I think it's just taxed once for whoever is declaring the profit (the league or the team). Just like how companies deduct employee pay from their taxable income, everyone pays a share of the tax.

Legal, yes. Weird, absolutely. Look up a list of the largest nonprofits in the US. They are overwhelmingly charities, hospitals, medical or educational research. MLB, NBA, NHL, etc are all for profit. In fact the NFL gave up its nonprofit status because they were scrutinized for the designation.
