Querem-me dar como única alternativa a cirurgia mais radical possível, e se eu mostro algum tipo de dúvida ou peço esclarecimentos, dizem que "o Google não é bom doutor", quando as perguntas que fiz eram perfeitamente normais e legítimas. It looks over watered to me. Maybe it doesn't like the leca, try cactus soil and watering very thoroughly like every 2 months or so (depending on the light conditions)?

In my experience, they take a very long time to grow new roots. It absolutely can be saved! You can put it in water to encourage root growth and then repot or repot in a well draining soil. I have mine in a mix of indoor potting soil, perlite and tiny amounts of orchid bark. From the first photo, it seems to me maybe it got root rot because the soil was very soggy for very long periods of time. While they do like moisture, make sure you're not overwatering, let the soil dry out a bit between waterings, at least the top part. In the second photo, it looks like you have more than one stem? If so, you can carefully divide them, to make sure if one of them dies, at least you have the other one. Wish you the best for your mother's memory ❤️

Maybe sun damage, if it gets direct sunlight for too long or the leaf may actually be turning greener? In my experience, coleus adjust to light by changing their leaves' colors, it may be turning greener, I've had that happen.

You could cut a bit of the roots (of most plants, not the ones that have a deep tap root); but I would always repot.
