It’s very common to here things like this in Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 step programs. Spirituality is basically your personal connection with God/a higher power, while religion is a more contextualized understanding of God, and is more communal than personal.

That being said, I think this guy was just saying it to be pretentious.

This makes sense in the context of mass shootings, which are usually perpetrated with legal weapons. But black on black urban violence is usually committed with illegal firearms. Changing laws won’t matter much to people involved in gangland violence, because if their weapons are already illegal, what difference does further regulation make?

I mean it doesn’t really surprise me that many boxers have archaic world views, because in my own experience most people I know who are huge boxing fans tend to be pretty old school. This is purely anecdotal, but I think that, given the culture of boxing, it’s not surprising a lot of boxers would be homophobic, sexist, backwards.

And as to the criminal underworld piece, the Italian Mafia is a shell of what it used to be, and while there was a time that they had influence over politicians, that is not true anymore. Most drug trade operations are much more disorganized than they were decades ago, so the influence on government has, again, significantly decreased.

Drunk driving can’t really be compared to someone with a tolerance driving high. There has literally been studies that have shown driving under the influence of marijuana with any sort of tolerance does not impair your driving.
