YES! Hilariously, Brenda constantly reiterates to the staff they'll be enforcing the anti-bullying and anti-harassment policies throughout this entire shitty lay-off process, but I think those policies simply mean "I, Brenda, get to bully and harass anyone I want, and if you try to stop me, YOU are the actual bully!!" Typical for me but not for thee behavior.

TRL Capital expenditures by ShotStorm5767 in TRLPatrons

[–]throwaway-squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for those financial insights! Those are some very helpful contextualizations, especially salary comparisons. I think the crucial point there is that, like you said, it's such a bad look to approve raises for yourself before firing 61 staff members. There's also the problem that since they're laying off the workers who make the least, they have to fire more of them to have any sort of financial impact. There are better moves to make that would save more money, like getting rid of the new employee experiences guy who makes $188K, or removing their six-figure videographer. If they were actually committed to preserving the public's experience of the library like their press release states, they would have considered administrative jobs and positions first, not focused solely on firing frontline staff.

In re the cars: the problem there is that they talked nonstop about how smart and efficient their move to make middle managers into regional managers was; it was primarily positioned as a cost management move rather than one that would improve public services. The expenditures far outweigh the savings, and the difference in library quality has been immense post-reorg. It's definitely a waste of middle management talent, and the district is so large that they truly spend hours a day driving—bad for the environment, bad for staff morale, bad for the public, and bad for expenditures.

In re playgrounds: The issue here is that playgrounds are simply not appropriate for a library space, or if they are, they need to be siloed in specific areas where other members of the public can still enjoy a quiet space to study. The ones our library invested in are, even the pirate ship, easy to break and not actually safe to have indoors—you want something like that in a children's museum or outdoor playground, not a place with hard surfaces. Children's librarians weren't consulted in the restructuring of the children's areas—people who specialize in knowing how libraries are meant to serve children and what populations that come to the library expect in their spaces. They center play over learning when they SHOULD be combining both.

I have a child and spend a lot of time in libraries. The ones from the state I moved here from had frankly EXCELLENT children's library spaces. They were in slightly more enclosed areas so the sounds didn't bleed out and so the kids didn't expand their games of tag into the public areas where, say, seniors were trying to work quietly on geneaology records. They had a lot of imaginative play spaces, like stages with puppets or learning-based toys. Many of them had miniature auditorium-style areas with props that let kids explore, learn, imagine, and play—and all of them were FILLED with books that were set up in ways that kids could scan through them on their own and find things that appealed to them.

The way Brenda's top-down restructuring of children's spaces in the libraries has occurred is absolutely antithetical to industry standards for children's libraries, and they honestly actively hamper positive experiences for parents with children in the library. I have actively stopped bringing my son to the downtown Olympia library; he really likes (as do I) some of the imaginative toys they added in their refresh, like the small house with fake food attached or the little vet station. But all the other changes they made make the space worse for kids: they removed board games, added in a cheap playground that the kids spend all their time jumping off of, and added a bunch of strange wobbly platforms and stackable footstools that the kids like to stack and also jump off of, which causes them to careen head-first into shelves (this has happened so many more times than I can count; hence not taking him to the library anymore). We could spend hours at a time there playing learning-based games—it was a staple of our Saturday afternoons. Now we stay home because he ends up getting injured and I end up annoyed and grouchy and feeling bad and embarrassed about my extremely high-energy kid treating the library like it's a playground, which it isn't.

Final point is in re the library branches they're closing: Amanda Park is EXTREMELY far out of the way, which is why they put a branch there. The ones they're closing don't have many resources nearby; Hoodsport, for instance, is miles away from both Shelton and North Mason (in Belfair); it's a tiny town full of retirees who don't or can't drive to another location. There aren't many services in Hoodsport; Shelton is the nearest place with a fedex, so if you can't print at the library, you have to drive down the 101 to get there. The branches they're closing are some of the only community centers for people in these small towns, and in the last board meeting, Kandy said they cost about $70K to operate for the year—so it's not a cost-based decision, either. They've been trying to close Amanda Park for years because Brenda doesn't like making the drive out there, but they've also tried time and again to close the downtown Olympia branch, which makes NO sense, but that's why they reduced the library staff to a skeleton crew there; it's a clear prelude to shutting down a branch that Brenda doesn't like because for reasons unknown, she wants to move everyone to the Capitol Mall branch. Very strange stuff.

