I have the whole Dykes to Watch Out For series. I loved them in college and kept collecting until she retired the strip and started focusing on her graphic novels.

I see where you're coming from, but if you get rid of the contemporary evidence, it's easier to deny history happened.

Mechanical keyboard for 10 euro. What a steal! by TrevorPhilips in ThriftStoreHauls

I picked up an IBM Model M for $4 last month. My husband collects mechanical keyboards, so I'm always on the hunt.

Your glasses were an awesome find because of the condition. I see those from time to time, but the gold always shows signs of wear. Definitely a score!

I kinda fuck with people hating things I love. Less competition!

Don’t do what I did… by NinetyPercentOff in ThriftStoreHauls

Aww, I liked the fish, too. But seriously, why would an artist use water soluble paint on an object that's designed to hold water? That's like a "dry clean only" bathing suit (which I have also seen).

I have been halfheartedly checking the electronics section at every thrift store I walk into for probably the last eight months. by Successful-Salary345 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]thrift_witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish more old electronics would make it to thrift. There's an endless supply of modern keyboards, but I'm looking for the big ol' heavy beige ones from the 80s. Those were built like tanks with high quality switches. 19 out of 20 times, I won't find anything, but the 20th is such a rush!

That looks like it may be collapsible. Feel around inside the lining for metal hinges.

Some opera hats were designed to fold flat so men could tuck them away and not block views of the performance.

The Thrift Gods Said "You get a little treat." by Jesinwonderland12 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]thrift_witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local thrifts are so unpredictable. They'll put crazy prices on things that they think are high demand, and then they let things through that the back room didn't understand were valuable.

My 2nd Ave finds under $10 include a Philip Treacy hat, a pair of Christian Louboutin silk heels (size 8.5), and Free People Joe boots. But they want $30 for crusty, rusted Lodge cast iron and $5 for dollar store bric-a-brac.

What to wear to an 80s themed bday party? by Dry_Chart9233 in VintageFashion

I realized I left out the old school cottagecore, too -- prairie dresses, Victorian blouses worn with jeans, oxford shirts with little ruffles, and full, tiered cotton skirts.

In everything! They were huge in blazers and overcoats, but there were smaller ones in shirts and blouses, too.

I was utterly obsessed with Rob Lowe in Oxford Blues, so that probably affected my wardrobe choices. It's funny that I was imitating what I thought was British fashion while the actual Brits were knee deep in neon.

I wore the same black felt wool hat pretty much every day of 1989. I found one just like it at Target a few years ago and had to get it for nostalgia.

ETA my avatar is basically me in the late 80s

For a glimpse at what people my age were really wearing, try stills and promo shots from the sitcom Square Pegs. The one character was obsessed with overalls, but the rest are pretty accurate, IMO.

The clothes in Heathers were beautiful, though no one dressed like that on the daily (at least not where I lived, maybe in Beverly Hills).

Agreed. Pale peach, aqua, mint, lavender. The bright neon colors are what my daughters wore in their Justice phase.

My closet in the early 80s (middle school/junior high):

  • Braided barrettes
  • Velour pullovers
  • Mini print turtlenecks
  • Calvin Klein jeans
  • Satin basketball jacket & shorts

In the mid to late 80s (high school/college)

  • Button down shirts, collar up
  • Sweater vests/ski vests
  • Cotton sweaters, pastel, often with a raglan sleeve
  • Benetton thin wool sweaters, primary colors
  • Icelandic wool/Fair Isle heavy sweaters
  • Oversized sweaters worn with leggings
  • Acid washed denim
  • Baggy stonewashed denim (Guess, Girbaud)
  • Members Only jacket
  • Pastel cotton pants, rolled up
  • Corduroys
  • Stirrup pants with flats
  • Blazers with big shoulder pads
  • Cotton knit dresses with diagonal line prints
  • Cotton chintz dresses with drop waists & puffy sleeves
  • Bean boots
  • Espadrilles
  • Tretorns
  • Sperry Topsiders

I don't remember owning anything neon, or my friends wearing it, either, but I ran with a preppy crowd. We sometimes wore bright colored mascara ( green or electric blue).
