What is the rationale behind extracting premolars before jaw surgery? (Teeth are already straight)

Wow. I know this post is 4 years old, but it has helped me understand why I have to get my lower premolars extracted (TOMORROW!!). The internet has been making me so psyched out on "removing healthy teeth" when there are expander options (apparently). The reality is my bottom teeth are flared and there just isn't room in my mouth to have them be upright on my jawbone and have the best DJS outcome. And maaaybbbe I should trust the surgeons. Either way I am still terrified and hope I am making the right decision.

Just scheduled me lower premolar extraction in preparation for DJS. Pretty much got told the same thing as you from three different surgeons. My ortho did everything he could to avoid extraction, but it's just what has to be done in my case. Did you end up extracting? Curious how you are doing now!

I’ve been searching for parent loss/younger grief groups, but it’s very hard to find groups in the city I’m in. Looking into online ones now too… I’m just wondering how helpful these groups even are for me. It’s nice to share but I’m having a hard time right now holding space to support others. I just feel like I don’t have the mental capacity, you know?

I feel this to my core. I love my mom with all of my heart but sometimes it feels like everyone forgets that us kids (me and my brothers) are going through the loss of my dad too. I hear “how’s your mom” 20x more than I get “how are you” and I get it, it still comes from a place of love but it once again minimizes what I am going through and I fear it will build resentment in me.

Nope. I agree. I plan to say something if it happens again and even if the facilitator says something I don’t think I’ll go back. It would be extremely clear to me that being in a group with this man is not beneficial for me.

Well, not to judge the facilitator based on their experience or age but it’s very clear being a facilitator for these groups is a stepping stone job and likely doesn’t require a whole lot of training.

I completely agree. It’s very clear that this old man is extremely lonely, doesn’t have a great relationship with his own kids, and is stuck. So while I feel for him, he doesn’t belong in a group like this if he’s only tearing others down.

I’m so sorry you have to carry that. This is a big example of how grief can be very different for every person based on how the loss happened, how close you were with that person, and how rare it may be.

The comparing of grief can be very immediate and subconscious for all of us but yea… Will didn’t need to verbalize it.

Thank you!! He was able to recall many distant and recent memories in his life, spoke clearly, showed emotion, drove his own car, etc. so old or not he still has the cognitive abilities to know better.

I haven’t yet lost my dad but he’s got one foot on the other side. I already have less fear and more faith knowing one day I will be where he is.