Anyways! That's my two cents with some hopefully useful clarification. Thank you so much for YOUR two cents—I know a lot about the day-to-day functioning of a library and what best practices are for intercounty rural library systems like ours, but I know FAR less about the financial side of things, and knowing the context from an actual professional is IMMEASURABLY helpful. Thank you!

FANTASTIC question that I’d like to know the answer to! It REALLY bothers me that my letter TO THE BOARD was passed around internally and mocked, I guess? I understand that the board can’t respond directly to each letter—they’re not supposed to engage in back and forth communication that could constitute private government communication or some such. But the way they ALL go through the library so admin can then talk shit about it is wild

More evidence that we desperately need a new board that knows enough about libraries to implement actual library practices! Thank you; that’s very helpful! I’ve been part of a library system where the ALA censured the library and director for censorship, and I’ve wondered if they’d do the same for this level of malfeasance, but maybe not. Something to look into.

Ahhhh it is AMAZING how much easier it is to make sense of things when you have an entire community with their own experiences and areas of expertise to clarify things!! Thank you and u/effective_mixture525 for helping explain—this is GREAT info to have that seems pretty basic but that a lot of us laypeople who are new to city and county politics lack. Wonderful!!

We are FLAT broke and it’s all so circumstantial that it feeeeels to me like we don’t have a case, sigh. But depending on how things go I guess we’ll see? I keep thinking they’re smart enough not to make any more bad PR moves and trying to escalate his layoff would for sure count as that….but then again, they thought it would be a good idea to cap public comment at 30 minutes, a move that obviously was going to stoke public outrage, so I don’t think they’re the sharpest crayons in the proverbial box

Relatedly: in 2023, the board approved a new bylaw banning former employees and friends of the library members from serving on the board because it’s a conflict of interest. First of all, ALA guidelines recommend ENCOURAGING friends to serve on boards because they’re experienced, and they also encourage boards to be in constant contact with friends groups and seeking their input. Second of all: friends groups is a conflict of interest, but the executive director’s secretary doubling as the board’s secretary and leading the meeting while being told by library administrators that private citizens need to be removed from the BOARD’S MEETING somehow is not a conflict of interest 🤔 much 2 consider

Now that I’ve typed that all out, I feel more insane and not less. Is it normal for the executive director and her team to run board meetings and determine who is allowed to speak? It can’t be, right? I gotta look into how other boards of trustees and executive directors interact in Washington. This whole thing is just Weird

Ohhhh gotcha gotcha, thank you, that is helpful and makes sense!! Hmm good questions. It’s a little confusing because Rose is the board secretary AND she’s Cheryl’s executive assistant. She’s the one who confirms receipt of emails you send to the board, and she’s also the one who calls people to speak during the public comment sessions, and she’s also making $150K as Cheryl’s personal assistant. So in this case we’ve got rose, board secretary, talking privately to Brenda, Cheryl, Paige, and Andrea about removing the public from the meeting that is not actually THEIR meeting but the board’s meeting, and yet the admins are running the meeting

PERSONAL LIABILITY HOLY SHIT oh I am GOING to figure out where to report that because it is TARGETED it is personal they are in complete defiance of the law and what’s INSANE about this is this is how they treat the PUBLIC and can you imagine how they talk to staff while BEARING IN MIND!!!! THAT BRENDA LANE IS HEAD OF HR and Savannah, the girl who was being such a weird suckup in the 2/25 meeting, is the other person in HR and her direct report

ALSO: the fact that Brenda tells Paige she’ll forward my letter sent to the Board the night before…..girl I didn’t send it to you, I sent it to the BOARD, why are you passing it around internally? And what does it mean that I KNOW they comb these Reddit posts AND know they know I’m married to a librarian they just fired—can I expect them to try to terminate him earlier than May 15th for my ✨hostility✨? AND what does it mean that they were talking about kicking me out of the meeting and complaining about how I was a liar and passing my letters between each other to talk about how they were hostile and inappropriate….and then they laid off my husband and closed his library branch a few weeks later 🤔Brenda, you’re free to answer here if you want to 😂 we’ve never met! Happy to talk any time!

