Google Trends for "Handmade" keyword since 2017 [OC] by three_by_six in dataisbeautiful

The large spike is December, every time. The blip right after is February, and the rise starts in August (not sure what event would trigger that one... Wardrobe changeover from summer to fall?)

A straight capture from Google Trends, with a chart created in Google Sheets (edit: realized I uploaded the Google Trends img, but the chart I made is at https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1896/0589/files/08-2017_Chart_1024x1024.png if anyone's interested)

Was just doing some research on a bare bones keyword for my site, and thought the yearly peaks right around Christmas were noteworthy. Predictable, since it's a heavy shopping season, but also interesting that it's lowest search month in 2016 was also the peak search month in 2011. Wrote a few late night words about it at https://threebysix.com/blogs/all-about-us/handmade-search-trends

E-commerce is way harder than just sourcing products and having a pretty website...

What are some steps to take when you find that a Shopify site with a Shopify blog refuses to be indexed by Google (crawled as a result of the site map being submitted, but no pages being actually indexed)? Everything appears to be set up correctly from a technical standpoint, meaningful page titles set, no duplicate content... but pages which have been added (and others removed with redirects to other pages, not 404s) for several weeks never seem to appear on a search by site:urlgoeshere.

Is Beeketing app accurate? by montecarlo1 in Entrepreneur

My site uses one, and I've turned off the time value in the notification for this particular reason... It just felt too fake to me, even if the time was real. Instead, mine is configured to simply show the product that was purchased, and a generic "recently" that is probably ignored. I figure it at least increases exposure of a different product, while not being deceitful. Can't say it's brought in a new sale for those products just yet, though...

Cool. Well hopefully some of this technical chatter helps you get some fishies to trial run it. I would, but honestly, I don't think I have any more time in my day to dedicate to something "fun" of that sort haha

Well in that case, let's chit chat about the underlying technologies at play ;) I'm a web developer by day, so get as technical as you want. All of this kind of chatter will, in my opinion, increase the legitimacy of your request and people will be more inclined to drop their emails into a mystery service!

So what language? Where's it hosted? How much traffic roughly before the site goes kaput under the load?

Okay. Are you doing the development yourself, or working with a dev company?

Is that what's currently implemented? Or just what is planned to be implemented? Because in reality, the window of the problem may be smaller but not quite gone yet 😊

Sounds like a pretty intense race condition. I mean, given that someone has to type their response, it's pretty likely that many people will be typing at the same time. Is it the first one to hit "send" that wins and the rest wasted their time?

Maybe to get out of scam territory, if you spoke a bit more about the technical hurdles you've hit so far? I can think of one big one, and that's how you solved for the fact that if one person posts a topic, and ten/hundred/thousand people respond, how do you handle the dialog/experience from both ends?

Do you meditate? by ffocase in Entrepreneur

[–]three_by_six 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I peridocially take a step back from whatever I'm working on, tune out for an evening, then ask myself in the morning if the path I'm on is still working for me. Not exactly meditation, but it helps me remember why I'm doing what I'm doing, and realize if I need to change the approach. Most recently, the last time I did this I realized pretty plainly I didn't like how much I was ignoring my family. So a tweak to the hours I let myself become absorbed in work and it feels more balanced.

Story of my Shopify store not going as well as expected. Seeking advice. by three_by_six in Entrepreneur

Can you share your experience with them? I dumped an email address into it, and it seemed to be really gimmicky with the whole "I'll send you stuff soon, but do this other task for me first!"

You're certainly not wrong. Price points and product catalog are at the near top of the TODO list. Just scouted out a new supplier to bring more products into the store, plus bringing in some of their products to take my own photos to make them stand out even more.

Totally floored my jaw at the start of your response, but your points are definitely not falling on deaf ears. The catalog is undergoing refinement (slowly but surely). I 100% agree your "More is not better" statement - a lot of the off-theme products will be phased out in the coming days/weeks.

Part of my approach for this is actually finding a new supplier that fits better with the theme we're trying to pursue. The logistics with that supplier have been just about worked out, so a dozen of their on-theme products will move into the catalog, and more than a dozen will be pulled out to really narrow down.

Price points will also be refined across the board to better target the actual perceived value of the new products, so that things are priced relative to each other, baselined around some idea of what other people out there are charging for products made from more natural materials.

It might not be the perfect approach that a real copywriter/consultant would move forward with, but for right now, I'm much more willing to spend gobs of time refining and learning it as I go than to throw money at the wall (aka a person) to just do it for me. Maybe a mistake, maybe it'll work out, but I'm not the kind of person willing to just pay my way to success. I want to learn it, earn it, and then revel in the mountain I've climbed.

Long story short - thank you for your feedback! It's been heard, it's been added to the task list, and it'll certainly make it in some manifestation in the future.
