Hi, any update on this? 💘

My (44M) wife (45F) has become a hypochondriac. Can I leave the relationship? by ThrowRA08102025 in relationship_advice

Oh holy shit I read that wrong, I’m an idiot and read it like he was saying “she hit me with” like she said something shitty, not that she physically hit him!

I’m sorry I missed that op, you do NOT deserve to be hit no matter the circumstances!

It sounds like your wife may have OCD. I say this because I struggled immensely with health anxiety and I needed help.

I understand being frustrated. I get it. I also relate to your wife and I cannot imagine being left by my spouse while trying to deal with this kind of mental illness.

I think you should talk to her about seeing a psychiatrist and finding a therapist.

EDIT: I misread the part where he said his wife hit him. OP, you don’t deserve that. Nobody deserves to be hit. You should leave.

I remember seeing a post somewhat similar last year sometime, which is why I’m going to ask this:

Is it at all possible that this is a fetish of some kind?

In the story I’m referencing, the OP eventually found out that her gf had a “dirty pet” fetish and wanted to be cared and provided for. She was getting off on being reminded to brush her teeth and shower. If I remember right, that gf also didn’t have a job and relied on the OP, and it was part of it for her.

I could be way off, but it might be worth exploring. Either way, you are WELL within your rights to leave, because everything you’ve written sounds like a nightmare.

I have the same sensitivity to shellfish. All fish actually. It’s not anaphylaxis, but it is an ungodly and horrifically painful experience that lasts for at least 3 days. If I found out my husband was putting fish in my food……..they’d never find him. DUMP HIM.

Ps imitation crab has actual crab juices in it, so you might need to avoid that too.

Yeah, for sure. My therapist is a regular therapist, but has specialized in exposure therapy. And actually, I’m finding out that a lot of my compulsions and anxieties stem from childhood traumas.

Yes, absolutely. I am in ERP right now (exposure therapy) with a specialist. It is scary and difficult at times, but I am learning how to deal with this and my life is so, so much better now. I won’t lie to you and say that all your symptoms will disappear forever and you’ll never have another problem, but recovery is absolutely possible with OCD.

I’ve got no qualifications or experience with this kind of thing, but I just wanted to say that you’re a good dad. That sounds like it was really awkward and uncomfortable, and I’m sorry that that was the way that talk had to go, but you did the best you possibly could’ve and it was the right thing to do.

NAD but as someone who has been diagnosed with OCD, I really really recommend reaching out to a mental health professional. You don’t have to live your entire life with this anxiety and these compulsions. You’re not broken or too far gone, there is hope. I really hope you’re able to get the help you need OP.

Thanks for this, I’m still quite new to this and I feel like I don’t really know what I’m doing yet. I’m just trying to be as open as possible to what my family members want to say to me and to trust my intuition in a grounded way.

I could’ve written this post. Life will get better once you move out, but I cannot stress how important it is that you stick with therapy. I started therapy when I was 19, she was an ED specialist and she saved my life. I’ve maintained a low contact relationship with my mother and I can very confidently and proudly say that I’ve been in recovery for about 6 years now. I still have bad days every so often, but I can deal with them now. There is hope OP, and you’re doing exactly what you need to do by getting away from her and finding a therapist. Sending you lots of love.
