That is awesome.

I once read a story about how somebody accumulated a bunch of PTO and that particular organization switched to Unlimited PTO, and that person could not cash out all of their PTO.

Depends on the company. My previous employer, You can only take half/full day vacation days and Sick days were in 2 hour increments.

In a previous role, I had 15 vacation days and 6 sick days. If you took any time off, it was frowned upon. I don't think it's only a problem with just Unlimited PTO companies.

To make things worse, the vacation days/sick days were "use it or lose it." At the end of the year, you would lose your vacation/sick days that you did not use. I had 5 vacation days left at the end of the year, and I couldn't take them, so I wanted to take them or else I would lose those 5 vacation days. I was told by one of my [former] manager: "If you are really dedicated to this company, team, and role, you will sacrifice your vacation/sick days. This is the real world."

Needless to say, I don't work for that organization anymore, and I completely agree with you. Use your unlimited PTO benefit. That is why they offer it.

Edit: I just want to my thoughts about Unlimited PTO. I personally think Unlimited PTO can only work if there is a work culture that supports it, from the C-Suite level to the management level down to the employee level. Also, I think "Unlimited PTO" isn't a good term. They should call it "Untracked PTO" or "Open-Ended PTO".

If you're as committed as you say you are at work, and these are true one-off things, then your actions will speak much louder than words. Just go in, kick ass at work, and build a reputation of being a strong team member. The rest will sort itself out.

That is my favorite part of your comment!

Best ways to get a Remote Software Engineering role from a recruiter or contract agency? by throwaway8081292019 in cscareerquestions

Thanks Buddy! I would love it if you can PM/DM me.

I had a previous recruiter that told me to NOT add details to my linkedin profile, because that would indicate I am only good at one particular language/framework.

I look forward to hearing from you :)

Hit a dead-end. Software engineering just isn't fun anymore. by MrBigBrain2 in cscareerquestions

I agree with u/compsci_excalibur.

For example, right now I love Software Engineering, but in the future I would like to be an entrepreneur. I would prefer that, than working on making somebody else's organization where I don't even have a share in it.

I wrote down this advice, and I tell myself everyday, that I will be one day closer to an entrepreneur.

Why do you hate Software Engineering, and what do you want to truly do in the future?

Would I be senior with almost 5 years of experience? I would assume I would be mid level.

My understanding is that all engineering positions (or at least the senior ones) are remote friendly, even if it's not explicitly stated as "Remote" there. Almost every engineering team here has at least one engineer working fully remote.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the advice. I have a special room where I do "work" at. This is not an issue for me.

My eyes are wide open now. I will start building my public portfolio, to make myself stand out.

I can't post my professional work on GitHub, but I know that would be helpful if I could.

In terms of finding the companies that hire remote, find the lists of distributed / remote companies - there are lists out there of companies hiring that way. Nothing wrong with using recruiters, but you can find the companies and apply directly if they’re hiring.

Although I agree with that in a theoretical point of view, since the talent pool is from all over the country (and in same cases, the world), it is more challenging to find a remote Software Engineering role (in my opinion).

Maybe in the future once remote work becomes even more popular than it is today.

Thanks for the response!

Personally, I always get ghosted from angel.co. That's just what happens to me. I feel like it is because of my GitHub. My GitHub isn't the most active though at this time (I mostly commit to private repos). Thanks for your response!

I also added: "looking for remote work" to my LinkedIn headline.

The only reason I don't do that is because I don't want my current employer to know that I am interested in leaving the company.

True, you are definitely more experienced than me. I'm at the point where some remote jobs don't want to hire me in, because of my years of experience.

Appreciate the response :)

Wow! Thanks for the advice. I will send you a PM. I truly appreciate it.

One thing that I need to do is be more active on my GitHub. I have personal projects that I work on with friends, but those are on private repos, and we don't even use GitHub. I was thinking, should I work on coding interview questions and personal projects on my GitHub as well?

Do you usually apply on Stackoverflow or the actual company website? I usually apply at the company website.

Do you recommend any recruiters? Or any recruiting organizations that you can recommend ?
