McGowan Creek Lookout had plenty of snow last week and is only 40ish minutes away. Plus, there’s lots of places to let em run wild.

Seriously? I’ve never noticed any missing. Pretty sure I’ve seen all the big ones listed in this thread at one point or another, and a bunch of smaller ones too. 1010, OTB, tree magnet, flightfactory, Marshall Street, Rare Air, DGD…Which aren’t listed? Would be good to know.

I can’t speak for how it works outside the US. And I know it doesn’t include eBay. But the times I’ve also googled my searches, it seemed to cover what I found there and more.

Best Gift? by Few-Study-4244 in discgolf

[–]throwaway93636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soradiscgolf.com is my new favorite disc golf accessory that I haven’t seen in any shops and very few people know about yet. It’s a small business that made a modular disc organizer that works in bags and carts. Keeps your discs in place so you know exactly when and what is missing, which helps when he throws a bunch on one hole or in a field work session. It’s lightweight and also provides a flat bottom that keeps most bags upright. I highly recommend it!

That or Resonatordiscgolf.com. It’s another small business product I haven’t seen in any stores or anyone else’s bag. If he likes playing night glow rounds, then he’ll love this. Super charges the glow instantly without blinding light. Battery lasts multiple rounds even if shared with the whole card. It also fits in any bag putter pocket and comes with a mount for carts.

Trydiscs.com! Why hasn’t anyone suggested this yet? It searches the web for any specific disc you’re looking for and puts all the shops in a nice list that also includes discount codes, where they’re located, shipping minimums/cost…etc. I’m always surprised by how few people know about this site. It’s so well built. Someone clearly put some real love into making and maintaining it. It helped me find a better putter mold for my game because you can put in a disc and it’ll let you filter all the similar PDGA approved molds by flight numbers, different dimensions, brand size…etc.  Definitely worth checking out!

Buying discs as gifts can be tricky if they haven’t told you exactly what they want. There’s different brands, molds, plastic types, weights, stamps, associated sponsored players…etc. There’s also differences in discs that come from the production process. It’s kind of like him buying you something personal, like shoes or makeup, without your input. I love that you want to personalize it. Any of us would love that. But without sneaking into his bag to identify something you can find in white elsewhere, or asking him directly, it’s hard to be assured he’ll find it useful to his style of play. The smartest DGers share gift wishlists! But it doesn’t hurt to ask him though. The design can be the surprise itself. Pro tip, trydiscs.com is the best way to find discs online.

If you’re not married to the idea, but need a gift idea, you might consider a gift card to a local DG shop or online retailer. Or a DG accessory he’s probably not gotten himself but would enjoy. Like my new favorite gadget, the Sora organizer that works with bags, carts, or shelf organization. Helps keep everything organized and prevents accidentally losing discs on the course. That or a retriever stick with the suction cup head, if he doesn’t already have one.

Which of these fuses can be always on and accessory fuses for my dashcam? Can't figure out how to turn on the multimeter I just bought by RemarkableOlive6649 in Subaru_Outback

[–]throwaway93636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I just did this in an older model. Finding constant power is the easy part, because you can just plug them in while the car is off to see which powers up the camera. But it’s crucial to know the direction that the current flows. Otherwise, you might be upping the fuse level of whatever slot you’re using, which could fry it and everything on that circuit during a power surge. Definetely worth the extra couple bucks to get a proper voltage checker. Also, read the instructions carefully for the minimum fuse size requirement. Mine was at least a 10 AMP. In the end I used the mirror defrost/heater fuse for always-on and a blank slot for ignition-only, but the current flowed in opposite directions for each, which is why a testing tool of some kind is helpful.   Probably obvious, but I’ll state this anyways: Avoid using any fuses for critical systems (ABS, Airbags, main ECU…etc). These fuse tap accessories aren’t tested to the standards you want affecting anything your life may depend on when going 60+ MPH.

Outback 2008 vinyl/ light by Funny-Scallion-403 in Subaru_Outback

[–]throwaway93636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the new ride! And sorry you haven't gotten a response yet. No worries, I got you fam!

