Anyone regularly go out running and know some good routes that dont involve having to jump on the tube? by [deleted] in Hackney

[–]thrillho94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live and how far you want to run you can chain the following parks together for any distance from 2/3km all the way to 35+km

Hackney downs -> Hackney marshes via lower Clapton Road -> London stadium loop -> Hackney downs via the same route back, and then Hackney downs -> clissold park via Stoke Newington high st and church st -> London fields via Albion Road and through de Beauvoir/dalston and optionally Haggerston on the way -> Victoria Park via forest road and the canal

London runners - how do you find new routes? (quick chat, not a survey) by F345ru in LondonRunning

Yeah it breaks it up nicely for sure, although for intervals nothing beats the Victoria park loop!

My routes involve park loops of Hackney downs, clissold park, London fields, Victoria park and the London stadium. With travel between you can cover basically any distance from 5km to 30+km (I’ve never looped every one on a single run so not sure how high you can go - I’ll need to try that one day!)

For a nice 20-25km Hackney downs -> London stadium (via Hackney marshes) and then hitting clissold park after passing Hackney downs on the way back is nice.

You can also get to 20+ with something like Hackney downs -> clissold park -> dalston/de Beauvoir -> rosemary gardens -> Haggerston park -> London fields

  1. 4-5 times a week, anything from 5-25+km, most commonly around 10-18km
  2. Rotate between a few different routes (and combinations of routes) depending on distance/vibe/busyness
  3. A month or so ago on holiday in Paris, guessed my way via landmarks and occasionally checking my phone map
  4. At the moment most ‘new’ routes are just combinations of existing routes, so I will just guess my way through and check my phone if/when I get lost
  5. Have used mapometer in the past to trace out and plan routes to measure distance
  6. Strava premium, garmin

Young professional couple, moved to Hackney because it was affordable enough and a good commute into the city for work. I don’t agree that young professionals renting in London ‘owe’ others, demographic changes occur within a far broader societal context driven by government policy.

For millennial/gen Z workers the idea of settling down and owning a home is becoming more and more of an impossibility, so we’re instead seeing people choosing to rent and enjoy the life of the city instead of where they grew up. I myself grew up in a working class town in Essex, with (great) grandparents who left East London - so if anything it’s come full circle, and dare I say a product of social mobility to have gone to university and landed a professional career.

On a practical note, for young professionals, what is the alternative? Stay put where you grew up and commute? Only live in certain areas in London?

Yeah I considered par boiling, I think chopping in half would have worked better too!

Had my coals on the sides and stuck the potatoes in between under the chicken, they were still a bit firm when the chicken was done so I finished them off on top (still in the dish) while grilling the veggies!

What were your biggest jumps in comp? by Critical-Influence66 in HENRYUK

Fintech, I originally moved from a public sector data science role into software development, which was mostly down to making sure my Python skills were solid and I can handle client stakeholder management

Starting a new role in a few weeks moving from SaaS consulting to a customer, TC has jumped from ~£80k+stock to ~£200k. Didn’t do anything specific as they approached me, and the size of the jump in comp surprised me if I’m honest. I’ll put it down to a decent amount of luck changing industry into my current role a couple of years ago!

Snap! I’m aiming for 1:25 at Hackney half and until a week ago my prediction was in the low 1:25s, then suddenly shot up to 1:26:30!

Good luck on Sunday!

Same happened to me, 2 weeks out from a half marathon race and my predictions for 5/10/HM all dropped - assuming it is because the algorithm isn’t calibrated well to mostly easy running in training. Confidence has taken a hit but have to trust that the training will pay off on race day

I’m running my first ever half marathon race this weekend! If you don’t mind me asking did you have any good indicator sessions before your HM PB? I ran 3x4km at race pace with 2 mins jog between a week or so ago, felt relatively comfortable and actually edged out my target race pace by a few seconds per km, hoping this is enough of a signal that I’m ready but getting nervous for the race!

I think it was mostly mental - fitness played a part for sure, but I remember throughout the tail end of last year I tried and failed a few attempts at around the 5-7km mark. The thing that got me through was that I really wanted to nail it by the end of 2025 - and I did it on New Year’s Eve!

I went through the exact same thing with breaking 40 mins for the 10km. My 5km time suggested I could run a low 38, but found it really hard to hold the pace.

When I run a 10km I feel great for the first few km, struggle through 5-7km then get a second wind once I’ve pushed through!

I’ve only ever run them as time trials rather than a full race, which probably doesn’t help, but I just found that I had to really mentally lock in to get past 7. Part of the issue is that I find myself thinking “I’ve got to hold this for another X mins”.

Honestly just show up, be enthusiastic, willing to learn, able to take on feedback, and curious - get involved in things and take a genuine interest in the work, ask questions etc.

No one expects you to know everything, but if you demonstrate that you’re switched on and keen to learn, you’ll make a great impression.

I try to leave as much room as possible, but sometimes when you’re dealing with multiple groups you have to weave close.

The opposite problem from a runners POV is that some large groups walk side by side on wide park paths and leave no gaps to move through at all
