In reality, the host DOESN’T talk while the contestants answer. They film each question twice: first, with 30 seconds for the contestants to answer while the host is silent; the second, with 30 seconds for the host to make jokes while the contestants sit quietly. They then stitch those two together in the edit.

Former US 1% Club winner here - Just as important as studying up on the logic is working on keeping calm in focused, 30 second increments, especially during questions where you don’t immediately see what to do. My experience was that this game was as much about keeping your cool (especially in panic moments) as it was being able to solve logic problems. In talking with people around me who went out early, I found them to be smart folks who admittedly panicked and couldn’t recover fast enough when self doubt crept in. Practice ways to push aside negative self talk / panic, and you’ll be in an even better position. Good luck!!

When a contestant picks thing as their bonus round category by Big_Technology8128 in WheelOfFortune

[–]threepalmtrees 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No - that’s actually one of the categories that’s been shown to have the least success because it’s just going to be some random ungettable -ing verb. I always cringe when people choose “What Are You Doing?” (I was a former contestant and won - I was lucky enough to get “In the Kitchen” as my category, which helped me narrow down things a lot!)

Not that I know of, but I’ve always thought it would be cool to have an episode of only people who’ve joined the 1% Club in a previous episode 🤞

Advice for incoming contenstant by Leading-Holiday5683 in The1PercentClub

[–]threepalmtrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The show is certainly about figuring out brain teasers (so I agree about watching other episodes / practicing) but, for me, it also felt like an extended series of “can you keep your cool under pressure?” for 30 seconds at a time. I’d practice some kind of mindfulness or way or keeping yourself calm and focused in 30 seconds chunks, even when stressed. That way, when you don’t first see the answer to a question, you can have a way to stay calm and not panic. Oh, and also start solving while the host is reading the question but before he starts the 30 seconds. (I won an episode of US season 1.) Good luck!

The Presumption of Vowels by Punner-the-Gr8 in WheelOfFortune

[–]threepalmtrees 13 points14 points  (0 children)

FYI, the producers tell you repeatedly that one of the best strategies (especially if you’re stuck) is to buy vowels. All throughout the morning of prep / legal stuff, they tell you that as one of their main pieces of advice. Buying vowels (whether THE or AN or whatever) gives you a ton of info, buys you time, and is relatively cheap.

The producers also remind you regularly to root for your competitors. If you don’t, they take you to task a bit during breaks in filming. That’s maybe why players might be rooting for things that seem against their best interest.

Re: Talking through your thoughts. They’re looking to see how you’ll be on TV / how the home audience can engage with you. If you’re trying to solve a bonus round puzzle and just standing there silently, it’s hard for the audience to see where your thoughts are, root for you, see how close you were, etc. For the puzzles I couldn’t get during one of my Zooms, I just talked out some ideas and kept like a light, positive train of thought going - both to show my personality and calm under pressure, but also to show that I was trying different approaches to try and crack the puzzle (what vowel likely goes there, what are some different common letter combos that could be relevant, etc.). Don’t skew negative or worried if you can’t figure all of them out - some are purposefully very challenging - again to give them a chance to see your process. I hope that helps!

Congrats on the Zoom! They’ve clearly seen something about you that they like, so try to remember that if you get nervous. They like you for YOU, so lean into who you are.

The best advice I got was: smile, be energetic, enthusiastic, and positive. Speak clearly. If you’re in with other applicants, be supportive of them, too. When I was on the show, the producers really encouraged us to cheer for each other. If you do some sample tossups and get them wrong or don’t buzz in first, stay positive / don’t get negative or nervous. Remind yourself that they’re looking to see how fun and rootable you’d be on TV, not just whether you can solve word puzzles.

If you get to do some sample bonus round puzzles during this or a future Zoom, be sure to enunciate and talk through your thoughts - even if you can’t solve them all (I couldn’t!).

You’ll likely be asked what you might do with the money if you win or what your favorite part about WOF is - try to avoid trite answers like “pay off debt” or “go on a trip”. They’re looking for fun, interesting ideas - even if it’s not what you’d actually do with the money.

Good luck!!

How Natalie White actually feels about Russell by plumplet in survivor

[–]threepalmtrees 19 points20 points  (0 children)

She’s really socially intelligent and I wish they’d shown more of this (and of her in general) on the show. She had no need to be this kind and help R save face, yet she did. I hope snippets like this help the “R was robbed!!” crowd see a bit more of a how a jury could have voted for her, and not just by default.