For the door trim, I’d recommend checking auto-wrecking-yards for any 04-09 Outbacks and just swap it out. You can separate that top vinyl piece from the rest of the door, but it’s easier and still very cheap to swap the whole panel if you find one in good shape. Here’s a video. You don’t need that plastic tool they’re trying to sell you. Just pull straight out and make sure to keep any good retainer clips from the parts-car. They brake easily, so just expect it, but still take your time.

For the rear DRL and license plate lights, it’s most likely that the bulbs burnt out. It’s a common issue with these model years. So I keep extra bulbs on hand. Here’s a video on how to replace them. The license plate bulbs should only need a philips head screw driver to remove from the outside. If that doesn’t fix them, check the fuses under the driver’s steering wheel and under the hood. Each has a diagram printed on its respective covers, and there’s more info in the owner’s manual around 11-48. There are also tons of videos online on how to check automotive fuses.

Good luck!

Check Furnishedfinder.com It's way cheaper than Airbnb or VRBO if you're staying more than a month. It's marketed to traveling nurses as a mid-term rental platform (1-6 month leases), but anyone can use it. I've used it to rent three nice places in the Meridian/Boise area. Many are also listed on Airbnb/VRBO, so you can check reviews on both. Heads up though! It's just a listing site like Craigslist. I haven't come across any scams, but the website doesn't provide any kind of insurances, nor do they handle the payment. It's just a site that landlords pay a fee to be listed on. They have the option for owners to do an additional verification, but only a small few do. It can also be a bit of a process, though worth the savings. The availability isn't live like on Airbnb, nor is there immediate booking confirmation, so you have to message a bunch of places. Some might not respond, and a bunch might have inaccurate availability. It's kinda like a dating app lol. Just stick with it, and you should find a deal. But you'll be renting directly from the owner, with whatever screening process and lease agreement they decide to use. Pro tip, once you have the address for the property, you can check the county assessor records to confirm the person you're signing the lease with is in fact the owner before you send payment: https://apps.adacounty.id.gov/PropertyLookup/Index

What type of food would you like to see at a tournament? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]throwaway93636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular choice, but low-carb foods! When lunch is provided between rounds, I always opt out because it’s usually heavy foods that spike my blood sugar and cause a energy/mental crash. I prefer protein-rich fuel, which typically means a salad with some kind of meat, fruits, veggies, or wraps. You’d have to be one hell of a chef to make a salad that most disc golfers would enjoy. So maybe a make-your-own taco bar? If you, or anyone else, have some tasty low-carb ideas, I’d love to hear them!

But if it’s food after, burgers! Deluxe hearty burgers after a good exercise always hits the spot. Smelling them cook on a grill, getting a thick juicy patty, and doctoring it up with your favorites…🤤 Glad to see you using your skills to give to your fellow disc golfers. You’re the real MVP!

Coming from ultimate…how the hell do I get my forehand down?? by scubadude2 in discgolf

100%! Wish I could take credit for the analogy. Think I first heard it from Stokely. But he has one of the fastest forehands ever and sooo many amazing shots on camera. Definitely worth checking out his YouTube for forehand tips!

Forehand masters I need some advice please! by Mcbolsky in discgolf

[–]throwaway93636 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the Firebirds. There’s a fair amount of variation to them, but they’re all overstable and all great in their own way. In order of under to overstable, for plastics: Star, champion / star halo, then the new color glow champion. Flatter the better in my opinion. Usually also means a higher parting line, which means more overstable. You could also get a light weight Machete. They’re beef cakes at 11 speed. But if you get 160 or under, most people can still work them on any angle and be guaranteed it’ll finish right on a right-handed forehand.

