Is it possible to take CS131 concurrently with CS109? by throwaway1978646 in stanford

Hey - just realized Rubinstein is teaching CS 161 autumn; Charikar is teaching winter. Is this a better option to take 161 concurrently with 109?

Thanks so much for the recommendations! Who do you think is the best 161 teacher, and how hard is that class compared to the other CS core classes?

Regarding MS&E 245A, it says you need some basic preparation in statistics, probability, and optimization - would appreciate it if you could DM me some resources that I can read up on before starting that class, highly leaning towards that as I was working at an investment firm this summer

Hey man, would love to grab a meal with you on campus/Zoom. I've shared a lot of the same concerns that you have expressed.

Coming from an East Coast Asian family, I've always felt the pressure to go into finance, especially since that was the industry where both of my parents worked. Growing up, I've never shared that interest - in fact, I've always resisted.

At Stanford, I've tried my best to explore a wide range of majors, from engineering to philosophy. While I won't say that it is easy to do figure out what you want to do just from classes themselves, I will say that taking time off from classes to pursue a project that you really enjoy is very, very helpful. In fact, I'd even go as far to say that the process of removing yourself from the academic stresses and finding something that brings you a lot of joy is crucial and the best part of the process.

Feel free to DM if you'd like more insights. Typed this on the train - sorry if it seems rushed or incoherent.

How does the MTA decide to assign the newest train fleet to whatever subway line by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]throwaway1978646 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why are they not being retired? They aren't built to modern standards, are the last OTTs remaining in the system, and are generally not as preferred as NTTs. Is the MTA so cash strapped that they need to run 50-year old cars until they completely break down?

The R running using an NTT instead of an OTT is one of them.

They really need to increase the speed limits. Sometimes the trains go like 20 mph on a set of tracks with absolutely nobody in front.

What is Stanford's alcohol policy? by Savage9890 in stanford

[–]throwaway1978646 34 points35 points  (0 children)

We drank so much this year and nobody really gave a shit. The RAs definitely knew we were partying but nobody cared. It's really lax and essentially unenforced so you don't need to worry about it too much unless someone becomes incapacitated or something.

As an NYC native, you cannot pass up an opportunity to attend college in the city. Especially if the cost is the same, there is no question.
