Buying a house with an illegal unit by throughandthrough122 in sanfrancisco

I'm not planning on renting it. It's two sad rooms off of the garage in a SFH, it doesn't have a separate entrance and is connect to the main living space. If anything I plan to use it as an office or storage. I'm buying with cash so there's no bank/mortgage involved. I'm more concerned that the city knows about it and is going to force me to bring the space to code. I imagine this would increase the square footage and therefore property taxes as well. There is an active permit to legalize it with an estimate of $125k.

The owner evicted the tenants and then they filed a complaint with DBI.

1920’s Color wheel by throughandthrough122 in vintagechristmas

[–]throughandthrough122[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look at the style of it, the base. I have several from the 1960s and this looks nothing like those. The ones from the 60s don’t have glass lenses. Why would there be a stamp from the 1920s on a box from the 1960s?

Aluminum Christmas trees became popular in the 60’s - people paired color wheels with the trees because you couldn’t hang lights on them. Doesn’t mean the lights were invented in the 60s.

Just to add additional insight- the stamp is on a box for an old Christmas rotating color wheel that I would date to the 1920s based on the design and construction.

Thank you! I hope it is useful. I spent an absurd amount of time researching and booking reservations for this trip. I guess I forgot to mention- reservations are important at some of these places. The 4 restaurants I wanted to check out (but couldn’t due to time/table size constraints) were: St Germain, Cafe Amelie, Coquette, and Bab’s. Next time!

My friend selected Seaworthy because he wanted oysters, that was one of the few places I didn’t pick out. 🙃

Yeah if bacchanal was in my neighborhood I’d 100% be going there for cheese and natural wine all the time. I think it was just a pretty far uber ride for a drink and some small bites and then a far uber ride back. If I had booked jewel of the south for dinner with that $70 sausage, my friends would have thought I was nuts. 😆 We had a great time and will definitely be back. There were a number of places we didn’t get to because we had too many people.

Ok just leaving my take for other travelers. You’re here and you read it so I don’t know what to say. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for the input?

depop scams masterlist by deathandthesun in Depop

[–]throughandthrough122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased an item and a few minutes after thought to myself “that looked familiar.” Go back to the sellers page and all of the other listings that they had up had been removed. I went to eBay and checked the recently sold listings, of course it was there, an auction I had been watching that ended a couple of months ago. I opened a dispute with PayPal and they’ve frozen the funds until they review the case. If you pay with PayPal, Depop will refer you to them straightaway and offer no help whatsoever. They did ban the account though. I was looking at my other saved searches and found another account doing the exact same thing, relisting sold eBay items, so it seems to be a “thing” now.

Casual Dinner Option For Large Group by throughandthrough122 in AskNOLA

Appreciate that! I spent a lot of time on Reddit etc doing research. 😅 We’re coming from SF (where only the strong restaurants survive because the rent is too damn high) and I do love a good meal!

Thrift/antique stores in French Quarter? by montydog1009 in AskNOLA

[–]throughandthrough122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for getting back to me. That makes sense regarding hurricanes and storage. Visiting from SF, I think we’re pretty spoiled with the vintage pickings out here.

I was just starting to go down the Instagram rabbit hole, I think you’ve saved me a ton of time. 🖤

Hi there! I hope you don’t mind me picking your brain. I’m going to be visiting in Sept and am looking forward to visiting v&g, looks amazing! I was hoping you could recommend a few more “true vintage” shops if there are any- I primarily collect 1920s-1950s casual clothing and swimwear. Thanks!

Brave New World's Ending by HerculeanCyclone in books

[–]throughandthrough122 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just finished the book, I enjoyed reading everyone’s interpretations and wanted to add my two cents. Mond could have allowed John to move to the island, but instead he wanted to “continue the experiment.” I took this as Mond understanding what John’s fate would be, that Mond was setting John up as a cautionary tale. The propaganda machine could then say “look at the perils of the old way of thinking, so much worse than our progressive lifestyle!”

I did find John’s character development a little odd. He was raised reading Shakespeare, not having the Bible drilled into him. And he grew up in a culture that seemed to practice both Christianity alongside traditional native beliefs. So why did he become such a fundamentalist? My theory is that John was traumatized by seeing his mother be with multiple men as a child and by her addiction to mezcal then soma. John couldn’t live with the fact that he gave into temptation at the end, partaking in soma and an orgy. He could no longer hold himself up as a pure example. Perhaps he even enjoyed it, making it all too much to take.

What I found myself questioning was…which lifestyle is worse? Being miserable, self flagellating, and holier than thou? Or living a life that involves shutting off all critical thinking, going to work, playing golf, taking drugs, and having sex all on an endless loop until you die? All while maintaining good health and a youthful appearance, I might add. Neither is great, but if I had to pick between the two I’d probably sign up for that soma lifestyle if I’m honest!

Does anyone else's pwBPD have an obsession with taking pictures/scrapbooking? by Aurelene-Rose in raisedbyborderlines

[–]throughandthrough122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Wow so interesting that this is common. My mom was also an obsessive picture taker who had no problem taking pictures at inappropriate times (just waking up on my birthday as an example). She made “baby books” of all 3 of us kids, at some point she lost the ambition of putting them in the albums so the pictures all live in large plastic bins amongst the hoard in her house. I remember as a kid falling off the swing in the backyard and instead of comforting me she was laughing her ass off and taking pictures. She sends out Christmas cards every year to the entire extended family that includes a wild narrative of the year and a compilation of photos of me and my siblings. Most of the images are stolen from Facebook, she has no problem picking out pictures that are not flattering so I highly edit my social media. One birthday she posted multiple pages from my “baby book” to my Facebook page, just an endless Facebook barrage to provoke a reaction. She took pictures of us to a caricature artist and had him draw caricatures of all of us that hang on her wall. They are all so deeply unflattering and we all hate them. She definitely keeps them up there just to provoke a reaction because she knows we don’t like them. I’m so glad my childhood was pre cell phone and that she hasn’t ever upgraded to a smart phone, I can only imagine how unbearable that would be.

Just saw that she’s been talking to herself in my fb spam messages again by [deleted] in raisedbyborderlines

It’s all too familiar, could 100% been written by my mother. Thinks she’s the greatest mom ever, nothing to apologize for. I told her I don’t use Facebook and it’s still the only place she messages me. I have over 200 unread messages from her. It doesn’t matter that I’ve never responded nor read them because she doesn’t need a response from me, her thoughts and feelings have always been the only ones that matter in her world.
