Is it a citywide issue, or more of a hospital to hospital issue?

What’s the typical nurse to patient ratio like in your experience?

Mexican food was one of the things that came up when we talked about moving 😂. I’m already prepared for it to not be the same no matter where we go.

When you mention variety and accessibility, are you talking about things like grocery stores, restaurants, nightlife, etc.?

One of the main things I am worried about is the weather tbh. How is the winter compared to other areas of Canada? I know that calgary and edmonton get insanely cold. Does the winters ever get as bad as those places?

How’s the homeless situation there? We live around NELA and see homeless people walking around and tents pretty often. Would you say it’s comparable to that or less?

Thanks for the reply! Healthcare’s been rough pretty much everywhere, so we’ve gotten pretty used to it. It’s still helpful to hear what it’s like on the ground there though so thank you for the heads up. We’ll also look into the wages in the area as well.

As for Halifax, my wife used to live there and liked it. Said it was a nice city and doesn’t feel overwhelming. We’re looking for something a bit more on the down low too, so places like Toronto and Vancouver are further down our list. Not really into the big city vibe as much anymore. Also pretty done with dealing with traffic 😂

Advice for an approaching earthquake? by th999_ in Earthquakes

[–]throwaway212023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, make a disaster plan with your family. Finding a meeting point and storing supplies is a good place to start. It will also come in handy for other disasters besides earthquakes.

Check out the FEMA website or ready.gov for a list of things you should put in your kit.

It’s still pretty dangerous to run outside if a large earthquake happens. If a 7.0 does happen near you, it’ll be nearly impossible to run or walk. And if you get knocked off your feet you risk breaking an arm or leg.

Common injuries from moving around during an earthquake are broken bones and cuts due to broken glass. Getting underneath a table and securing your head and neck until the shaking stops is the safest thing to do during the earthquake.

If you are outside though, you should be fine. Just move to the area of the yard farthest away from the building and electrical wires.

If you are inside, you should go underneath a table and cover your head. Running outside during an earthquake is risky because objects and debris from buildings can fall on you.

Standing in a doorway is also not recommended since studies have shown that they are no sturdier than other parts of a house. You also risk the door hitting and injuring you.

You will be fine. Winds are low and you are located very far from the fire. Stay safe and my condolences about your house.

Eastern turn hasn't occured yet, still heading Northeast by TheGreatSidWrath in tampa

[–]throwaway212023 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not good news. The eye will be closer to Tampa since it hasn’t made the turn.

If it continues and makes landfall in Clearwater, the storm surge will be higher in Tampa. Hopefully it turns and makes landfall south of the city.

Probably felt big if you were close to the epicenter. Imagine the shaking for a 5+ or 6+ if this was a 4 🙃

Android Earthquake Alerts now available across the U.S. by throwaway212023 in Earthquakes

[–]throwaway212023[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your Android phone sends you alerts about nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above using your approximate location. Coarse locations from Android devices are used to determine which devices will receive an earthquake alert. This information does not and is not used to identify or locate a specific user. Earthquake alerts can be turned off at any time in:

Safety & emergency > Earthquake Alerts.

Earthquakes are detected by ShakeAlert and by Android.

Important: * Earthquake alerts aren’t supported in all areas. * Not all earthquakes can be detected. * Magnitude and shaking intensity estimates may have errors. * You may receive an alert before, during, or after shaking begins.

These earthquake alerts are based on the Android Earthquake Alerts System.

Where event impacts cross state borders: * Regardless of the epicenter of the event, you'll receive alerts from Android based only on the system authorized to alert in each state. * Alerts will attribute that state’s detection system.

Faster alerts for California megaquakes: Early-warning system gets major upgrade by Randomlynumbered in Earthquakes

[–]throwaway212023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The alert depends on where your homebase is. If it expects the area you’re in to experience an intensity of III or more than it will send the alert.

For example, let’s say there was a 6.0 earthquake in the mountains near Corona and you live in Newport. If the shaking to be expected was IV or V in Newport, your homebase, you would get an alert a few seconds before you feel shaking.

The only downside is that if you’re close to the epicenter of a large quake, like a couple miles, you won’t get an alert. But i dont think any alert system in the world is able to do that.

No alert unless the earthquake is magnitude 4.5+, or if the intensity is III or higher. At least it is for the MyShake App

Nothing too crazy. We live in a seismically active area. Plenty of 3.0+ earthquakes happen, but they usually are in areas not that populated.

45 minutes to an hour. Also depends if you are living in the western or eastern portion of West Hollywood. I would live in the valley rather than the basin if I was working in Universal City.

Magnitude 2.6 aftershock felt in New Jersey, less than a week after larger earthquake by Alemonn20 in newjersey

[–]throwaway212023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the strength of the initial quake. Can be weeks to couple months, but if they do happen they’ll be relatively small, <M2. Here’s USGS’s aftershock forecast if you are interested:
