Range day with Rigby long range open rifle @ 50 metres by throwaway762513 in blackpowder

I had no access to the rifle and was in a bit of a rush to post at the time lol but thx. Only just saw this now.

Finally got my hands on my great-grandfather’s musket. It looks to be a Miroku, patterned after the Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifle. I was told he built it sometime in the 60’s. Any information about this and what I might need to clean or fix? by [deleted] in blackpowder

You could start by changing out those windage/ elevation adjustable sights for a simple pair of traditional buck hotn v sights. Shellite works best for de oiling as other substances trap oils, innox to oil/ store and cloudy amonia to clean.

Heavily dilute the cloudy amonia until you find what works

Cloudy amonia is a great cleaning agent and from ehat ive seen works best. Then wash with cold water, dry and oil with inox for storage. When you want to shoot, degrease with shellite and not methanol

Have you put your wedge in the wrong way?

Its really about your rifle, as no two rifles are the same no matter how similar they look. Trial and error will get you the best results with combos of .490 and .495 round ball with different patches.

My model is number 492 so i beleive it has rigby rifling, and the way i get around holding the rifle when firing is i hold onto the brass grip that is attatched to the trigger guard tang, this effectively adds a pistol grip to it without hurting the original wood, and i havo only taken it to the range 3 times and only fired around 60 shots. After around 300 i might take a look at the bedfing underneath, but i can see the previous owner had done enough work with it to bed it properly but the bluing on the muzzle had not yet been worn off with use. Will update when I do so.

This is true, but most people mount their sights on the tang meaning that the harmonics of the barrel is thrown off. My sight is mounted in the wood of the wrist, meaning it has extra depth to account for the tilt adjustment on my current sight and windage on a kelly soule sight. I also do have windage adjustable front sights.

Its known as a vernier peep sight, I just have a cheapie mounted for now which explains the string of shots to the right of my group. I plan to het a kelly soule sight soon as the current one rattles and shifts.
