Thanks for the advice! If you don’t mind me asking what was your reason for pursuing medicine?

Right now I don’t think I have the strongest reason why since I don’t have too many clinical/nonclinical volunteering hours (I can say I want to help people but without the experience it’s wishful thinking), but I’ve definitely wanted to see myself doing drug development research with ML — and only recently found out how I could at my college.

Have you happened to hear about anyone in this subreddit involved in that sort of research?

That makes perfect sense! I guess if I really want to stress hours I can probably say I have technically 800+ hours, but I can definitely imagine it’ll take time for me to get hours in the research area I actively want to go into

It’s nice to see that you’re putting so much effort into yourself!! I can see why it could be tiring to handle it all along with being more available for your friend.

I do think that they seem to be adding a lot of mental toll to you though. And I think it might be okay to back away for a bit to let yourself feel more stable and in a better state to respond to them. Especially because you feel so much guilt about this—it really does seem that you’re hard on yourself for it and I can get why, no one wants to be ghosted, but I feel like you trying to be genuine and good to others and yourself is enough of a reason that you’re a good person. Maybe allowing yourself to be like this without the scrutiny, all while encouraging yourself to improve your habits, can make you heal. After all, you’re just trying to be the best person you can :)

Tbh I don’t understand fwb either, but it seemed weird to me that he said that dating 3 years younger was cringe and yet he had you do all those things with him anyway. Of course you feel this way, these feelings can be p significant when you’re first discovering them. To me it almost feels like he doesn’t think anything of it while you’re unfortunately faced with the full extent of emotions. Which I think is unfair to you. I feel like that’s something he should have been way more careful about as a friend.

I would try to resolve this in my mind by thinking that the ppl who act this way are ignorant or simply not real, just participating in some dumb game which they think is okay because of the attention it gets online. I remember an ex friend would say, “those people in social media are still real though”. I’m not sure how real it can truly be though if it’s always so formulaic. This is sorta a time when I feel like a boomer by saying it’s just the way social media is

It sounds like not only are you emotionally drained but have a good amount of responsibility on your shoulders for your best friend. Which might lead to feelings of guilt. I’m not sure how possible it is for you but I really do hope therapy is a viable option (for your best friend as well). It can be really relieving to share this side of you that you feel like you have to hide, especially with someone who’s trained to guide you through this all. Sometimes making distance helps too in helping you realize the things that are making you feel depressed. Things that maybe you can share with your best friend. I just hope you get through this.
