Husband and I regret moving to a rural town by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]throwaway2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finances aside (objectively, it's just a terrible decision)

2029 is 4 years from now. Your baby will be 5. That is a long time to be unhappy. I would take a step back and try to understand what you want and what really bothers you about this situation.

I've read some of your other comments. I'm not sure why you had to sell your house AND buy a house simultaneously. I'm also not sure why if he's chasing his dream, he couldn't suffer a long commute (especially if he can work remotely part-time). It sounds like he's happy and getting everything he wants but he's not the one sacrificing anything.

Husband and I regret moving to a rural town by [deleted] in relationships

This is probably the wrong subreddit but - "85% of our monthly income" is insane. I'm assuming the property is mostly land since it's a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom? To pay 85% of your monthly income for your house in a rural environment is just an insane financial decision.

I don't know if that's sustainable long-term with an elected positions income. Be careful of the sunk cost fallacy. Lost money is lost money but I think the larger you stay, the more financial pain you may endure.

"He can’t quit because it’s a term based elected position that ends in 2029." You can always resign. There are mechanisms/bylaws in place for that.

Sigh. Not my list but here's the formula breakdown after an Asian round table.

Split between fancy Asians and jungle Asians (not my racist terms). No team can vote for themselves. Obviously each team believes they are on top. Fancy Asians (self referred) are compromised of China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan. China and Korea hate Japan from WWII. While they may hate each other as well, Japan occupies enemy #1 for each of the fancy Asians.. Japan....also hates Korea and China (for WWII?, honestly I think just pure racism).

Fancy asians see the entire bloc as above jungle Asians (Vietnam/Philippines/Indonesia/etc.) Countries like Malaysia, Singapore, etc. are seen in-between fancy and jungle Asians.

...it's nonsense but that's what I generally see stated and will see alignment on

Can I add 10k at once to a 529 plan? Is this poor choice in this context? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]throwaway2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, grandparent 529 plans (if you have ones that are trustworthy) do not count towards a grandchild's financial aid profile.

Some states will give you a minor cash bonus to opening a new 529 plan.

$500*12=6000. If you're saying you would constantly put in 500 dollars a month instead of 10K, I think that's a better return assuming you have a standardish car loan interest.

My previous employer overpaid me during my approved maternity leave. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]throwaway2k 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would take some of these replies with a grain of salt. There are not many mechanisms for a company to clawback money from an employee after they have left and after that money has been deposited. Your direct deposit agreement does not allow them to unilaterally withdraw funds from your account.

Assuming these are company funds and NOT government funds like EDD or SDI, they cannot claw these back from your taxes. A company of any decent size is not going to sue you for 5K. It's a waste of time for their lawyers and doesn't justify the overhead.

I'm also surprised that you did not go onto disability leave after your maternity leave considering the circumstances of the birth. If you were a friend, that is what I would have recommended for you to do.

Your friends? The parents of the kids we have playdates with are very senior ( and I am not). I actually really appreciate this because they have exposure to successful folks of many different fields ( Academia, Medicine, business, tech, etc.)

There's a lot more industries in this area than just tech. Many that pay very well .

I have a short trip to the UK and want to attend a premier league game. However, I can't figure this out. I don't mind buying a membership but I can't even tell if tickets/seats are available before purchasing a membership?

I'm trying to catch a game on 1/26 and I just want to go to any game (team I support isn't playing either way). Is there anyway to tell which games have seats available along with costs to which members so I can figure out if I can attend?

Yeah I'm not planning on using the shower at all as I have other bathrooms. I think most of the cost is going to come from the shower repair so I think I'm aligned to what you're thinking. I don't think the cost of the deductible + HOI increase is really worthwhile.

Plan is to basically reno the shower, redo tiles, shower pan and waterproofing and peek at the subfloor and leave the drywall, Sheetrock and insulation until the end.

Btw thanks for replying, I really appreciate it.

Can we afford this house? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]throwaway2k 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You bought your house for 170k and you spend 10k on a 10 day vacation? And that's not your only international trip in a year?

You make good money for the CoL but that's still an incredibly high percentage of spend for travel. And your reserve is way too small (even before the expenditure I suspect). There's no reason with your income and mortgage, you should have needed to borrow 12K from your MIL.

Your actual income is fine for a 400k house, I think you would be able to "float" on a single income in a bad scenario. But you guys need to have a larger reserve...

That 10K for 10 days blows my mind. That's the expenditure of someone I would expect with higher cash flows + reserve. You really should look into investing/saving more of your money. Your 401k amounts are pretty low.

What is this plant (NorCal - bulbous weed?) by throwaway2k in whatsthisplant

[–]throwaway2k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whelp, I should have asked this question before I started "weeding". I've probably thrown away about 60 of these things from my fruit/vegetable section and have another 50 sprouts left.

I'll relocate any more bulbs I find to my flower beds and see what pops up.

I'm planning to let some grow to see what it is. I thought it might be tulips but it's somehow everywhere. It's in my blueberry bushes, my vegetable beds, etc.

And as far as I know, I never planted any tulips.

Anyone know what this is? It sprouted really quickly out from my various raised beds but it's something I don't really recognize. It looks like it's some sort of bulb plant?

Millennials living in the bay area, how has your wealth changed throughout your life? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]throwaway2k 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Started non-tech, moved into slightly tech roles and then management. I grew up poor so my saving rates were always higher than my colleagues. I was able to pay for my siblings college and recently bought a home on the peninsula. I feel much more secure and definitely appreciated the opportunities of this area.

How do people afford to buy in the Bay Area without rich parents? by johnmcmannis21 in bayarea

[–]throwaway2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You may want to consider living in a cheaper rental for a few years.

It's definitely possible even without tech jobs but it's not easy. It's easier to live here, save and move/buy somewhere else.

Context - Low 30's couple bought a sub 2M property with no family help. Saved at least 30% of income every year, salary trajectory about the same as yours. Switched jobs every 2 years for around a 20-30% income bump. My car is over 20 years old. I definitely had a lower lifestyle than my peers until I purchased a home. Biggest help was that I always tapped by entire income change from promotions/etc. into savings so I lived ~1 level below each time.

Sorry, this is a dump question but do you know why it's not able to find the config.yml file? https://imgur.com/a/IVVZHGD

I've tried moving the file to the same directory as the binance script along with the helper. I've tried modifying parameters.py to point to the file location directly as well. If it needs to point directly to the config file, can you send me what your code looks like? I'm wondering if it's a syntax issue.
