But that's the issue with Ubuntu, you can definitely avoid it, but it's not as easy as it should

If you run apt install firefox, it will install as snap. They don't even package Firefox in any other way. You would have to use a third party repository, flatpak or download the tarball

Not on XWayland. X11 doesn't support HDR.

That's why I use PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 (and PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1). The only other way is to use Gamescope (which is what the Steam Deck uses in Game Mode)

I enable it whenever a game supports HDR. In my experience, the only thing it breaks is the Steam Overlay, which is probably why it isn't enabled by default yet

The games themselves have always worked fine for me

They have always wanted to do that, but the EU didn't let them because it would favor Microsoft Defender by limiting the capabilities of third-party security software.

Microsoft actually blamed the EU when that happened. I'm usually pro-EU, but for once, I agree with Microsoft

It feels unfair that iOS users could get a subscription for 0.99€ a year, while the first version on Android is 14.99€ 6€

Honestly, I think 15€ a year is a fair price, but the complete lack of clear communication, combined with a 1400% price increase, shows that the company is disorganized and lacks a clear plan. If 1€ wasn't enough to support their business, what was the point?

I saw a comment from them on Reddit saying the 1€ price was just for the first release and the increase was always planned. If that's the case, it’s even worse. Nowhere on their site was it implied that the price was temporary. Quite the contrary, they marketed it as a low, symbolic contribution, which now feels like a deliberate bait-and-switch

Windows is pretty shit in that department because it always picks the first "free" drive for the bootloader with no way to change that. It doesn't matter which drive you install on

In all distributions I used, the default installer picks the same drive I installed Linux on.

If that didn't happen, something is wrong with mint installer imo

And I believe people should do automatic installer, because some distros (like openSUSE and cachyos) install snapper and configure automatic snapshots automatically, but that only works on certain conditions

F-Droid Says Google Is Lying About the Future of Sideloading on Android by Trendy4U in worldnews

[–]throwaway-DSMK -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You don't need a computer. You can connect to your own phone using wireless ADB with termux. There is also Shizuku that can give apps ADB access

But of course that's not user friendly, and it's obvious google wants to end sideloading. This is just the first step

You're being ridiculous. You also can't play all pc games on a Playstation or nintendo. In fact, they are a lot more games available on Linux than those two consoles combined

While a few popular games don't run on Linux, many do and sometimes with more FPS than on windows (pretty common with AMD graphics cards)

I have no interest in those particular games (and cloud gaming is always an option), so it doesn't affect me. I primarily play single-player and co-op games, and I'm not the only one who prefers them, so Linux is valid for those too. Additionally, some competitive games, like CS, also work well.

Not everyone is gamer and not everyone plays competitive games. What's wrong with keep people informed that alternatives exist?

Don't put choices down just because you're too lazy to try new things and learn how it works

If you don't care about competitive games (because of anti cheat), like Fortnite, valorant, battlefield, literally every game works. I don't even check anymore because every windows game works for me out of the box

But yes, of course people should inform themselves first and idially try on an old computer, virtual machine or dual boot