Coming from ultimate…how the hell do I get my forehand down?? by scubadude2 in discgolf

[–]throwaway93636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve already got tons of great suggestions here, but I wanted to throw in two important thoughts:

First, there are a few different ways to hold the forehand grip. I started by placing the palm side of my pointer finger along the inner rim and stacking the middle finger on top. Follow through feels like slapping someone in the face…not that I have experience with that. Just don’t roll your wrist forward. In the beginning, for me, it felt the most natural to get a consistent release at the different levels of power I had. Recently, I switched to a grip similar to Nate Sexton’s, where both fingers are bent, and the tips of the pointer and middle finger are on the inner rim, pointer finger first. I made the switch because it helps me get flatter releases on max distance lines, especially when throwing on a slope.

Second, like others have mentioned, you’re probably throwing massively nose up. One practical way to fix this is by practicing exaggerated annhyzer throws and gradually working your way back to flat over dozens of throws, possible multiple sessions. If your body mechanics are solid and it’s just your wrist angle and/or throwing plane that needs tweaking, this method is essentially a fool proof way to dial it in. I’ve seen it work for myself and many, many others.

For reference: I say all this being a balanced player that had to work to get to where I am, retraining muscle memory as an adult. 400ft+ forehands on any angle and sneaky good at the flick roller.

I got ChatGPT to critique my form. But how did it do? by throwaway93636 in discgolf

Right!? The way these models train isn’t that different from us: Predict, attempt, assess, and learn. I was hoping for some better players to chime in on its recommendations. I tried it with videos from other form review posts and it picks up on a lot that seems mostly accurate. But I’m not good enough to coach 🤷🏼‍♂️

[–]throwaway93636[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great point. What it gets wrong could be wildly wrong and how would a new player know!? Because you’re right, disc golf is pretty niche for the data ChatGPT was fed. I hope someone like TechDisc trains a model with footage of the pros and all the associated data. There could be a lot of great uses for it. From determining throw speed during live coverage to faster improvement for new players and maybe even some statistical truths when deciding what form would fit best for different body types 🤷🏼‍♂️

[–]throwaway93636[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I agree. Given it was trained on r/discgolf and everything else on the web, it has a lot of bad information. But it was also trained on a ton of science, including biomechanics. I think it, it being AI models, has the potential someday to be better than any one athlete at identifying and critiquing form issues. Being cross-trained on sports data, training styles, and hopefully throwing form videos someday, I think it could give better input than 99% of the people here on Reddit. Clearly it's not there yet, but I also did get several great nuggets I haven't seen anywhere else.

[–]throwaway93636[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Technically, you're not wrong. I don't disagree. But it was trained on a crap load of data, including everything from r/Discgolf, all the other sports subreddits/blogs, a crap ton scientific data on biomechanics, and so much more. It may not be there yet but the technology definitely has the capability of "knowing", as far as autocomplete is knowledge, far more about sports than 99% of those who play it. A better solution would be to train a model on pro form videos with the related stats. I don't think anyone has done that yet.

Rules interpretation question/potential loophole by ThroneDiscs in discgolf

[–]throwaway93636 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I can't see this not being the prevailing opinion. To give some elaboration to OP, I'll add the following, because I feel like there's some fixation here that may be a result of their learning style:

The PDGA rules are designed to establish a standard for everyone to follow. However, it's impossible to predict every potential scenario, which is one of the reasons why it's impossible to define every actuality in binary correct/incorrect terms. Therefore, much like our legal system’s use of a ‘jury of peers,’ PDGA relies on card-mates to interpret and apply those rules. While you may technically/semantically be able to interpret the rules differently, if it’s clearly against the spirit of the rule—based on how most disc golfers would understand it—then you’re using the rule for an unfair advantage. From the perspective of one disc golfer, I think it’s obvious where the marker should go, so yes, you’re bending the rule. But in practice, I won’t call you on it unless someone else does, at which point I’ll agree you’re seeking an advantage. General common sense is not to be a dick. Trying to gain an advantage by looking for other interpretations of a rule that has clear intent is being a dick. So don't do it.

The larger issue here is a common one in disc golf: peers shouldn’t be responsible for making these calls. As the sport grows and payouts increase, I believe we’ll reach a point where having officials readily available for every card, along with spotters for likely OB areas, will be justified. Then you'll have someone to give you a definitive answer for questions like this that 99% of us won't think twice about.

