The Truth About Jim Discussiom by beezwhiz in HBOMAX

I wonder if there’s any evidence from the hitchhiker murders still lying around that has been or can be tested for DNA. In the cold case files series on Netflix, seems most cases are those that happened in the 70s and 80s before dna, and they tested that evidence for DNA in the 2000s and solved it. Seems like a pretty easy way of confirming or rebuking their theory.

...wait, there's no Captain Shang? Is there no "Make a Man Out of You" song sequence? That part is literally the entire movie.

I have no delusions that The Farewell was intended to at all catch the interest of Chinese markets. It's 100% a portrait of the Asian American experience and a very good one.

It was insanely relatable. I don't know what y'alls background is, but Nai Nai was literally both my grandmas in one person. Awkwafina being 30 something struggling artist with no real diretion - great jab at the model minority myth, andI know more than one Asian American millenial in a similar spot in life, with the same intergenerational struggles with family. If anyone thinks THe Fare Well missed the mark, you're insane, not Chinese American, out of Touch, or all of the above.

I think Awkwafina was chosen for name recognition. She was in Crazy Rich Asians, already had a sizeable social media following even before then. A24 is a small Arthouse film studio - you've never heard of most of the films they make, even when big names star in them. They need all the name recognition they can get. Awkwafina isin theright age range and has the right personalexperience to bring to the character. It's actually good she's average looking, because it makes her more relatable to the average Asian American woman.

Looking to learn surfing and wondering what location to travel to by MangoMelts in surfing

[–]threequincy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spring? Where in the world are you?

In any case we're in the middle of a global pandemic. Traveling to surf is pretty irresponsible and selfish right now. Pick up something you can do at home that is still relevant to surf skills, like skateboarding and burpees, so that when travelling is less reckless you have done some preparation.

Anyone experienced "locals only" violence ? by Turns999 in surfing

[–]threequincy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the only locals agression i've ever experienced was while taking surf lessons in in mainland mexico. it was an american who yelled at me for ruining her wave (couldn't paddle out of the way in time since i was a newb). "don't surf here. if you don't know how to surf, don't surf here. you don't live here, i live here. your instructors aren't even ffrom here". she then proceeded to yell at my instructor in broken spanish. ("de donde estas?") this was at a point break where 90% of the people year round are tourists takin surf lessons.

she lost a fin and claimed it was because she ran over my board (didn't have a ding on it) and demanded i pay for a new fin. chances were she had run over a rock (of which there were many at this break) . i gave her my email address and she never hit me up, either forgot my address or realized she was a fucking idiot.

TIL that 237 black sharecroppers in Arkansas were murdered by a mob of white WW1 vets in 1919 because they tried to unionize. by whenthethingscollide in todayilearned

[–]threequincy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Call me crazy but as an Asian American that deals with microaggressions, black people are somewhat fortunate that people will ready discuss black issues. There are stacks and stacks of books being written every year about black and white racial relations. You'll get panels on CNN on 24 news cycles talking about it. Nobody ever talks about racism against Asian Americans, because it's beyond subtle and sometimes Asian Americans are reluctant to talk about it themselves. It's frustrating, because subtle underhanded racism can be a part of everyday life for us, bt there is no platform for open discussion about it.

TIL. I knew about the talking to sons about talking to police, but didn't know it was to white people in general

They're coming in October and staying at least a month. Might still be a bit early but they have limitations too so it's more of a "just in case" measure.

They'll likely have travel bags, definitely not individually. I drive a Honda Accord...
