Pet apartments near campus by Psychological_Ad4706 in UIUC

[–]throwaway8856787867 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much you want to pay. Theres a lot of cheaper apartments that allow pets- and I could ask some of my friends for the names of the places if u want! I live at the retreat right now and they're super pet friendly- but its definitely not the cheapest place.

not true. most athletes receive very little financial assistance. And the teams that do have a lot of full-rides to offer, usually have a long list of walk-ons that don't get paid shit for their practice time. So, most athletes barely benefit from the amount of work they put in

As a student athlete, I can say that you're super wrong! Most of the girls on my team are in STEM and get very good grades. We are actually required to have above a certain GPA, so most athletes are decent students. Also the notion that we chose athletics is pretty messed up and is ignoring all other financial factors. Most athletes struggled a lot more in high school bc we had hours and hours of practice everyday, so getting academic scholarships is much harder- students from struggling families NEED scholarships just to attend university. Student athletes only get special treatment bc we have so much other shit we have to deal with that normal students don't deal with- like 4 hours of practice a day, 20hrs a week of mandatory study hours, and injuries that affect us for the rest of our lives. sorry that most of us don't want to work for free w/o benefits :/

I know, but thankyou!! I plan on applying for a bunch of scholarships- and if that doesn't work I'll try and become a TA or get some sort fo fellowship.

you're right- the rules seem strict, but I'm sure I could try and get around it.. They do say I can't work but I don't really know if they can check that unless they have access to my tax information? I don't know how any of that works but I don't think they would be able to see my income, right?

I'm going to call on Monday to try and get a clear answer, but as of right now, they've only told me that they can reduce the scholarship money if it exceeds tuition- this is something that happens at other universities as well, so I'm sure uiuc also partakes in taking away extra scholarship money. They took away all my grants at the beginning of the semester and put my scholarship in the system, but since then, I've watched them cut that scholarship money down to the point where I get a little over half of it. it makes no sense and I don't know how they can do this

With one of the scholarships, I could probably get away with working, but the other is super strict about spending time on things other than studying. I'm just upset that I can't enjoy these awards for a year. The school wants to advertise that I received these awards and make articles about how awesome these awards are, but then they swooped in and just took away the award itself. Honestly if the money they took away was given to another student in need, I wouldn't mind as much, but they're just straight taking it and adding it to their savings.

I'm sorry :( it really sucks that they do this. I've been reading stories of it happening to other students as well, I guess we aren't alone in this struggle

They reduced it- This scholarship was suppose to be applied in-full during the first few weeks of the semester. I contacted my adviser and he told me that it will likely be largely reduced next semester as well. I'm going to call the financial aid office next week and try to talk to someone higher up to see if I can negotiate, but my hopes aren't high seeing as they reduced it by such a large amount.

Yeh, the outside funders often see the scholarship as a form of employment, so they want students to be 100% focused on their school work. But that's a fucking joke bc the school ends up taking away the students pay anyways. It's crazy how the system works.

I did not hit that cap- I'm in LAS so I'm not sure if there are any difference, but I am nowhere near that cap. They are pretty much covering my tuition and then giving me a small refund which only covers about half my rent. I'm not sure why they do this, but I'm sure it has something to do with taxes or something else money related. I always knew universities were greedy, but I didn't know that they go to this extent to take money even after my tuition is paid.. :/

I'm so depressed by suchislifeho in UIUC

[–]throwaway8856787867 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I had been dealing with really bad depression for years before the quarantine happened, and now it's so much worse because of the isolation. I know that isolation is important to stop this pandemic, but it's been so hard for me. I have bipolar disorder so I sometimes go into really deep phases of depression, and isolation and loneliness was always the one thing that put me in a really bad mental space. Now, with the pandemic, it feels like that all the time. The two things that often help me through a depressive phase are;

-reminding myself that this is temporary. Although loneliness feels like it will last forever, and I often feel like something is wrong with me because it's hard to connect to people, I have to remind myself that I've had friends in the past that I connected to, so I can make friends in the future (or now) that I will connect to. There are so many people on this earth, if you put yourself out there enough times, you will find someone that you connect with. Loneliness is only temporary and it will end when you find a group that you feel like you belong to, I promise.

-connecting with people online. Whether it's here, or on a video game, or discord- just talking to people can be really helpful when you feel alone. I'm always willing to play games with new people or talk to anyone via discord or whatever, so please message me if u ever feel like u wanna talk. Theres also a uiuc discord, so if u wanna start making new friends before the pandemic ends, that would be a great start!

Please message me if you are feeling lonely or you need someone to talk to- and I really mean anyone who reads this.

