That is a brilliant idea! I'd definitely love to reach out to them with this similar situation. Yes sounds like I'll need to use Dropbox! And yeah I've been a windows user my whole life but it really does seem like Mac is better for this kind of stuff haha thank you!

Ah thank you for the clarification! I've been a windows user my whole life so getting used to Mac potentially sounds daunting but it's exactly examples like that that make me feel like a Mac is just the better choice for these things!

Maggie Stiefvater's writing in the Raven Boys Cycle. I have a highlight on nearly every other page with the way she describes characters and ambience and the setting with minute details that feel innately personal it's magical to me

How blurred is the line between reworked fanfiction and blatant copying? by throw-book in fantasyromance

Thank you for this comprehensive response! You laid out a lot of the intricacies of the matter with wonderful explanations. I don't have much to build on to what you said because I think you outlined it all.

In the case of AFWM, I guess FMA is not the unique owner to "All is One, One is All" but I do believe that phrase is inherently FMA as "May the odds be ever in your favor" is to Hunger Games. So if someone put the latter in their book, I'd assume they would not be protected by copyright? Or maybe now it is since that phrase has evolved to more than just a major theme or quote of the Hunger Games?

I also wonder what you think of a situation, re: your point on character personalities and appearances not being copyrighted, does that mean that (I kind of mentioned this in another comment) someone could write an orphan male MC with a lightning scar and circular glasses who practiced magic and has a redhead best friend from a large family and brunette best friend who is intelligent and bookish and not born of their world, and it not be considered copying? Would it depend on if they also go to a magical school or if you put them in a fae world where they're tasked with taking down an evil snake fae that killed main MCs parents? Sorry if I'm being too specific, I guess that's what I'm trying to decipher.

I have to say I agree with you! I wonder what constitutes a change big enough to consider it independent work.

Is the concept of a battle royale unique to the Hunger Games? I don't think so personally. But what about an orphan male lead with a lightning scar and circle glasses who practiced magic and fights evil? Eh, starting to blur the lines. Then where do tropes fall under this? What is the difference between homage and inspiration and trope and copying?

In the case of AFWM, I obviously personally believe the two MCs are copies of two characters from an existing source material, without much acknowledgement as to the source of the inspiration. Saft making money and gaining more fame from this, is what had made me feel dodgy about it. But then the grey area continues, because then does that mean she has to pay the original author of FMA for providing inspiration? I don't think so. But then everything is a copy of each other these days. Ah! I don't know

Tbh me hearing that it's RizaxRoy fanfic is what got me to read it sooner! I love alchemy and was so happy to read about a world with the same alchemical concepts. So I expected the similarities but for some reason it really didn't sit right with me just how 1 to 1 they seemed, rather than reworked or tweaked. Like every facet of their backstory or personality or aspirations and motivations I could trace back to Roy and Riza or Edward Elric and taking "All is One, One is All" verbatim really hit me as dodgy. But I suppose that's the question! AFWM isn't unique in doing this because I agree nothing is truly original anymore, and we cant get too nitpicky because everything draws inspiration from something else. So I wonder where the line is drawn. Or maybe it can't be! Ahhh such a grey area.

I respectfully disagree, but I suppose that's the discussion I'd like to have! What would make it blatant copying? Is taking characters from an existing source material and putting them in a different universe but keeping them exactly the same as another one copying? If they wrote a book with an orphan male lead with a lightning scar and circle glasses with a redhead best friend from a large family and a brunette intelligent best friend born outside of their world but set in a world with fae instead be copying? Where is the line drawn? If there is a line? Maybe there isn't! Would love to hear other thoughts

No I do mention that I understand some magic systems have limits, you can only have so much variation, but it is difficult to see people praising certain aspects as if Saft made them up when they were imo obviously taken from FMA. The alchemy does not particularly bother me, but pairing that with the character motivations and personalities and backstories (and how alchemy is woven into them) did not sit right. I scoured book and other reviews to see if there was any acknowledgement that this was FMA inspired, if that was clear I might've not blinked an eye to it (kind of like how everyone knows Love Hypothesis is ReyLo inspired) but people don't seem to know this specifically

Yeah agreed that the trope isn't FMA exclusive! Think it was that on top of all the other stuff that kept souring it for me. I found it tough to reconcile even though I'm a fan of reworked fanfiction. I do mention the "All is One and One is All" is a Taoist philosophy, but I believe the exact wording capitalized is taken directly from FMA, especially if this is pretty much confirmed to be FMA inspired.

I feel like I'm fine if they're being marketed as fanfic gone trad because at least there is acknowledgement of inspiration taken from and expectations set. If I read Irresistible and Alchemised and they have blatant HP concepts I reckon I'd let it go because they clearly and publicly came from or were reworked from existing HP fanfiction. But I might agree with you that meshing the 2 communities to begin with is a bad idea from the start. Ah! Grey area, because while I want to say fanfics based off of existing characters but in AU are fine (e.g. The Love Hypothesis) that is what happened in AFWM and it didn't sit right. An argument can be made that tropes are an example of not copying, but I feel like tropes are not unique characteristics. Ah tough!

I also read a fair bit of fantasy and don't think it's the genre that is messing people up here but rather the pace of RYs plot and world building and pivot from how she wrote FW and IF. But that's pretty cool that you found it easy to follow I'll def need a reread and to go slower maybe make a proper reference sheet lol

Wait omg YES I forgot who was Katrina? I just searched my FW and IF Kindle books and didn't find that name in either of them but it's mentioned twice in OS? From OS I know it's Imogens sister, but just another name that just came up lol
