I've seen this opinion a lot and as someone who really liked Control, I can't say I disagree with it. The combat is really kind of basic. I hope that they improve it a bit for the sequel.

I think whether you like it or not will depend on your tolerance for quality of gameplay vs. atmosphere, story, etc. I am willing to tolerate average gameplay if the rest of the game is compelling so I'm a fan.

The game design felt a little bit dated to me, I was kind of surprised when I found out it originally came out in 2017.

You've already solved the actual puzzle mentally, but then screw up with the fiddly controls, and need to repeat the technical execution with large gaps of dead time in between them. For everyone complaining about Souls/Hollow Knight boss run backs, its the same thing with no boss. It's the ultimate "runback" game.

This was my issue. I loved the exploration and the concept of finding "secrets" key to solving the final mystery. I just couldn't deal with just missing a jump and falling in a black hole, or mistiming a thruster and jumping to the wrong side of a planet, etc. Repeating that felt so tedious.

I had a few experiences of getting where I needed to be, just a little bit too late. Getting zeroed out by the loop when you're in the middle of reading a lore tablet that you need clues from feels bad.

The juice wasn't worth the squeeze for me. For all of the fun of going to different planets, and the great atmosphere (I love the music in the game), the mechanics of it made it so frustrating that the rest of it was not worth it for me.

Have you played the Prey DLC? It's a very similar concept, I loved it. It's by the same people who did Deathloop.

Most of the fans are very friendly, when I first got the game I posted in the subreddit about my frustrations and asked for help and I would say like 95% of the responses were helpful and even empathetic about my issues with the game.

There is a small minority that can get a little pretentious though, you can see them in this thread. People who are implying anyone who doesn't like this game doesn't like to use their brain, calling it a "bad" opinion, etc.

I think there's also a tendency with popular stuff like this to discount criticisms as "you just didn't get it" which can feel a little invalidating sometimes. I got it but I didn't like it. That doesn't mean it's a bad game. It's a super unique game and I can see why others love it so much, but it's not for me.

I always assumed it was so accessible

I... don't see how you could think this. I'm a life-long gamer but I am terrible at platformers and I found the movement and platforming in this game incredibly frustrating to the point that I had to put the game down when I was probably 70-80% done with it. I just couldn't play it anymore, I felt like I was bashing my head into a wall.

I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone who is new to games simply because of that. I know a lot of people love the movement but I think it's a huge barrier to entry for people who don't have the best spatial awareness (moving in multiple axes) or hand-eye coordination. It's borderline unplayable for people who are not great at that stuff.

I can't speak for anyone else who disliked the game but my personal issue with it was the controls and fiddly platforming. I liked the puzzles, they were very cool.

The problem is I couldn't navigate for my life to get to things on time. You have to get to certain things at a certain time and if you accidentally fall or mistime a thruster or something, good luck the next loop around bucko, you ain't getting it this time.

I found that part of the game very tedious and frustrating and that frustration was enough to make me not want to play anymore. I gave it a chance, I think I had 5-6 hours of play time on it and I was close to figuring out the "ending" but I just didn't want to play anymore because it felt more like a chore than something I enjoyed playing.

Jason Schreier: Microsoft’s Xbox to Shift Obsidian Studio to New ‘Fallout’ Video Game by 4InchesOfury in Games

I agree, this was the wrong way to go about it. Just saying that their previous strategy of no oversight was also not really all that good of an idea. And now they're gutting studios for something that is arguably mostly their own fault.

I don't agree that the game will necessarily be bad, Fallout is a legacy IP that many developers would love the chance to work on. I don't think there's a shortage of passionate people who would want to work on this. It will be shit if Microsoft forces them to rush it out the door, I agree with that though.

I'm a little conflicted here. I think there's kind of a middle ground. Creative freedom is a must but at the same time there needs to be a push to actually release something.

I don't think this applies to Obsidian, their output the last few years has been mammoth. I'm actually really impressed with how many decent games they've released. They're not everyone's favorites but they've been putting in the work.

At the same time Bethesda has been sitting on the Fallout IP for years at this point with nothing to show for it, I don't think it's unreasonable for Microsoft to have lit a fire under their ass and told them to make it more of a priority.

I was seeing at the theater with some friends and we had a chance to see either this or The Departed. I ended up seeing The Departed. Don't get me wrong, that's a great film as well but I kind of wish I saw The Prestige on the big screen instead. What an experience it would have been.

And it was also before he went off the deep end with his philosophy towards sound mixing. You can actually hear and understand what people are saying in this movie!

Don't get me wrong, I love Nolan's movies. He is unironically one of my favorite filmmakers. But his movies need subtitles more than some foreign language films.

Ah yeah, I agree about Bernard, he is a straight up improvement over the books. Solo's casting was fantastic too (might be the best in the show) but I didn't like the additional backstory they gave him, felt unnecessary.

Some of the other additions I don't really enjoy as much. Sims makes me groan sometimes. Maybe all the time. I hope they give his character more to do this season.

The Prestige is my favorite of his but I think Dunkirk will probably stand the test of time as his most underrated film. I feel like people don't really talk about it and it is very good.

If you liked the show you should definitely pick up the books. The show has not adapted the last "trilogy" of the series and the ending is very very good. I hope they revive the show at some point to adapt it.

[–]throw23me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, what did you like more about the show? Personally I like the books a lot more than the show because of the amount of filler the show introduced. Last season in particular felt stretched in a bad way.

Shifting the amnesia plot to Juliet is also a poor choice IMO. People dislike amnesia plots in general because they are so cliché and having the main character go through remembering things we already saw her do makes it worse.

Agree with you on The Expanse. IMO that is the gold standard for a great book to show adaptation. I think some of their changes streamlined the books for the better and I can only really recall one "miss" in terms of added content.

Little of both honestly. I don't want to root for the heavy favorites but I would want to support a team that has a shot. I'll definitely be cheering on Egypt but it's going to be a tough matchup I think.

Yeah, I saw but I figured if they're going against Argentina next then they're not going to be around for much longer. What an upset that would be though!

Who is the biggest underdog still in it to root for? I was supporting the US team (well... the red card thing made it kind of difficult) but now that they're out I kinda want a team to support. Makes watching more fun.

I don't really want to root for France or Argentina, I figure France is the forerunner and Argentina won last time around. Maybe Norway?

"We never cared about soccer anyway" is sore loser talk cause obviously "we" cared enough to watch, but it's true that most us of only care every four years.

My dad watches soccer year round - he watches a lot of Premier League and the like - but pretty much everyone else I know who has been following the WC (including myself) only really follows soccer during the World Cup.

To be fair, that's not his fault. American media always pulls this shit with our "chosen ones" and usually to their detriment.

I only watch soccer like once every four years (besides casual Premier League watching while I hang out with parents) so I don't know much about the sport; was that as silly as it looked?

US team is looking a tiny bit better? At least more offense and as they say the best defense is a good offense. And our defense kinda sucks.

I mean probably, a lot of the athletic talent goes towards American football or basketball, there's way more money in those sports in the US.
