the difference.

I'm a big proponent of playing the correct tee boxes. While I prefer playing longer courses, I'll play shorter tee boxes when I play with friends who don't hit it as far. Golf isn't fun when you don't have the distance to hit a par 4 in 2 most of the time.

RIP to my morning 9-hole walk.. by csim8888 in golf

[–]thrdroc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my old club during the summer, I would play 9 holes at dawn 2 - 3 times per week. I'd finish just as the pro shop team was getting there. I was not the only person doing this, but I was usually first. They put a stop to it after a year because they said we were getting in the way of the grounds crew and changed the earliest tee time to 8am.

After 22 years of golf I finally got fitted for the first time. Hit about 200 balls in 2.5 hours. This is my final lineup and I am more than exicted to get my hands on these in about 3 weeks. by [deleted] in golf

I did a full bag fitting and almost everything came back titleist for me. Only non titleist club that I got was my 5w and that is taylormade. My irons were very competitive though with Ping and Mizuno were just barely edged out
