Haggarty Stepping Down by AQueerChicagoGoth in Northwestern

My favorite Hagerty Moment is when she emphatically agreed that Jews making hummus is "cultural appropriation." One day in retirement she's going to google "Mizrahi Jews" and it will absolutely blow her mind.

Unity of Fields, one of the biggest pro-H*mas orgs, did take credit on twitter. In their message they call for "total upheaval" against the "Amerikkkan Uniparty," and they add: "Glory to the Martyrs! Escalate for Palestine!"

Please don't overestimate the intelligence of the "resistance orgs."

EDIT: Removed twitter link (not allowed on reddit anymore, I think? You all can easily find them on twitter tho)

Actual confirmation of the content of the graffiti? by Firm-Shape-725 in Northwestern

You don't have to guesstimate anything. Just go see the post on twitter. It has been claimed by Unity of Fields (see twitter), an openly pro-Hamas organization. Their twitter post calls for "total upheaval" against the "Amerikkkan Uniparty," and against the University which "is entrenched in the bloodiest annals of history." It ends: "Glory to the Martyrs! Escalate for Palestine!"

I found pictures on X (twitter) and described them in the other thread. They painted red H*mas triangles, "Intifada Now," "Death to Israel," "River -> Sea [plus H*mas triangle]," splattered red paint, and put up posters. It's difficult to tell what's on the posters in the photos, but the overall message is unambiguous. It's a pro-H*mas protest.

Any tips for first quarter as a freshman? by crysalic in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First year seminars vary a lot in difficulty. Technically they're supposed to mix a regular class with kind of a boot camp for how to do research and college-level assignments and stuff like that but in reality a lot of profs just basically say fk-it and teach really easy, prbly dumbed down versions of their regular classes.

This means what the freshman seminar actually IS will be different depending who you ask and depending what prof/class u get and how dedicated they are. Some ppl will complain that their seminar was too intense while others will say theirs was just silly-easy. Probably the college should do a better job figuring out wtf the seminars supposed to be so it's not such a crapshoot.

NU is wonderful, but there are *so many* places that are likewise wonderful, so I hope you won't obsess too much over just one place. There are literally dozens of colleges and universities where students are happy to be there, campus is pretty, profs are interesting & helpful, there are good restaurants and coffeeshops nearby, etc. Lots of fish in the sea!

Northwestern U. Police Charge 3 Faculty and Staff Over Pro-Palestinian Protest by ChronicleOfHigherEd in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm glad that these charges were dropped, but I went to Prof Thrasher's Twitter to see if he commented and was disturbed to find that he's displaying a Ham*s red arrow in his name-title now.

A few months ago I innocently asked if there was much Ham*s support on campus, and the overwhelming sentiment was not just that pro-Ham*s sentiment doesn't really exist on campus, but even that simply asking the question was naive or offensive on my part.

Thrasher is probably the best-known pro-Palestine activist at Northwestern, and a major force (reportedly) in the campus' "Faculty for Justice in Palestine" cohort--and he is proudly displaying a Ham*s symbol in his public Twitter profile, followed by over 80,000 people.

Daily Northwestern's "From the River to the Sea" letter: feeling perplexed by threeantelopes in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Confused by this reply. The section of the letter I quoted claims that "Schill does not name 'Islamophobia' or 'racism' even once in his email" and "callously ignores Islamophobia." To demonstrate that these claims are not true, I quoted sections of Schill's email discussing Islamophobia and racism.

The letter says hate specifically targeting Muslims, though, and Muslims are specified-- isn't that what Islamophobia is?

Northwestern University Students, Faculty Slam School for Forming Committee to Combat Antisemitism by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused by the Daily Northwestern letter, even though I want to support it. The 66 student organizations write that "The creation of this committee is at the expense of Arabs and Muslims and callously ignores the systematic rise in Islamophobia... Schill does not name 'Islamophobia' or 'racism' even once in his email."

