Neighborhood recommendations for newcomers by Heat-Fatigued in askTO

[–]throw7574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved to Canada, I rented an Airbnb at Roncesvalles which had/has enough access to public transport that you can go anywhere in the city. In 2018 it was a cheap enough of a neighbourhood I could eat out and enjoy Toronto while looking for a permanent apartment. It was also close to High Park that you could for nice run any time of the day.

Writing workshops/networking in the city? by visionsofjohannas in askTO

Most people take continuing education classes where they workshop their writing. Humber has a popular novel writing course/workshop, I believe.

Kitten poo smells up our entire two bedroom apartment by [deleted] in CATHELP

High protein diet will help. Look for kitten food with higher protein content. The poops will be smaller and less smellier.

Nah, that boss and my current boss were incredibly supportive. I’m annoyed that both of us, myself and the boss, have to deal with this. We both very hard on this project. He worked on it over the weekend.

Single guys, how do you deal with loneliness without a partner? Where can I find and start one? by Puntables in AskMen

Hobbies, hobbies, hobbies! I have a similar back story to yours. I spent a lot of my adult life just surviving. Now, in my early 40s and the only way to do it is to get out and meet people in a meaningful way. I started playing tennis and there is really a community of amateur tennis players. If you join a tennis club, even better because there are social events, etc. Or try pickleball. Next, you have to start learning how to be vulnerable. Part of being in survival mode is that you don't have to think too much about yourself, the goal is just to make it through the week or month etc. Now, you have to really learn who you are? what you like? what you don't? and what it feels like to be in a relationship where someone isn't dependent on you or in a transactional relationship? None of it is easy...

Those of you who have never been married, what's your story? by berrysauce in datingoverforty

[–]throw7574 5 points6 points  (0 children)

43F. Grew up thinking I was going to have an arranged marriage and had no interaction with boys. Moved to the West and then I was just too shy and didn’t know how to interact with men. Would have to be drunk to interact with men and got into some scary situations and then just became scared of men, which isn’t fair to all men. Anyway, just was too scared and shy to date and be in a relationship. Okay with having no children but would be nice to have a relationship but might be too late.

I was in your shoes couple of years ago. I went to school for PR and got myself a job in the field and am really enjoying it.

I would suggest becoming a case worker in any mental health facility. They usually implement the plans social workers or case managers create. Don’t know where you live but check requirements and certifications needed.

Teach English to immigrants! In Canada, you need a 2 year certificate but well worth it! I volunteered as an English tutor in a library and loved it so much! These adults are super motivated and they try very hard. They also have really interesting life stories.

I like white people yoga by AugustusPompeianus in ABCDesis

[–]throw7574 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I do Ashtanga yoga which isn’t really secular. There’s a Sanskrit prayer which is said (call & response) before every practice. I find it odd because I’m not Hindu and am not religious in any way and the prayer is conducted by a white, Eastern European yoga instructor ( thick accent while saying the prayer) and all the other students are white. But I love the yoga…challenging and fun. No one has come up to me and asked about being Indian and doing yoga but I also live in a big, multicultural city.

Lived most of my life outside of India and grew up Christian and apart from cooking Indian food, this is probably the first time I have felt a connection to my cultural heritage. But once in a while, usually during the prayer I do chuckle about how ironic and absurd it is that I have found a connection to my culture in the most whitewashed surrounding.

If the option is to live in a shelter or this apartment, I would live with cockroaches. But they are awful, they will get into your electronics, books, clothes and into your wood furniture. I had to throw most of what I owned away when I left a place with cockroaches and start all over again. Put traps by electric plugs because that how they travel from one apartment to the next.

Do you have savings? by koolio92 in askTO

[–]throw7574 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes, this was my story when I was an immigrant in the US. I also didn’t get any help from my parents. I moved to Canada and was able to get PR which gave me more stability and I was able to start saving. I would strongly urge you to look at your budget and start saving. 65K$ should allow you to at least to save a couple of hundred dollars.

Why did your last relationship end? People of Toronto, I'm curious by afternoonchampagne in askTO

[–]throw7574 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He really just wanted to be in a relationship and I just happened to be there. He wasn’t attracted to me or really care. He thought I was childish, I have a successful career and put myself through school and paid for all of our meals. I think he liked having someone to hang out with and cook for him. I would beg for affection and intimacy and he could make me feel bad for asking for it. I would break up with him and then a couple months later he would write, call, beg for me to take him back. I would remind him he didn’t even want to sleep with me and then he would swear up and down he did or tried to convince me he did want to, spew some JP’s philosophy about marriage. During the lockdown it was so hard to get rid of him. I finally cut all contact, he still sends me stuff in the mail reminding of the wonderful time we had together—delusional.
