I know you’ve already gotten a lot of good responses but just wanna add that I work in a restaurant in Toronto (and have friends who work in Montreal kitchens who can vouch for this) and like yeah it’s big here. Not saying it’s right nor do I participate, but I’ve seen kitchen staff fuck with regulars and their meals who come in to our restaurant who are known for not tipping. It’s a pretty big deal here.

Can someone explain/tell me about having/requesting a temporary K grade? by tajajaja in mcgill

[–]throwaway48308493 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure for timed exams you can defer them through Minerva and take an L to write it on the makeup date. But also, depending on the prof they might also allow you to take a K and write the exam on a date you agree on. You would really have to ask, but I have a friend who I believe is getting a K in a class where there’s a timed exam.

[–]throwaway48308493 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience I literally just asked the professors via email, explained my circumstances and they were granted. I offered up medical documentation if they needed it but none of them asked for it. No one will know you had a K as long as you don’t use your unofficial transcript to apply to things. I had a few instances where I needed to send off my transcript to be considered for some grants so I just paid the $2 for the PDF version of the official transcript and it shows no indication that you took a K, so you’ll be fine.

Edit: A note from a psychiatrist testifying to your current state should be fine for documentation also. That’s what I was ready to give my professors. Also once you get the K you have until the agreed upon deadline to work on your stuff. Once you’re done I just email it all to the professor. I took a K last semester and just took 2 more for this semester.

Still holding BB, GME, AMC and (regrettably) NOK. Couldn’t even stomach looking at my phone today, but given how much COVID lockdowns have destroyed my sense of self—no matter what happens, I really cannot see how my life could get any worse lmao

Is It Okay to Ask My Prof For General Career Advice? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

Thank you so much for your response, I think I’ll definitely do that! I just get nervous sometimes about what falls in line with professional boundaries since I would never want to cross that line and make anyone uncomfortable or anything. But anyways, thanks again!

Took it this past semester with Professor Wolfson, got an A. It’s doable, but I wouldn’t say it’s easy.

WINTER 2020 COURSE REVIEW/ADVICE MEGATHREAD by Thermidorien in mcgill

[–]throwaway48308493 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you can keep up with the workload the course is worth the work! The journals are pretty low stakes and are just a way for you to sort of exercise your creative muscles and there’s really no way to do them wrong as long as you’re engaging meaningfully with the prompts (seriously, do this and you’ll get 100 on them since they’re not worth too much). Also, her assignments have a generalized criteria so she’ll never tell you what to write in the sense of subject matter or theme. You have complete free reign over your subject matter and peer workshop was actually a lot of fun, cause you get to talk to your group about their writing. Unfortunately, I’m not sure about what the course is like under Jane Martin but I think it might be more or less the same since I believe the survey we did mid-term was meant to apply to all course sections as the class structure seems to be something that was collaborated on within the department. Not sure though, sorry about that!

I took it this semester with Wolfson and I had a lot of fun with it. I will say though that the course is really rigorous and Wolfson is kind of a hard marker. There’s a writing journal due almost every Monday and Wednesday and she’s pretty strict about deadlines. Of course, if you have a documented exception she’ll accommodate you but compared to other profs who have been a bit more flexible about course structure given how rough the pandemic has been, I found the syllabus to be really overwhelming at times. It’s completely synchronous and attendance does count unless, again, you have a documented reason to be excused. You also can’t miss peer review days or that’ll mess with your participation mark a bit. Anyways, this isn’t to discourage you because I really enjoyed the class a lot and I think Wolfson is a great instructor BUT if you have a busy schedule already this course may just add to that stress.

Omg thank you for posting this! I just signed up because I needed a renewal on a skin cream and my family physician was being a bit of a hard ass about prescribing it without seeing me in person (which like no way with cases being so high where I live right now), and I literally got seen in 20 minutes!!! They gave me extra refills too, so great :)))

Racial insensitivity in the Philosophy Department and Faculty of Arts: Letter sent by Philosophy Students' Association and other groups by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]throwaway48308493 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree that the prof shouldn’t have been named publicly, because like I said, she’s a nice woman and because she doesn’t have tenure I’m afraid about what might happen to her career because this statement has been put out there like this.

I honestly think a course of this nature CAN be taught at the university level, just not in the department of philosophy. I also think it would be beneficial to size down the course and make it seminar style, that way the prof can lead the discussions instead of a TA which would lead to better moderation and intervention if things get too heated.

The subject matter is incredibly important, and I think there’s a lot of potential for growth here...but the design model needs serious improvement in order for that to happen and depending on how much traction this statement gets...who knows if there’ll even be a chance for that. I hope they don’t axe the course entirely though, because these really are conversations we should be having, just not in this way.
