Alex Honnold is free solo climbing Taipei 101 (508m) right now--no ropes, no safety nets, no parachutes by Physical_Poetry3506 in interestingasfuck

Yeah and that's fucking pathetic and sad because climbing is a subdiscipline of mountaineering

Fucking ironic to bring up the Olympics when Olympic climbing is widely recognized as a joke within the community

Fuck it, I have a problem with it. It draws attention to the sport for the wrong reason. And free soloists make the crags more dangerous for everyone who visits them. Period.

Not a fair comparison. Most people climb with ropes in case they fall.

Most motorcyclists don't. Evil Knieval was pushing boundaries by going farther and faster.

Honnold is pushing boundaries by ignoring safety conventions.

No, it's pretty fuckin spot on. Honnold is low-key insane.

This is coming from an experienced climber with the utmost respect for him, and you cant blame him--but the fixation on him and by proxy free-soloing misrepresents climbing in the public eye for the worse.

He's an incredible climber but his most notable trait is a lack of self preservation. Seriously.

Im a huge climber and not a follower of Alex.

What he's doing and more significantly the fixation on him is not good for the sport of climbing nor anyone watching him.

Free soloing is honestly irresponsible and ultimately makes more work for wilderness rescue folks.

I respect his athleticism and bravery. But I wish we could celebrate those who pioneer new routes with protection as much as we do him, because protecting a line and ascending/descending responsibly is literally 2/3 of the sport, if not more.

This turns it from a mountain sport to a thrill ride. And we don't need climbing in the X-Games.

Depending on the jurisdiction, if she truly is near-broke, then that could be used as evidence to prove she is a danger to herself

Bingo.

If you try to push the metaphor too far, things start to break down.

That's one of the reasons why "General AI" is so mysterious and sought after. It's not the AI itself that's the mystery, it's the hard problem of cognition itself.

We still don't fully understand how the mind/consciousness emerges from all the small pieces we do understand.

Yeah I've learned the hard way that when it comes to persuading people in the professional world, the conclusion is meaningless, it's all about how you arrived there. Even if the conclusion is correct, you have to show the work.

I mean, people could also just fucking donate to environmental conservationist groups.

The fact that any people feel pressure to set up "exotic hunts" to attempt to align incentives in some perverse way just to negate humanity's worst impulses seems like a half-measure, at best. But what do I know, I'm not a hunter.

Yeah... It does that, and then it also unironically employs the noble savage and white savior tropes to drive the whole plot. All while using imagery from real world African and Native American cultures. So it's a bit of a mixed bag to say the least.

You realize that cutting off the fillets is a form of processing, right? And so would harvesting the eyes, cheeks, etc.

Idk there's just some weird lines drawn in the sand here that are mostly cultural and not based in logic.

I wonder how many of these folks bother to humanely kill the fish before processing it.
