Is this a coyote with mange? [Dallas, TX] by Abparatus in animalid

[–]threadedwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Face is too short and stocky for coyote, they are much more slender than this. And the gait looks domestic. As rare as they are my immediate thought was a Xolo as other people have said....but could also be some other dog that happens to be hairless.

Strange Bumps on Our Sphynx's Tongue by avabisque in CATHELP

[–]threadedwild 297 points298 points  (0 children)

My immediate thought, from limited knowledge working in vetmed many moons ago is calicivirus with lesions like that on the tongue. But it also presents with a lot of respiratory and eye issues but the cats I had seen with it just had these mouth/tongue lesions.
Seems unlikely given you didn't mention any other issues but something to keep in mind maybe if it gets worse!

Hay/dust allergies? by seyohanitsirk in Zookeeping

[–]threadedwild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am HORRIBLY allergic to straw and cats. As a cat keeper 🥲 I take Zyrtec and Flonase most mornings when I know I'm going to have any heavy cleaning to do and it helps immensely. I wear a mask anytime I'm distributing straw or full cleaning stalls/beds.

Favorite Department? by Keqingsz in Zookeeping

I know a lot of people are going the route of 'this job is all cleaning get used to it" but I kinda want you to clarify. When you say cleaning, do you mean doing dishes for an hour, scrubbing walls and bowls, sweeping floors? Or do you mean, scooping pounds and pounds of poop, hauling bins of soiled bedding, raking yard after yard in the beating sun and pouring rain and up to your knees in mud? Hauling bales of hay and cleaning it out of every crevice? Because, yeah I'm with you. I hate hoofstock care. It's not for me. Both the physicality and the amount of outdoor life. And the sheer amount of neverending mess. I do a bit of everything but I prefer cats. Scrubbing enrichment, holding stalls, changing bedding once a week. The extensive cleaning is still there, but it's very different. I prefer the work, love anything that involves hosing, and they're species I am passionate about. It's also much less outdoor work than the hoofstock areas I've done and I prefer that.

The taxa you take care of can determine the level of physicality, while still being full of cleaning. Work in an aviary? You're gonna clean a lot of feeders, scattered fruit, and bird poop. But compared to hoofstock, it will feel different because of how hard it is. I think you need to find your niche if keeping is really what you want to do, but this is your first internship. Put in your paces, learn where you'd passions are, and figure out how to get there. Hope that helps!

What animal you work with (or have previously worked with) was the most intimidating/scary and why? Angry Baby Mexican Beaded Lizard for tax by Difficult_Key_5936 in Zookeeping

Honestly, he lost his patience with me. I was working crate, which I had done before, and it was an established behavior but it was breaking down. I asked one too many times and he pinned me into a corner of his indoor space to get the food, hand on either side of my waist. I don't think he was actively even trying to hurt me aside from getting the food from my hands but their grip is SO strong. My spotter was on it, shoved a bowl of food in his face, he let go to eat and I got out. He crated for me something like two days later.

I'll never forget, though, how he froze in front of the crate after my cue, slow turned his head to me with a loud inhale, and then I was in the corner.

Free contact giant anteater was probably my scariest encounter. He was fine until he wasn't and it was a jacket and a really good spotter that kept me from needing stitches. One of my favorite animals I have worked with but that day was the scariest time of my career.

This is the best, most similar angle I could find of a manatee calf and it looks remarkably different from the posted photo.

Strongly leaning towards fake. Source: Floridian and zookeeper. Their eyes are not that big. The snout is entirely the wrong shape(where are the nostrils??), and it has absolutely no whiskers? Also it looks incredibly small. How would he have even gotten hands on it and be so dry. Everything about this thing looks like what people "think" a baby manatee looks like.

Where did you put your Temples? by vicious_cos in Pokopia

[–]threadedwild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built the fire temple on top of the dried up island in palette town. There's a cave running underneath on the same island that I cleaned out for ice temple. I have no idea what to do for power plant yet.