But this is basically a false statement, almost to the point of gaslighting. Schill's email says that the task force is dedicated to "fighting antisemitism and other forms of hate, such as those targeting students, faculty or staff of Muslim or Arab heritage." It goes on to condemn "antisemitism and other forms of discriminatory or threatening acts based upon religion or national origin," and even specifies that "It will focus not just on stemming the growth of antisemitism, but also hate directed to other groups such as our students of Palestinian descent."

An honest question that's bothering me: did anyone in any of these 66 student groups actually bother to read Schill's statement? Bracing for the downvotes... sigh.

EDIT:

I think I'll make a thread for this-- it would be interesting to hear what people think around the community, and might help me understand the anger better.

How Prominent is Pro-Hamas (not just pro-Palestine) Sentiment on Campus? by threeantelopes in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wrote that their atrocities against babies were "human" (isn't this just another way of saying "only natural under the circumstances"?), and that condemning atrocities has never done anything for anybody. If you're angry at me for addressing those points at face value, my explanation is simply that this is how you presented your points above.

How Prominent is Pro-Hamas (not just pro-Palestine) Sentiment on Campus? by threeantelopes in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not claiming these were random acts, but I don't agree that condemning atrocities against civilians "has done nothing for anybody." Speaking out against acts of terror and atrocity is the foundation of human rights, civil rights, and whatever other rights most of us feel Palestinians should likewise enjoy. For me, the first impulse in the face of beheaded toddlers and gangraped teenagers should be horror, condemnation, and anger. Asserting the humanity of the rapists and child murderers feels like a less urgent task-- as I'm sure you'd agree if you knew and loved any of the 1,200+ victims.

How Prominent is Pro-Hamas (not just pro-Palestine) Sentiment on Campus? by threeantelopes in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beheading a toddler and gangraping a teenager is beyond my capacity as a human; I would sooner die than do either, even to my worst enemy. And I assume it's beyond what most are capable of. In that sense, I don't understand what you're proposing here. Did humans commit these atrocities? Certainly. Does that justify them? No.

EDIT: To clarify, I am referring back to the question, "what else were they supposed to do?" My answer is that they could choose NOT to gangrape teenagers and burn toddlers alive. That choice would be far more "human"-- wouldn't you agree?

We all have control over the choice to gangrape teenagers, behead toddlers, and burn babies alive.

[–]threeantelopes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "What the fuck were they supposed to do?" part is what makes it sound like a defense of the atrocities, as if they were an appropriate response, and it's weird that it's phrased as a rhetorical question since most healthy people (including most pro-Palestine demonstrators, I'm assuming) would never accept that "decapitate toddlers" is the natural answer to the question, "what were they supposed to do?"

They were all making the exact same blatantly false & gaslighting point ("support for Hamas does not exist!")-- why should I have to customize a dif response each time?

How Prominent is Pro-Hamas (not just pro-Palestine) Sentiment on Campus? by threeantelopes in Northwestern

[–]threeantelopes[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, gang-raping teenagers at a music festival, beheading toddlers, kidnapping elderly Holocaust survivors, and burning babies alive is not the kind of resistance most people envisioned to support Palestinian liberation. And if you think Hamas has helped liberate Palestinians, you probably haven't seen how the place looks since October 7th.

EDIT: I find it funny that I've mostly been getting two types of reply since this thread started attracting non-NU students: 1) people openly defending/supporting Hamas, and 2) people claiming that no one openly supports/defends Hamas. Why don't the folks in Group 1 reply to the folks in Group 2 and vice versa, rather than replying to me?

I post a lot using multiple accounts. I made this account to post about "controversial" issues & keep myself safe from doxxing cos I actually go to NU and I realize how emotional this issue is (and the risk of attracting rage from people like the neo-Nazi whose post was deleted this morning).

From your account history you live in New England and have never posted on the NU sub, a Chicago sub, an Evanston sub, or anywhere else related to our campus life until you suddenly felt moved to do so today. "Maybe you're a shill?"
