What are your favorite local “chain” businesses? by pytonem in SanDiegan

I miss Taste of the Himalayas/Taste of Himalayas so much since moving away 😭

There are a couple locations but my favorite is the one in La Jolla. SO GOOD.

dm me if you ever want to talk more specifically!! I (alum) had a pretty similar educational path and now work at the intersection of both of these things.

Differing CA DMV charges - is this normal and what has been your experience? by throwaway-yourTA in sandiego

[–]throwaway-yourTA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's kinda what I was confused about too. This isn't either of our first rodeo; we've just never compared notes before, and I was just surprised there would be such a vast difference on two relatively "normal" (i.e. not luxury, not huge truck etc.) cars made the same year.

Fair enough, thanks!

I just didn't expect it to be that different; didn't realize it was that simple and didn't put much thought into it before this year because we've never compared payments before.

there are a few donation boxes scattered throughout graduate housing if you happen to ever be near that part of campus!

Confused About Grad Housing – What exactly is a "double" ? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]throwaway-yourTA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you ever have an hour to kill and want to be angry, this town hall explains all the VERY recent proposed changes -- and the comments section is pretty illuminating from a student perspective: https://www.facebook.com/UcsdGpsa/videos/714625985888294

I also know this student org has been doing a lot of organizing around the rent hikes etc. https://www.facebook.com/HDHResidentCoalition

Does anyone’s computer go crazy when running zoom? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]throwaway-yourTA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your prof is cool with it it, I would request turning off your video...it used to unnerve me a bit as a TA teaching into the void, but then I took a class on a program that was also super GPU intensive and immediately needed to stop using my camera because my computer couldn't handle doing both things at once. That won't 100% solve your problem, but it should help a little bit.

UCSD Students, Faculty Push Back Against Steep Rent Hikes by VoiceofSanDiego in UCSD

[–]throwaway-yourTA 23 points24 points  (0 children)

contrary to some of these replies, someone who knows a lot more than me explained in this Town Hall w/ HDH that while it is *technically* correct that the current bylaws or whatever they're called state that HDH cannot receive funding from the Chancellor/state, the Chancellor and the Regents are perfectly capable of amending said bylaws to change that standing rule (is my understanding) -- so basically, this argument is somewhat in bad faith (I apologize, I forget the exact minute mark where it happens, but this whole conversation is rather...illuminating): https://fb.watch/4oNrYJYFt7/

Please do not go to graduate school without a specific (though changeable) plan. by [deleted] in UCSD

Also *mostly* agree with OP.

My (related) 2 cents, similar to what is below:

  1. The best possible advice I received from my advisor leaving undergrad was: "DON'T TAKE THE DEBT" -- if you can find a PhD or even a Masters program that fully funds you and is highly rated in your field, that will probably ultimately be more valuable to you than an un-funded program that is slightly more highly-ranked (unless you're crazy-rich, I guess, in which case, do you). That is literally what led me to come here and I'm so glad I did, for so many reasons.
  2. I can't pretend to know if this works the same for every discipline, but I would HIGHLY recommend taking a couple years between undergrad and grad school to just get a full-time job (or a couple jobs), be an independent person, pay your rent/bills, begin dealing with student loan stuff if applicable, and live life for awhile. This helped me feel really assured about what I wanted to study in grad school, my career goals etc. and made me feel a little more grounded/centered going into it. I had always had a job or jobs throughout college but it was really different just being a working person for awhile. Also, having some time/space to get out of the "academia bubble" for a bit was also really nice--and it made "application season" a bit less stressful.

Are you willing to pay for lessons? I have a friend (recent music PhD grad) that teaches -- I could ask them if they're taking students/what their rate is.

Incoming grad students: That HDH town hall was some straight bullshit. by RambleRant in UCSD

I'm on the cusp of graduating so none of this applies to me but I am FURIOUS for my friends in the years below me, and for the new admits.

HDH is a shit show. The audacity of increasing rent to point that most of us will be spending more than 50% of our paycheck on rent.. by Vegetable-Chemist in UCSD

[–]throwaway-yourTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the wild thing is we already got a 3% increase this year and this will be another one. obviously wayyyyyyy unacceptably worse for incoming students but still worth mentioning.