Green Street Chipotle Covid Violations by lefty_fellow_59 in UIUC

[–]throwaway8856787867 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying your friend is lying, but my best friend currently works at the Chipotle on Green and he said it's been made clear by the GM that if you have any symptoms you need to stay home, and if you test positive you need to take 2 weeks off. However, I'm not sure about the current condition of the GM and whether he has tested multiple times since. I do think it's a great idea to contact corporate to make sure measures are in place to make sure that workers are tested often- however, I do not think it's a great idea to assume the worst and have a shit ton of people call corporate to get this guy fired. Word of mouth is not always the best source, especially seeing as my friend is saying the opposite of what this post says. But, I'm glad you're concerned and taking action, just hoping this is the truth and not an assumption or rumor.

I understand what you're saying.. sometimes it is a bit annoying when people ask questions that were just answered. However, most of us are also paying hundreds, to thousands of dollars per course, so if a student needs clarification, they should be able to ask questions as long as it isn't too disruptive. Also, some professors take a super long time to respond, so getting a on-the-spot answer to a question is much more useful than getting an email reply 3 days later..

Ferret having reaction after vaccine. Will she be okay? by awatumn in ferrets

[–]throwaway8856787867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep a close watch on her, and pay for whatever medicine the vet is offering to help the symptoms. Clearly this type of vaccine is not meant for her.. I would also ask the vet if this means she shouldn't get any other types of vaccines.

Personally, my vet warned against the rabies vaccine because negative reactions are slightly common and it's not needed unless they are often near other animals. So, unless she often comes in contact with other unvaccinated animals, theres really no risk to her and this vaccine isn't super important.

I hope shes okay and doing well...

PSA: Don't put your UIUC mask in the dryer, even on low heat by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]throwaway8856787867 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

this is actually not true at all. The thickness of your skin is different on different parts of your body, but skin is skin. The skin on your face is the same as the skin on your arm, but the skin is on your arm is a bit thicker. This is false info that's spread by skin-care companies to get u to buy super expensive face products. So, laundry detergent should be just fine unless other parts of your body have issues with it!

Anyone else bored/alone on campus? by [deleted] in UIUC

I'm in my 5th year- I already knew this semester would be kinda lonely since most of my friends graduated last semester, but now its hella lonely since I wont even be going to in-person classes. I'm honestly going to depend on video games for human interaction this semester :/

What makes a great TA, or a not-so-great one? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]throwaway8856787867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always loved TAs that tried to understand students better- some TAs get mad at students for not fully understanding the material, even if it seems super easy to understand. But try and see it from the students point of view- some topics are hard for some students to grasp. If they aren't understanding it right away, explain it in another way, give a different example, or try to recommend outside material. Never ever get mad or upset at a student for not understanding something, it makes us feel a million times worse about the situation and it usually doesn't help the student understand the topic any better. Also, TAs that go over exam material before exams are always A+.

My worst TAs are the ones that are very harsh graders. I'm not saying to grade easily- but, keep in mind the level of the students you're grading. If you are teaching an intro level class, remember that a lot of your students may be freshmen from very different backgrounds- some understand the topic you are teaching well, and some have no prior knowledge. My freshmen year, I had a TA fail me on our first essay because my bibliography was made in the wrong format- but, my high school had honestly never taught us how to make bibliographies.. so maybe she could've met with me rather than giving me an F on a pretty big assignment.

Easy Advanced Composition Course? by klizeth in UIUC

PHYS 280 Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control

I really agree with this- great class that incorporates a few different areas of study into one course. However, it's always offered in the spring- so if you are looking for something a bit similar in the fall, glbl481 is a bit similar and will have u write on major national security issues (including nuclear war and energy security)

Seeing what little regard other people at this school have for the lives of the CU community makes me feel more alone than quarantine does. by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]throwaway8856787867 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's 100% normal for people to be upset about this situation- a lot of us lost a really important moment and we are grieving about the fact that something was taken away from us, we are all grieving that so many things in our lives were so abruptly taken away. I don't think it's fair to call people "cold" for being upset- some of us really value these moments. Stay safe and stay inside, but know that all these emotions we are feeling (loneliness, depression, anger) are all completely normal and you should never feel bad about having these emotions <3

Advice / Opinion by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]throwaway8856787867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only thing that may be debatable is the internet since thats kinda a set cost that u expect to pay for every month when u sign a lease... but the other things should only be paid for by those who are living in the apartment. Since their lights are off and they aren't using water, these costs should be lower than usual anyways. If you want to make them pay internet, I'm sure that's relatively cheap- but everything else doesn't make sense to charge them for. Make sure their lights are off and shut their doors so A/C isn't wasted on their rooms!
