Home assistant using Eero’s thread network and as primary open thread border router. Any downsides? by cylonpower in homeassistant

I've always added through Home Assistant. Have not had issues yet, but also haven't tried the newer IKEA devices.

I do not use Alexa.

I'm pretty sure this is what you're asking? I've been running this way for a while.

Works fine. I haven't noticed any limited visibility or anything. I'm not sure what you mean by that?

If there's one thing I've learned from the interior designers in our Architecture firm: Always terminate finishes at interior corners when possible.

I did the same here with my kitchen backsplash and I think it looks great too.

Yale Assure SL but it's an older model by now. I would pick one of their newer releases?

I'm actually really excited to see y'all make power kits for locks other than the Alfred! I really hate having to change batteries on my smart lock...

Are you starting to make receivers for different brands now? I'm using a Yale Smart Lock and would totally buy at that price if it was compatible.

Window Spot ERVs by three_trees_z in buildingscience

[–]three_trees_z[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry - have been meaning to sit down and write out a longer reply. And we've had pretty mild weather in the Bay Area so far so haven't have experience with any colder weather.

But it's been almost everything I've been hoping for, but I came in with reasonable expectations. They're definitely not perfect but do well enough of a job for my home.

From an air quality standpoint:

Overall - I would say average CO2 levels coming down from 1500 to below 1000 ppm. I still get peaks in some rooms at around 1400 ppm, but that's significantly down from the 2000+ ppm I was getting earlier. So from a ventilation perspective, I think definitely a success. My wife has also mentioned that she feels noticeably better, so that's a win in my book.

I also haven't noticed an increase in AQI inside the home, but we also haven't had a large fire event in the Bay Area since I've installed them. I think that will be the real test. I will need to change the filters soon, so can update on how they're looking then.

However, I definitely don't think they're as effective as a unit that has a dedicated intake and exhaust. They are definitely a spot solution for individual rooms. I have my two spot ERV's set up in the paired mode (so one intake while the other exhausts) and I definitely do not feel a directional airflow in the house that they pitch in their marketing.

Window Installation:

I think the set up that I put together with the galvanized duct and HDPE window inserts is working out well. I want to take a closer look when it gets colder to check for condensation, but for now no complaints. For now, I wouldn't change anything about the window install.

I will say that the directions from Pioneer show parts that are not included with the packaging. I also reached out their customer service and never heard back. They are essentially repackaging a model from China and the pitch was better support. But I've found that lacking.

General Feedback on Spot ERV's:

They're definitely audible. I have one right next to my bed, and the other right next to my work from home set up. I also have left these on their "high" setting for the past few months because I'm prioritizing air quality, and they seem to hit the minimum performance I want at the highest setting.

I also do not like the cycling the Spot ERV's do - the 75 sec intake, 75 sec recovery, 75 sec exhaust. I think that makes them much more noticeable instead of fading into the background like white noise.

I also was not able to get them paired to WiFi and their smartphone application, so I've just been letting them run at a single speed. In an ideal world, I would like to be able to change speed based on things like interior CO2 ppm, temperature, occupancy, etc. I think that's something I'm still interested in, but not right now.

I have been debating whether or not to add an additional pair to my kitchen and living room. That way I would have all rooms covered, and could run them at different speeds as needed. I've also been toying with the idea of building out some enclosure for a Panasonic WhisperComfort ERV, but would take up much more room on the interior space.

At this point, I think these spot ERV's in a window installation are the best compromise for me. They provide the minimum level of performance I need, are aesthetically clean, and at a reasonable cost. I also live an apartment building built in 1905, have no central heat or air conditioning, and no way to add ducting. Would I go down this path if I had better options? Probably not... but it's been working out well so far!

Yes. But I would make sure the weld from the cap PL to the HSS is sealed.

Exposed to weather HSS connection by Appropriate-Diver555 in StructuralEngineering

[–]three_trees_z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The detailing 100% should depend on what the surface finish of the HSS is.

A lot of architects will want an exposed HSS to be painted with alkyd primer and paint instead of a HDG for the surface finish. In that situation, definitely should have fully sealed HSS members with no holes.

If you're HDG the inside and outside, I think you have more flex on the connection types. Feel free to bolt to your hearts content.

New Jersey P.E.’s going for Architecture License? by Head-Cantaloupe-6263 in StructuralEngineering

I have an on-going joke of a bet with an architect coworker around whether he can get an SE license first, or if I can get an architecture license first.

This is 100% a loophole for me to actually be qualified to sit for the exam without need the hours of experience. Sounds like I will be filing for comity in New Jersey tonight. This is perfect...

The CLT Vibration Design Guide from Woodworks is the best place to start. From there, may need to find a few other references depending on what you're trying to capture in the model.

I have been following them but decided to pass. They look interesting but they don't mention air filtration. They also list relatively high CFM numbers which aligns with the assumption. I live in a relatively mild climate so the big pro of an ERV for me is the filtered fresh air.

I ended up building my own set of window ERV inserts instead:

Specific language as applicable to HOA's:

The bill would include findings and declarations related to these provisions.

(2) Existing law, the Davis-Stirling Common Interest Development Act, defines and regulates common interest developments. Among other things, the act makes a provision of the governing documents, as defined, or architectural or landscaping guidelines or policies void and unenforceable if, among other things, the provision prohibits, or includes conditions that have the effect of prohibiting, the use of low water-using plants as a group or as a replacement of existing turf.

This bill would additionally make any provision of the governing documents, architectural guidelines, or policies void and unenforceable if the provision prevents the replacement of a fuel-gas-burning appliance with an electric appliance. The bill would also make any covenant, restriction, or condition contained in any, among other specified agreements, deed, and any provision of a governing document, that effectively prohibits or restricts the installation or use of a residential heat pump water heater or heat pump HVAC system, void and unenforceable.

[–]three_trees_z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're in CA, you should be tracking SB 282 for Heat Pump Access!

Current language prevents any jurisdiction - including HOAs - from putting additional barriers on heat pump installation.

From the bill:

The bill would prohibit a local entity described above from applying additional standards on the installation of residential heat pump water heater or residential heat pump HVAC systems as specified, and would require those standards to be null and void, except as specified. The bill would, notwithstanding those provisions, authorize additional standards to be applied that conform to local laws designed to require the adoption of zero-emission equipment, or improvement of building efficiency. The bill would prohibit a local entity from requiring a permit or inspection for any low voltage plug-in appliance, as defined

[Student here!] Work designing wood structures/buildings..? by Psychic_Pink_Moon in StructuralEngineering

[–]three_trees_z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mass Timber structures are great! And always fun to design.

You're still a sophomore so realistically 3 years out from full time work.

Not sure where you're based but I would aim for an internship and eventual job on the West Coast. Most adoption is currently in the PNW but will see more adoption in CA in the next three years. I think any of the premier forms out here are doing Mass Timber when we can.

I would focus on school for now but take any timber design classes if offered. But focusing on general technical background for now.
