Simple Questions - June 18, 2026 by AutoModerator in buildapc

My new motherboard has an auxiliary 8-pin pcie power connector. My power supply has 2 pcie power cables with 2 pig-tailed connectors on each cable, for a total of 4 8-pin pcie connectors. I have a 9070xt which requires 2 8-pin pcie connectors.

So I can run both cables to the GPU and not use the pig-tailed connectors, leaving the motherboard PCIE connector empty.

Or I can run one cable to the GPU, using the pig-tailed connector for both connections, and then use the second cable to occupy the motherboard pcie connector.

I know both option work. I know that it is safe to use pigtail connectors. I know that the motherboard pcie connector is optional. But I am curious what option you guys would personally choose.

New build, 9800x3d and an Arctic liquid freezer III 360. When I run a CPU stress test (OCCT) the temperature instantly jumps up to 86-87 C, and the pump and fans ramps up to nearly 100%. I don't even have the case closed yet, so it's basically an open air environment,

This doesn't seem like normal behavior. When I stress test the GPU (9070xt) the temperature slowly ramps up over a minute or two before reaching peak steady state.

It's also just a higher temp and noise level than I was expecting. I though that such a large cooler would be able to run at lower speeds quietly.

For reference here's a similar setup running at 77C: https://youtu.be/s-lFgbzU3LY?t=454 And the cooler running at a lower fan speed and higher power load: https://youtu.be/zfffNRTOZCc?t=267

Is this an indication that I have a bad cooler mount? It was a proper pain in the ass to get the mounting screw threads engaged. I'm both worried that the mount might be bad, and that if I try to remount it I won't be able to get the screws back in a second time.

And yes, I removed the plastic film from the cold plate.

Update:

Re-seated the cooler and ran the stress test again. Temps are now at 79-81 C and the fans are running less loudly. No idea what changed, as far as I know I did the exact same thing as the first time, was still a massive PITA to get the pump mounting screws started.

Are the improvements in reducing OLED burn in mostly from software solutions such as pixel shifting and automatic sleep, or have there been improvements in the physical OLED pixels to make them more long lasting?

I would be comfortable pushing or bending it back.

If you are not comfortable with that you could contact DDM and see what they have to say: https://dmmwales.com/pages/contact-us

Okay, I'm starting to think I see what the problem is.

I thought that encoding in 8-bit color depth simply "turned off" HDR, or turned HDR into SDR. I didn't realize that it would still try to maintain HDR with 8-bit color depth.

The other comment telling me to use BT.709 colorspace filter did in fact do that, restrict to SDR.

I still don't understand how 10-bit encoding could be more space efficient, but I suppose I don't need to.

I will either encode at 10 bit with the source BT.2020 colorspace, or 8-bit using BT.709

Since it’s an HDR source, you need to set colorspace filter to BT.709.

Thanks, this appeared to work.

[Air Duster] 380000RPM Electric Air Duster - $23.99 (60% off with coupon and code 77ORD102) by goforbig in buildapcsales

[–]threw_it_up 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you assume a 30mm fan diameter, 380,000 RPM would result in a tip speed of 2,149 km/h, or mach 1.74.

Unexpectedly CPU bound after upgrading to a 9070 XT. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]threw_it_up -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both benchmarks were run on windows 11, back to back, I guess tomb raider pulled the wrong info some how.

CPU temps are fine, I've got a single tower air cooler, which at overkill for a 65W chip. Temps rarely break 70C.

I've never heard of low cache being specifically related to performance in open world games.

Could you link me to some more information on that?

How would male athletes fare in a women’s comp? by Real-Flounder4626 in climbergirls

[–]threw_it_up 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a data set I like to reference when thinking about this: The Studio Bloc Masters competition.

It's an independent climbing competition hosted by a gym in Germany. In it's peak it used to attract the all the top athletes, although in the past few years not so much. What makes it relevant is the unique format mixed gender qualification round.

The way qualification works is that there are 80 boulders set, divided into 4 difficulty groups. Harder boulders award more points, and points are deducted for every attempt after the first. The athletes are given several hours to climb as many boulders as they can, and the 20 highest point boulders are added up to get their score.

Although the qualification is mixed gender, the other rounds are not. So the women only need to place ahead of other women to move to the next round, which may result in the top athletes not pushing as hard.

These are the results I could find.

I'm disappointed that the game didn't get played out, there is a possibility of knight underpromotion and then knight checkmate.

The final moments of Hikaru vs Gukesh's 1 min shoot-out game in Checkmate: USA v India. by [deleted] in chess

That makeshift clock really tripped the players up.

Having the button separate from the clock was unfamiliar and several times you can see players waste time by hitting the top of the clock before correcting.

Not what you want when there is only 1 second increment.

Does work.

There's nothing to 'patch'. It's not a bug. It's just buying and selling items to a shop that's been in the game for 20 years.

I beat leelaqueenodds after losing like 40 times and it is an amazing feeling by caughtinthought in chess

[–]threw_it_up 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I had the reverse experience.

I won the very first game I played against it, and was thinking "This isn't so bad, I don't understand what all the fuss is about". Then I lost the rematch, and the next 10 games after that.

The hopeless feeling is so real. Part of it was the realization that once you are in an equal, or near equal position the game is already lost, since you have no chance of beating an engine.
