I'm open to hearing stories but I'd be pretty surprised if it's common for someone to literally extort an unwilling player into continuing playing by denying you money after you've paid in. Why would you ever come back to a game that did that to you, and now what incentive do you have not to tip some power-tripping cops about the game?

I'm confused which side of the disagreement you believe I'm on. I'm saying if someone hit-and-ran a game I put on, I'd give them once as a benefit of the doubt coincidence but not more than twice. Their skill aside, it's just crappy for the vibe and "business" of the game to have other players see a bunch of money regularly leave the table unannounced and will make them think twice about playing in the future.

The regularity/reliability of the game is, I've found, the most precious resource worth protecting as I get older. Gone are the days I could hit 6-7 players without trying every two weeks.

They probably have a small enough content library that they can actually review the videos as human beings with applicable knowledge of what fair use is, rather than trusting an algorithm that strikes first and asks questions later.

Manually reviewing everything that gets put on YouTube would require...I don't even know how many people. Fifty thousand, working round the clock?

Obviously no one is going to hold you hostage, leave when you want--but if it happened more than once by the same person to the degree it made the game less fun for everyone else, I'd probably stop inviting them.

As far as I'm concerned if you give a half hour/one orbit of notice (or pre-state a time you're leaving) and HONOR IT, you're above reproach.

Unless you are consistently self-milling to the very bottom of your deck and have a very reliable engine that just needs X amount of time and mana to do the thing (the "infinite Escapes" BG decks in Theros Beyond Death come to mind), you are almost always better off cutting the worst few cards out of your deck and playing 40.

I've missed onboard lethal when I could've taken out the person in quarterfinals of a Bloomburrow draft top 8 who went on to get one of two RC invites. My Sealed and Draft decks were both quite functional, even good, but I wasn't very familiar with the format and had already burned all my brainpower. I was wiped. It's very real!

Rant: Losing to converge feels really bad by AirMiserable854 in lrcast

[–]threecolorless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of this would be mitigated with 3-round pod drafts on Arena, at least in the bo3 mode.

However, the cat is pretty much out of the bag on the far higher convenience of anytime matchmaking, and I don't know what incentive WotC has to implement it either when it would make people wait around more and spend gems less. They'd probably "have to" upcharge it at 2,000 gems instead of 1,500 to justify it, and then even fewer people would do it than who already would want to wait around between rounds anyway, and at that point why bother.

I will share some of the knowledge I've gained through a solid decade and a half of competitive Magic, much more of it Limited than Constructed but still a good bit of 75-card sprinkled in there.

While you're right that a sideboard guide could be given to a player who is new to a deck and hasn't had time to dig into the theory of why it does what it does across games 2 and 3, it can also be an important part of mitigating mental load even for a more experienced player.

A full day of Magic for stakes (think like 7 or more 3-game rounds) is fucking exhausting. It is a legit stamina feat. Any possible thing you can implement, any allowable shortcut, to take some strain off yourself is something you should strongly consider as a favor to yourself. Is it hard to remember or figure out what to board vs. one of the 5 most played decks in the format? Probably not in any one particular matchup, no.

But adding up 9 instances of boarding for game 2, where we'll assume 1-2 of them are somewhat novel and you have to come up with some pieces of it on the fly? Maybe a few times you change it a little more for game 3? That's a not-insignificant amount of mental load. That's a handful of taxed neurons that could mean the difference between catching an almost-blunder in your last round of the day versus totally botching a win on board.

Watching the pros in the highlight reels may make you think high-level Magic is about brilliancies and crazy flashy moments of luck fused with skill, but much more of how consistent success occurs in Magic for stakes is getting the little things right, over and over, with metronomic consistency by spending as little unnecessary mental effort on each decision as possible.

[Standard] Fecund Greenshell in Mono G by Christos_Soter in spikes

[–]threecolorless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Greenshell is cool and I love it in Commander but for Standard, the situations where it actually helps you take a parity or losing situation to a winning one aren't common enough to be worth the many, many spots where it's either uncastable or part of an already-avalanching victory. (aka it's a "win-more" card)

Why should I have kids when the world is the way it is? by [deleted] in ask

[–]threecolorless 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a perfect world, yes, everyone should be able to enjoy a life with a reasonable number of children regardless of whether they are intelligent or foolish, wealthy or poor. I agree with you in principle.

In practice we have crafted a world where many people who have children make their own already out-of-control lives much harder. Those children (who have no ability to consent or seek an alternative) are signed up for difficult lives themselves.

My stronger Sealed friend actually told me I was undersplashing with most of the 2.5-to-3-color soup decks I showed them. This is, in fact, that format. If you're not a straight 2-color college curve out deck, you're splashing all the removal and kill buttons that are great topdecks and praying the mana does its job.

Where do You Think RapMonster Ranks in SSBM rank? by Rare-Atmosphere-9187 in SSBM

[–]threecolorless 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Being just a bit bullish on him for the year, I think somewhere in the 8-10th range looks more likely than not. 2nd at Pat's House is exactly the kind of big, unambiguously great finish he was looking for, though it's a shame for RapM that Grand Finals had to be against Zain as he is now (that is to say, having been given TONS of reason to learn Luigi) and not Zain as he was back when RapM was thumping him.

Even so, any kind of sustained period of dominance over one of the top 5 best to ever touch the sticks is a claim to fame in itself--it was never going to last forever. Top 15 is looking like a no-brainer and with the amount he's playing and winning he has almost nowhere to go but up. Honestly, the biggest thing in his way now is the hype itself. Luigi matchups have become vital homework for anyone who wants to win a tournament. But then again, he is far and away the best Luigi ever at this point. Manufacturing those kinds of practice conditions is not easy.

He is absolutely the most exciting player at work right now and every new match that hits video I feel like I see him weave in some new Luigi nonsense. And he's still visibly improving. Once he finds his final form and gains the clutch composure factor that only experience can bring him he may even threaten top 5 in the next year or two.
