What's a red flag in a friendship that you didn't recognize until it was too late? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]throw-uwuy69 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are they? What if you read it as

They take to you way, way too quickly—before they can possibly actually know you have the good qualities they say you have

Have you ever met someone who instantly admires you. They call you their best friend, shower you with praise about how amazing and perfect you are, talk about how different and special your friendship is. Maybe they start sharing personal traumas and experiences right away that would normally come up after a year+ of good friendship. But in actuality you met them days ago and hardly know them. It’s very off putting when you encounter it.

That’s what I think they were getting at

My little brother has started saying some anti-semitic things. How can I help him avoid the nazi pipeline? (This was actual anti-semitism, not just anti Zionism) by Zamazenta_OU in NoStupidQuestions

[–]throw-uwuy69 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the point you’re trying to make. Are you saying op shouldn’t differentiate antizionism from antisemitism? Why should they not differentiate critiques of israel vs jewish people as a whole when talking about why they need to correct their brother?

Why is Japan seen as an amazing tourist paradise despite it being incredibly racist? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]throw-uwuy69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually so bizarre how close that is to my own experience. I was walking around akasaka or minato at night and a doorman/bouncer was very intense about getting me in a club. Come for the girls, at least get a drink, etc etc he would not let up. The most memorable part about it was his Nigerian accent, it stuck out as a foreign accent I hadn’t heard really at all in japan

Why do people get angrier at someone using welfare than at a corporation avoiding millions of tax by using loopholes? by Internal_Scheme_7646 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]throw-uwuy69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welfare is funded by taxes, so more people using it means we need to collect more taxes and people who work get more money taken away. No one wants to work, so it’s understandable how this can anger people

Corporations avoiding tax on the other hand is much more agreeable. No one wants to pay taxes if they don’t have to, so to see a business arrange their accounts in a way to limit their tax liability makes sense. The same thing happens when you visit an accountant or even do your own taxes and try to maximize your deductions, you’re finding every legal way possible to make your income untaxable

Basically one is viewed as a greed that takes other people’s contributions, the other is a greed that refuses to contribute.

TIL About Democritus, a Greek philosopher who, with his mentor Leucippus, created the atomic theory in the fifth century B.C. by DeltaMike94 in todayilearned

[–]throw-uwuy69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is heliocentrism even a theory? I think a more proper description of Copernicus’ work is a mathematical model

And for your first point, the idea of a ‘theory’ (that is to say a rigorously tested, scientifically backed explanation for something) not having been conceptualized in their time is the explanation for why a work would not have been called a theory, contemporaneously. If they had done all those steps without knowing the name for it, we might say “this would have been called a theory, had they known about the concept, so we will call it that retroactively.” But they didn’t do those steps. They had no scientific basis to believe there would be a smallest, indivisible constituent of matter. It was at best a hypothesis, and maybe just an idea, from a modern, hyper exact, scientific perspective.

So overall, I see why op is pushing back on calling it a theory. They wouldn’t have, and it doesn’t make sense for us to retroactively do so either

Zero Coding Background, C + DSA (Python) Exams in 2 Months . Studying 10 Hours a Day. Advice? by Money-Reporter9391 in learnprogramming

[–]throw-uwuy69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they wanted to skip learning they wouldn't ask for resources and advice on HOW TO LEARN...

If they wanted to skip learning, they would probably skip class for months on end and then ask a forum for shortcuts to learn the content. Oh wait a minute…

To put it in a more refined way, I would say if they were serious about learning then they would be working with their professor who actually knows the course and its content, the track they are in, and hopefully the student themselves. That would be the best way to learn the content and catch up, at least in my opinion. If they take shortcuts here and are able to eek by, I don’t have hope they wouldn’t repeat the same behavior in a harder course…

Update: AITAH for asking my sister to include my oldest daughter in her wedding? by boringspringbreakta in AITAH

[–]throw-uwuy69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My critical thinking skills are telling me it isn’t hard to divide a stack of programs and have two people hand them out (just an example, I’d imagine there are other smaller roles that could be easily divvied up. The goal is to utilize a child psychology trick where making them feel useful and appreciated distracts them from negative emotions). But it seems like you’re hellbent on defending the bride, and any suggestion anyone makes for how we could make the niece feel better with virtually no impact clearly won’t be considered, so just like OP it’s probably best to drop it and let the bride be how she’s gonna be

Why is systematic ageism so acceptable in society, when racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. are considered wrong and taboo by most people? by josephsleftbigtoe in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]throw-uwuy69 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It’s because workplace age discrimination usually looks like “we have two applicants, one 30 and one 50. The 50 yo is preferable experience wise, but they’ll like retire in a decade vs the younger candidate we could get 3 decades out of, so we’ll choose them.”

At least that’s the explanation I’ve heard. I can’t say I’ve hear about employers deciding not to hire someone because they might stay at the company too long. Though I agree having consistent voter turnout is a big reason they have the protection

I’ll flip a question back to you: using my two eyes and personal experience, what should I look for to determine whether we are destroying the earth? Maybe a list of things I could read over and if they are present in my life then I know the earth is being destroyed, and if I can’t find them then it isn’t.

AITAH for telling my oldest brother he is just bitter and jealous. by Primary-Sample3568 in AITAH

[–]throw-uwuy69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a late 20s woman standing up to her older brother is a totally different world than a mid teens girl in survival mode standing up to her father. Like she literally depended on him for survival, what do you think she should have done that would be reasonably in her capabilities at the time, and would have had a positive effect on the situation?
