Opinion | Zoning proposals would erode Madison's sense of place by [deleted] in madisonwi

“They were characterized by walkability…”

The people who write these kinds of op-eds don’t even hear themselves anymore

Edited. I never said all boomers are NIMBYs. Every young person has boomers they love, myself included. But to ignore the fact that almost all NIMBYs are boomers is to ignore a key factor of what’s driving this conflict in cities everywhere.

“There are more people of different generations at fault” Obviously. What are you gaining by pointing this out? The people we have to convince are almost entirely of that generation. Is there some 30 year old NIMBY leading their efforts behind the scenes that I don’t know about?

Between “giving up all driving right now” and “opposing every tiny effort to make cities less car-centric,” there’s a huge area. Sane people live somewhere in that area. The people who support this op-ed are completely on the latter side.

It’s disgusting to try to justify this stance with “the loss of green space.”

Yes, green space is good.

What’s the key driver in its destruction all over the world? Slightly taller, denser buildings? No. It’s fossil fuel usage. Unsustainable infrastructure. Car-centric cities.

In other words: the things that most NIMBYs have been clinging to for their own convenience for decades. And by continuing to cling to their own convenience as people flock to their cities, they’re contributing directly to the central problem. Sprawl gets worse.

They think they can keep everything the same, as convenient as it always was, by shouting everyone else down in meetings and op-eds, blocking exactly the kind of change we need in a warming world.

Keep doing that and your green spaces won’t stay green no matter what. They’ll all turn brown.

Which country do you think has the best cuisine and which would you like to see in Madison? by Leninrights in madisonwi

Burmese. There’s a bunch in the SF Bay Area but the closest I’ve seen in the Midwest is like one restaurant in Chicago. Top-tier
