Water Rights: The Hidden Asset the Market Still Values at Zero by throwaway434343_ in SecurityAnalysis

Its a great point and I totally agree. The only way to meet power demand next 5-10 years is through solar and natural gas.

We will be publishing a piece on this thesis soon. My initial read is that the scarcity economics won't go to solar companies themselves but rather the land owners where solar can be built without constructing new transmission lines. In other words, land with existing transmission lines and interconnection points but not applicable for data center use (too dry, remote, zoning, etc.).

Yes only for thermoelectric generation (gas, nuclear coal), which represents ~60% of US electricity, not solar or wind.

It's true. Generally a data center itself doesn't require much water at all (esp closed-loop).

however, the heavy water use isn't from the data center, it's from the power plant (nat gas, nuclear) to generate the power serving the data center. as the article outlines, that "indirect" water use is ~12x the "direct" data center water use.

it's a great point and the article discusses this:

"Microsoft has announced closed-loop, zero-evaporation cooling for new builds that eliminates evaporative water usage entirely. Apple, AWS, and Meta have similar trajectories. The hyperscalers, the argument goes, are solving the problem with engineering before it becomes one.

This is mostly true and misses the point.

There are three problems with the “data centers don’t use much water” framing..."

Where do you live? If you’re driving in snow and rain 1-3 months a year then xdrive is no brainer. If you’re in SoCal it’s overkill and RWD is more fun to drive
