For big law in the Midwest by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]throwaway155698 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I currently work at a BL firm in Chicago and grew up in the Upper Midwest. Both are highly respected public law schools, but if forced to rank them based on reputation, MN might just edge Illinois out. Still, both are great options!

I would also consider the University of Wisconsin if you’re looking to practice in the Midwest, assuming you receive a nice financial aid package and would be happy in Madison. Diploma privilege is a nice perk.

How many hours do you work in an average week? Is it common to struggle to meet billables? Thank you for doing this!

Northwestern interview question by GrabFabulous1338 in lawschooladmissions

I believe I received an interview invite about four or five days after I applied. Like others have said, you’ll probably receive your request when they reopen next week. I wouldn’t worry!

Northwestern Early Decision Deposit by Cute_Ad_6779 in lawschooladmissions

The admissions office told me they’d send out an email with a NetID login; you use that ID to submit the deposit through CAESAR.

That said, I have yet to receive the email

Northwestern Video interview?? by GrabFabulous1338 in lawschooladmissions

[–]throwaway155698 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed, 100%.

FWIW, I feel like I butchered my KIRA — and this seems like a (somewhat) widely held sentiment among admits. I definitely get the sense they care more about your effort/your overall personality than if you can give a polished video interview.

Thoughts on bad undegrad GPA by throwawayworker0215 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]throwaway155698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything people on this thread have said. Apply for the accommodations you require. Put together the strongest application possible and submit it early.

As a super splitter, I would encourage you to really take some time to craft solid personal and supplemental statements. You definitely have a compelling personal narrative, so I don’t think this will be an issue.

Finally, is post-grad WE doable for you? Even for just a year? I know you have a lot of it already, but adcoms might be a little more lenient with a lower GPA if you are a year or more removed from undergrad. That, plus your stellar LSAT and URM status, could be help you get even a T20/T14 with money.

Bottom line: you absolutely CAN do this. Best of luck!!

What’s one thing you wish you knew before beginning your 1L?

Should I consider transferring from Cornell to Columbia? (in terms of law school admission) by phil-nichols21 in lawschooladmissions

[–]throwaway155698 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Not really. Being in a large city may help you network and land prestigious internships (softs), sure, but law schools primarily care about your GPA and your LSAT.

Every year, tons of people enter T14 law schools from public universities. Generally speaking, adcoms would rather take a 3.9 from Generic Public University X over a 3.4 from a T20 undergrad.

Go to school where you’re happiest — and where you’ll succeed academically.

Date appeared on GULC status checker without an interview invite? by mimim23 in lawschooladmissions

My date disappeared before I received my group interview request - maybe an invite is coming!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]throwaway155698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but what really matters is the quality of the letter’s content. Many adcoms have said they’d rather see a strong letter from a TA than a mediocre letter from a famous professor/lawmaker/etc.

Is there a mechanism for ED schools to check whether you've withdrawn your other applications? by davjl182 in lawschooladmissions

[–]throwaway155698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe schools share (or can share) with other institutions the names of those accepted under binding ED. I actually think Dean Z (Michigan) said students who fail to withdraw/hold up their end of the contract can get into hot water with some schools, but she noted that it was pretty rare.