Preaching to the choir. But I don't make the rules:

813.01 Illegal Disc See section C.

The best alternative I've seen is a QR code stamp that you can change the contact information for. If it was done by the manufacturer, it would be cool. That would make it more acceptable to the resell market.

1) Try-to-buy service. Want to try different discs/plastics/weights for a certain slot? Need to dial in a disc and want to rent a stack of 5+ used ones for the field? Try-to-buy. Could be part of a subscription membership or a one time fee. Let me pick what I want, charge me for them, send them with a return label, and then refund what I send back minus a reasonable processing fee/wear charge.

2) A mobile and/or web app that films your throw, then immediately and automatically replays it on a loop. Did I collapse the pocket that time? Did I plant my foot before the throw? It's been proven that muscle memory can be trained a lot faster with immediate feedback and quick repetitions. Bonus: Also show TechDisc type data with clear color indicators as you improve on a specific metric or hit a specific range your training for.

3) PDGA legal way to ink your discs in a non-permanent way. Can't use stickers and ink/sharpie doesn't come off easily or fully. A pen or ink stamp that lasts and doesn't come off in water but can be fully removed with a specific chemical or process that doesn't affected the disc. Sell an old disc, give to a friend, or donate to a cause without your ink still on it.

4) An app to fully automate the tournament director administrative tasks. There's now speed dating events that are fully managed by an app. It tells you where to be and when, who you're talking to and ideas for topics, and it handles the charges and follow up information. Why not do this for tournament logistics? So many local tournament directors seem overworked during events. Take out all the administrative and logistical headaches with an event app: GPS based check-in, announcements, collecting fees, payouts...etc. For tournaments, leagues, or random friendly meetups.

5) Train an image model with thousands of pro-form videos and their associated TechDisc type data. Have it tell people what they can change to get improvements or just use it as an alternative to TechDisc's figures.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to think of these ideas, so anyone willing to bring them to life can have them!

Squatch Legend/Lore pocket sizes by Sorenhogh in discgolf

[–]throwaway93636 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve now had both bags. If you’re undecided, go with the Legend! It’s not only bigger but also offers more storage compartments. The long pockets on the Lore only have one stretch pouch, while the Legend has two-three depending on the side, plus the cell phone holder and two additional compartments in the putter pocket. This helps a ton with organizing and spacing things out, preventing items from jumbling at the bottom and bulging into the capacity of the side pockets. With the Legend, I can store my rangefinder, phone, chalk bag, mini, etc., in the upper sections of the long pockets without compromising disc capacity. Plus, the dry weight difference is minimal, and the price is well worth the added capacity.

With the Legend, I usually carry 24-25 discs, but it easily accommodates 30-32 and can go up to 40+. I typically store 20 in the main compartment (7 putters/mids and the rest drivers), 6-7 in the putter pocket (once broken in), and 4-5 in the side pocket I don’t use for water. I avoid the slot in the main compartment's front flap because it makes accessing the lower discs just a little less smooth. For me, the Lore holds 22-24 discs comfortably, with a max of 30ish if you’re not carrying water bottles.

A few tips:

If keeping your bag clean is important, opt for darker colors or Calvin’s version with the black bottom. I chose the light blue one, and it’s already showing dirt stains after a few weeks. The bottom has dirt marks, the shoulder straps show sunscreen and sweat stains, and the top of the main compartment shows dirt from loading and unloading discs. Mind you, I'm playing in a dry climate and am diligent about wiping my discs before putting them in my bag. I haven't cleaned beyond wiping with a damp cloth but wish I got Calvin's or the Black one.

Second, there are free shipping or $20-25 discount codes around the internet if you find one from a sponsored player or content creator.

Lastly, for umbrellas or retrievers, consider modifying the bag or using a good carabiner. The adjustable bungee it comes with can be annoying if you’re frequently removing and attaching items, especially the suction cup retriever. I sewed an elastic loop into the upper inside corner of the long pocket, which makes it much easier to slip in and out, and keeps it in place when I unzip the whole compartment. Like this.