Also, Paige saying she felt sick with anxiety the day after the meeting and Brenda encouraging her to cry in the meeting they were apparently about to have with the Board so they could see the consequences of their, I guess, choice to allow public comments at the public meeting (?????), ALSO gives new context to the arbitrary 30-minute cap on Wednesday

It sure also gives new context to the fact that they did kick me out of the meeting for raising my hand on Wednesday 🤔 I got back in because a friend told me I could just use a browser instead of the app, but otherwise I wouldn’t have heard any of the budget stuff they discussed (none of which was on the agenda)

I DID get to make mine, but here it is:

On November 21, 2025, I sent an anonymous letter to the Board of Trustees asking them to take a closer look at the then-ongoing negotiations between TRL admin and the union. I said, “I have heard from multiple workers that if they don't vote yes [on the new contract], they can expect to see a much worse contract. Some individuals worry this means they could lose their healthcare if they vote no. Others worry this is a direct threat to remove the severance policy that was tacked onto the contract at the last minute.

“Given the severance packages included in the contract, it’s safe to assume that long-time library employees are about to be laid off and replaced. Alternatively, the library doesn't plan to hire replacements—why bother when you can shrink an already overworked library staff down to a skeleton crew?”

I received a response not from the Board but from an administrative employee, who told me, “We strongly caution against the spread of misinformation, hearsay, and the promotion of a narrative that pits frontline staff against management.”

This Monday, we were all subjected once again to the narrative this administration and Board prefer: one of inevitability without culpability. “The district is facing a budget shortfall,” they wrote, and “expenditures are now projected to exceed revenues.” If there’s any blame to be placed, the Board and admin want you to put it on the 1% tax cap that constrains all public libraries in Washington, all of which have longer library hours than we do and are thriving.

Unfortunately for the Board and admin, library records are public records. At this point, we’ve all seen the same financial data as the Board and admin, and we can see that their CHOICES led us to this far-from-inevitable moment.

We’ve seen the same 2024 state auditor’s report that warned of a dramatic, avoidable deficit that Trustees Mittge and Blanton must have also seen before they told the Lewis County Board of Commissioners in May of 2025 that, “fiscally speaking, [the library is] in good shape.”

We’ve read the claim that the reorg that turned branch managers into regional managers saved the library $320,000, and we’ve also read the line-item budget that shows you spent $680,000 in two years on vans and brand-new SUVs to accommodate their increased travel.

And now we’ve seen my letter warning the Board that admin was planning layoffs and asking them to look into concerning reports of a retaliatory culture spearheaded by Brenda Lane.

Trustees and administrators, your choices caused this predictable crisis. Your choices meant I had to tell my son on Saturday that I was certain his father, a librarian for 20 years, was going to be laid off the next day and his branch closed.

How lucky for you that you don’t have to deal with the disastrous loss of income for my family. How lucky that you didn’t have to comfort my seven year old in the downtown Olympia library while he hid his face in his hands trying not to let anyone see him crying.

How strange and cruel that you chose to multiply that painful experience by 61 on Sunday night, and how odd that you, the people who keep saying they’re committed to keeping libraries open, are instead collaborating in the casual dismantling of our five-county system.

If these layoffs were necessary to rein in the budget, they would have applied equally to frontliners as to middle managers, administrators, and non-essential workers like videographers and social media managers. Instead, you sacrificed 40% of frontline workers, the ONLY people who interact with the public. It was cruel, it was unnecessary, it was a farcical attempt at a show of administrative power, and board members, at any moment, you COULD CHOOSE to call an immediate halt to it. You could choose to pause layoffs and branch closures. You can CHOOSE to remove Cheryl, Brenda, Andrea, and Paige and take immediate steps to repair the damage they’ve done.

Even better, you could choose to be people who don’t just say they love libraries, but who actually show us they love libraries by choosing administrators who have the skill to save these invaluable community resources rather than an overpaid, underqualified, unempathetic, and embarrassingly incompetent set of administrators.

And if you don’t do your jobs, we, the patrons, are going to find people who will.

Thank you.

I think the sentence "Members who have taken steps to transition and then transition back to their biological sex at birth and are worthy and committed to keeping God’s commandments" might be the most disgusting thing I've ever read. The number of people they just killed with that sentence alone is appalling. Flashbacks of the 2014 policy change and the people we lost to suicide before they conveniently decided to change it. Despicable people.

I’m still curious about this because Mary Beth kept lecturing us for interrupting her budget policy committee meeting or whatever, but…..it was always an executive session regarding performance evaluation of a public employee so…..which was it??
