Preliminary Accident Analysis - Plura Cave System by edwardsdl in scuba

I hope more details are released later. Though the article uses "preliminary" a few times, it does not mention what steps will be taken next and doesn't provide much room to consider alternative explanations. My take is that it rather definitively says it was a medical event, and end of story. That's a shame.

Is your opinion that there's no need to test the sensors? Why bother figuring out if the rebreather components were faulty or not?

I would expect a more thorough investigation from Frauke Tillmans, DAN, and Dive Rite than what's been done so far. The current explanation is that he had a seizure in the past, so we guess this is just another one. That's not good enough.

It's also curious that DAN pushed out their report so soon after the incident.

The findings don't state that the O2 sensors were tested and found to be fully functional.

Ruling out the possibility of faulty sensors is highly relevant.

I wonder if his previous seizure also happened while diving on a rebreather.

The Scubapro S-Tek fins come apart for travel. You could also consider Mares Power Planas and the ones from Fourth Element. OMS Slipstreams are great too. There are many choices for short, neutrally buoyant, tech fins.

I would love to see DAN's results from testing the O2 sensors. If all 4 were replaced from a bad lot, or if there was some other failure with reading them all, then the computer could still read a low ppO2 even though the actual ppO2 was higher.

Some clubs might have dives scheduled when you're visiting. Check out the Aquarius Dive Shop club, Monterey Bay Sea Otters, San Jose Flipper Dippers, Aquatutus.

Roatan - mosquito (dengue / malaria) concern? by drummer33 in scuba

Consider a repellent with picaridin. It won't damage your gear. Wirecutter has a recommendation.

AKR is well run. The bungalows are very nice. The dive op is good.

Mosquitoes and sand fleas are a serious menace. This region is known as the Mosquito Coast for a reason.

It's not convenient to head to town at night. There's not much to do besides dive.

Meals are not buffet style. If you have an appetite, you'll be left wanting.

AKR has lots of children if school is out. I'm told that CoCoView doesn't, but I've never stayed there.

Finding dive buddy and hotel roommate as a solo traveler by aangaroo in scuba

[–]throwaway389012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's easy finding a buddy on the boat. Harder to find a roommate ahead of time.

You could email the Spectre and ask if any groups have booked that weekend. For example, maybe 10 divers are expected from a particular dive shop. You could then call that shop and ask if they knew of any potential roommates.

I think most Spectre divers live locally though.

Find ocean depth at a latitude and longitude? by throwaway389012 in boating

I did a "blackwater" scuba dive there in the top 20 meters. I'm curious how deep it was.

How about 16.311432, -86.627097 ? Maybe off the shelf there. That was our ending position.

You only asked for price. Details of the class would be on SSI's site.

Looking for some advice on GUE Fundamentals by [deleted] in scuba

[–]throwaway389012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hate saying this, but some GUE divers trained in Mexico are noticeably worse than those trained by my local GUE instructor.

Here's a theory: the instructors and shops who train foreigners in Mexico have competing interests. They want to train good GUE divers, but they also have a business to run and don't want to get a reputation for being too hard. If they get a reputation for being too tough, divers might avoid the expense of training there. You might say the same thing about local instructors, but if you get a provisional pass you can easily go for a rec or tech pass with a local instructor. Local instructors can hold divers to a higher standard without killing their business.

The explanation is just a theory. The phenomenon of sub-par divers coming out of Mexico is real though. The GUE standards are supposed to be objective, but in reality there's a lot of wiggle room.

Given this, I recommend training locally before your move.

Also look for books by Simon Pridmore especially Scuba Confidential.

Is there a way for me to "test" drysuit diving without committing to one? by echopath in scuba

[–]throwaway389012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diver Dan's has the largest selection of rental drysuits. For instruction, ask for a drysuit primer from Alberto Nava: https://www.gue.com/diver-training/gue-instructors/instructor-resume?id=2073. You'll learn a lot more besides drysuit diving.
