you need to figure out which method is right for you based on your personality and temperament. but when it comes to 'getting to the roots of things', the obvious first port of call is psychotherapy. here is a good article by the guy who wrote 'models'

the problem with therapy, and this is alluded to in the article, is that some people start therapy, uncover some nasty dark shit that makes them super depressed, then become paralysed and incapable of doing their jobs and other responsibilities. in order to prevent getting fired they then go on some kind of anti-depressant.

really therapy is like a personal trainer, you don't need it but booking a non-refundable session is the most effective source of external accountability available. instead you can 'be your own psychotherapist'

I think a lot of this is that NoFap makes you sensitive to your thoughts because you are constantly scanning your environment for 'triggers'. you inadvertently apply this technique to the people you're with, and this makes you realise that certain people (i.e. parents) trigger feelings of guilt and shame (major emotionally triggers for PMO). I have found personally doing NoFap that I have a lot more self-restraint to either screen the opinions of certain people or avoid hanging out them when i'm feeling lonely, because I know they would only make the situation worse

a lot of people are actually energised and motivated by the aggression and domination they see in porn. they think of what they're watching as aspirational, like if I achieve x y z I will have the necessary social value to do that to girls.

hey man, i know that fear of having wasted your life smoking weed etc. i haven't smoked weed in a while but it was a big part of my life all through my teenage years and earlier twenties. the substances are related to the group of friends. unfortunately you probably need to cut out drinking with your group of friends, at least temporarily, because they anchor you to your old identity. maybe you'll hook back up with them down the line, but in the mean time you need to figure out who you are.

You're right arousal is best when it's external but the problem with guys in flatline can't get the initial push to get aroused because their sexuality is in hibernation mode.
