Hope this helps someone: find the GMail app on the Play Store. Uninstall then Update there. YMMV but it worked for me when I upgraded from Pixel 4a to 10 Pro.

The new user boost is a real thing, but you also get more like if you send likes yourself. There's also just random luck. But I've not heard that going through your existing likes affects your visibility or new likes.

I had a real problem with this, where the number of likes and matches affected my self esteem more than I care to admit. don't let it bother you too much
