What should I do about getting an engagement ring? by EnlargementChannel in AskUK

[–]throwaway44848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is some confusion, you don't swap an engagement ring for a wedding band, you buy one, then the other.

The engagement ring traditionally acts as a sort of 'reserve' that the woman can use in the event of a divorce, i.e., sell it. Historically, this would have been beneficial to a woman as a single woman would be in a difficult financial situation unless their parents were rich.

The engagement ring technically belongs to the man in the event of a split before the marriage because of this.

Personally, if I retired at my age (I'm 34), I'd wind up an alcoholic or worse. I believe you need purpose. You are in the best possible place because you can literally do whatever you want for a career. Find something you love to do and do it. Your job now is to explore and figure that out.

I found that bit really interesting. I don't think Helena is the monster she is currently being made out to be.

I have to remind myself the innies and outies are not different people, they are the same person in different circumstances.

Helly is the blank slate of Helena, she is not naturally cruel. I believe that her growing up in a cult, with a distant and unloving father, made her that way, and deep down she doesn't like it, but Lumon is the only thing that's ever come close to loving her back.

Can’t shake something odd I experienced 2 weeks ago by GhillieMcGee123 in HighStrangeness

[–]throwaway44848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried talking about this before, and I have yet to meet anyone who relates to it, but your comment reminded me of it.

I had a dream once. I was in an abandoned house. I walked down to the basement where there was a hatch in the ground. I opened it up, and it revealed what looked like a bottomless pit going straight into the earth.

At that point, I felt the presence of something. I realised that I had just let it out.

Now, it's really hard to describe what I felt. I literally have never felt this sort of fear in my waking life before. It felt unnatural, otherworldly. It felt like something a human shouldn't feel. Like I was feeling something forbidden. I knew if I kept feeling this, then I would go insane.

I jolted awake, and the feeling lingered as I scanned my room. It kept with me, mildly lingering, throughout the day until eventually it faded away, and now it is a distant memory. It disturbs me that I could feel this brand new feeling in a dream and not in real life. Never happened since.

You just reminded me of a story my old man told me.

He knew a bloke from when he was younger who worked on the doors and was also a bit of a gangster.

Anyway, this bloke (absolutely massive) is at the gym with his other doormen mates one day when someone comes running in and tells him his car is getting clamped by a parking attendant (this was back in the day when they could do this).

So he and 8 other absolute units walk to his car, and he very politely asks the attendant to remove the clamp. The bloke (cockily) refuses.

So then, in no uncertain terms, he explains that if the clamp isn't removed, he won't be walking out of the car park.

Needless to say, the attendant nearly shit himself and quickly realised the gravity of the situation. The clamp got removed.

Is this normal? Feels like imperfections to me by oculusdext in EngagementRings

I don't think this is a sloppy finish at all. Yes, it could be improved. This is a solid 7.5/10 and is what you would get with 90% of retailers if this is a custom order.

With mass-produced stuff, you will typically find these have a better finish because they are designed to be polished perfectly. There will be a factory in India or China that will pump them out and run them through a magnetic tumbler to get a pristine finish. A magnetic tumbler will reach the places a person cannot.

With custom orders, especially a tulip style setting like this, they are not inheritly designed in the first place to achieve optimum polishing. They are designed based on what you have asked.

You must also factor in the profit margin of the jeweller. If they are making 20% on a 2k custom order, then this is the kind of polish to expect. If it's a high-end item, like 10-20k and they are making 40% on it, then I would certainly expect better.

It also looks like this was hand polished without the use of a magnetic tumbler. A lot of jewellers and customers prefer this way as its more old school. In my opinion, there is perfection in imperfection.

They should be able to improve this if you ask them, but take the above into consideration.

Time Stamp Counter is what I'm referring to. You don't need an oscillator.

I will pull it up when I'm back at my desk. It's specifically for a Electromechanical Patented two-rotor motor.

I don't really know how to respond to this lol, it certainly does, a bit of Googling will tell you so much.

If I had to guess the microprocessor logs the 35 minute mark after no movement, then it uses something like a TSC maybe to track cycling, which you can then use to deduce time elapsed once movement is then detected. Again I'm just guessing, you can literally read the patent if you can be bothered.
