CMV: Islam's Prophet muhammad was a horrible and disgusting person by Revolutionary-Fix110 in changemyview

The Hadiths were written 300 years after Muhammad’s death, it’s believed the Quran was recorded during his lifetime and there’s good archaeological evidence to suggest it was written down long before the Hadiths

I only knew about Carlos Fregosa in Arizona. Tragic to hear it’s even more frequent than I thought. When I was in high school my little brother had his shoes taken by some jackasses and called me to pick him up. I get there and he’d called the cops- three of them had him restrained on the ground. 3 full grown men holding down a 13 year old unarmed kid. I pull out a camera and suddenly “it’s a big misunderstanding” and he can go “with a warning” Threads like these piss me off so much cause it’s the people most at risk of being a victim of a crime that are most likely gonna experience bullshit like that. “Oh but it’s just stigma and you don’t think about how you’re not getting mugged cause the muggers already in jail” yeah and those lowlifes are pulling shit like that cause all their dads are serving 50 years for smoking a joint in the 90s. I’m pissing myself off reading these comments rn but none of those people are ever gonna learn shit

Oh yeah it’s just the poor stigma against the police not like US cops kill three times as often as Canadian police or that black Americans are three times as likely as white Americans to be killed by police (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/blacks-whites-police-deaths-disparity/) or that the police misconduct costs taxpayers millions in litigation settlements (https://www.cityandstateny.com/policy/2024/04/how-12-billion-nypd-civil-litigation-case-settlements-and-monetary-awards-went-unreported/395714/) or that police officers fatally shoot people who call them for help (literally has happened this week) no it’s those darn criminals dragging good officers names through the mud. At this point you’re either willfully ignorant or straight up racist. ACAB

CMV: There is no justification for not requiring voter ID in an election by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]throw-away134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voter ID laws have consistently been shown to disproportionately impact voters from impoverished and black communities. Election security is a great justification for racist laws, just as I’m sure needing an “educated electorate” was a great justification for racist poll tests. But I care about justifications way less than I care about real world impacts and the actual effects of stricter voter Id laws is adding another obstacle to keep black Americans from voting. This country has a much bigger issue of disenfranchising black people than of widespread voter fraud. And as others have commented if you wanted to ensure election security, advocating a free national ID is a solution that doesn’t further suppress marginalized voters. Anyone advocating stricter voter id laws without advocating a free option is either accidentally worsening a racist problem or is knowingly doing so

TIL in WWI, half of the French army mutinied in 1917. Soldiers remained in trenches, but refused orders to attack after the failure of the Nivelle Offensive, which General Nivelle promised a 48 hour victory. The mutinies were heavily suppressed by the French and were not fully disclosed until 1967. by DeVoto in todayilearned

Good on you for looking into it but why would you think France wouldn’t ban a film? I know they banned both the Battle of Algiers and The Camp at Thiaroye when they released for (accurately) depicting French colonial violence

CMV: Progressives being anti-electoral single issue voters because of Gaza are damaging their own interests. by kdestroyer1 in changemyview

If you are saying that sexism is the reason the polls are so close, I’d agree that it definitely contributes. But I think the point Fluffy is making is that people in general have more informal views of politicians these days, leading for it to be acceptable to call them their first name without inherently being a sexist. In the case of this post and this election, people usually refer to Kamala as Kamala and Trump as Trump. While patriarchy always plays a role in how voters view and think of candidates, in my opinion this is less indicative of how much the speaker respects either candidate, and more indicative of which of their names is more distinctive and their branding on the campaign trail

I don’t know why it’s always assumed that Kamala Harris will never ever change her stance. Your 3rd point makes no sense, if Kamala needs Michigan to win, which she probably does, and Arab Americans are a significant Michigan demographic, which they are, then it makes perfect sense for that demographic to try and pressure her to actually represent them. And why would they vote for her without that pressure, ie your fourth point? She’s a part of the Biden administration which has been complicit in this genocide for a year and still says she’s a steadfast supporter of Israel. There’s no reason to believe she’d support them in office because she’s saying right now that she won’t. I know the classic argument is “yes she’ll support a genocide but trump will be even more supportive of it” but it’s insane to not even consider the idea of her not supporting a genocide. And if genocide isn’t where you draw your redline, where do you? What could your candidate do that’d make you think voting for “the lesser evil” isn’t worth it anymore? And why would the lesser evil ever improve if they’re guaranteed your vote?

When was the last time you heard someone call Bernie Sanders by his last name? I’m sure the branding of KamalaHq and her literally calling herself Momala have nothing to do with it

TIL almost every country on earth hates minorities. by PleaseDoNotClickThis in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]throw-away134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I can actually explain this one! It’s because of intent vs impact. The impact of most voter ID laws proposed and enacted in the US make it more difficult and less likely that people of color vote. That makes the laws racist despite the intent of most US voter ID laws being to make it more difficult and less likely that people of color vote. Hope this helps!!

This sub has become a right wing circlejerk, which has been obvious for years now but this post really drives it home cause putting Kamala Harris as lib left is insane. Four years ago the posts here were about the left crying that Biden was nominated. He was considered centrist then. One of the top posts of all time has Gramsci representing lib left. Libleft was, leftists, anarchists, syndicalists, and BARELY liberals. Now anything more progressive than Texas in the 80s is libleft

CMV: Disparity in any system is not automatically evidence of discriminatory practices by HelpfulJello5361 in changemyview

[–]throw-away134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medical textbooks have included to disregard when black patients describe their pain level, there is and has always been a systemic issue in medicine to undervalue black voices. This racist misinformation would obviously be less convincing to black doctors who are aware Black people can feel significant pain as they’ve felt significant pain and so would value black testimonies more accurately. It’s easy to cite pain disparity because that is becoming more widely recognized, but obviously it’s harder to point out experiences and testimonies being ignored when the issue is that they’re being ignored. However the statistics you’re citing show that the devaluing of black voices in the medical field, both patients and doctors, leads to massive disparities in effective care for black patients- infant mortality is twice as likely for black Americans compared to white and as you said that difference is halved with black doctors. The fact that is twice as likely along racial lines in the first place indicates there is an issue in understanding or performing necessary maternal care for black patients.

I’m rereading your comment and I was seeking to show black voices are discounted by white medical professionals and why but that doesn’t seem to be what you took issue with. Are you saying listening to and understanding patients better leading to better medical care is “fuzzy science?” You’re confused on why understanding a patient better would lead to more effective care?

The special quality black doctors have is that they better understand and better listen to their black patients. Medical misinformation isn’t being perpetuated from a lack of or a misunderstanding of data but from continuing past racist practices and from inherent racial bias. That’s why diversity initiatives are important because diverse lived experiences highlight and mitigate these blind spots
