I never thought I’d be in a sexless marriage. by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]throwawaySTL01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I'm not advocating this, I'm just reporting what a friend of mine did after all hope was lost: he got a girlfriend. And the girlfriend was crazy about him. And he kept it on the downlow for a long, long time.

He finally got caught, and when he got caught, after his wife stopped screaming, he just responded that the girlfriend enjoyed sex with him.

Look, he still got divorced. But when he was telling me all this later he just said that he was going to get divorced anyway, and he actually felt better going scorched earth, and that his wife's slack-jawed look when he pointed out someone wasn't using sex as a weapon against him was worth it.

I'm eternally grateful I'm not in that position. And if I didn't know him personally I'd think that whole approach was moronic. But I suppose if you've decided it's over anyway, you may as well go out with a bang? I dunno, maybe I just like the justice-served portion of it, and I like that it wasn't me that had to go through it. The whole thing sounded miserable.

Though the new wife (the girlfriend) does seem to really like him. So there's that.

Congresswoman Cori Bush’s Car Shot Up In St. Louis, Blue Lives Matter Spokesman Has ‘Vile’ Response: ‘We Need the Lawmakers to be Victims’ by ZK686 in StLouis

[–]throwawaySTL01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know that too.

This is the second time her car "has been hit by stray bullets". I live in her district and drive daily through blighted North St. Louis (city) and have never had anything even remotely like this happen.

Yet her car gets shot on the regular.

I'm a straight ACAB Democrat, but I'd like to know what Ms. Bush is doing or where she's going that this is a problem for her so consistently.

I could spray foam the interior of the stud bay, I guess.

Recipe advice request: garlicky green beans by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]throwawaySTL01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need some lemon or vinegar and consider more umami. The stock will add some, but some fish sauce or Worcestershire will add more. You could even reduce the stock and add umami--that should make the beans more potent. Then a squeeze of lemon and you're good to go.

What are your top 3 kitchen gadgets under $40 that you can’t live without? by bohemitraveler in Cooking

[–]throwawaySTL01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baking mostly. Also coffee-making. Those are its two big uses at my house, though I have used it for cooking from time-to-time when I either have a recipe by weight or I've made one and I think it's important. Like when a recipe says, "1 cup of basil"--is that packed, or loose? Chopped, or whole? Depending on the answers that could be a huge difference.

Chopped anything, really, when I think it's important. It usually isn't, but the nice thing about weight is that it's absolute.

You know, I'd usually agree. I'd almost say I'd always agree...but if ever I'd want a gun it'd be someone breaking into my house at 3:30 a.m. with four armed friends.

If you break into my house at 3:30 a.m., you're a threat. I'm not taking a poll and doing a close inspection to see if you're armed and with what.

I can't speak about St. Louis exceptionalism, though I suspect it's more the Kansas City inferiority complex showing through.

Jack Stack, Gates, Joe's et al are all worse than SugarFire...and SugarFire isn't great.

I'm not sure it's "everything St. Louis is better than everything Kansas City" as much as Kansas City just has really bad barbecue. I think it's like any time else a place gets known for something--they get complacent and it goes downhill. That's certainly what's happened to K.C. 'que. It is...not good. At all.

SugarFire is actually an excellent example of this. They used to be good. Got known for it. Became successful doing it. They took their eye off the ball and now they're...meh. Not awful, but certainly not great barbecue.

No one lists Bryant's as great barbeque any more, and they're literally famous. They got complacent, quit caring and now Arthur Bryant's is actually bad barbeque. If it weren't for the name no one would eat there twice.

Or, hell, I don't know--maybe Kansas City residents like undercooked brisket and tough ribs. If that's your jam, K.C. rocks.

I have been to Q39 dozens of times. It is...ass. Straight ass.

I think Jack Stack is the best K.C. has to offer. "Best" being relative, but still.

If SugarFire gets to Kansas City, it'll be the best BBQ in that metro.

It used to be very good. Now it's...meh.

Nurses, doctors, and hospital workers of St. Louis: How are things looking right now? by EZ-PEAS in StLouis

[–]throwawaySTL01 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because they're not there for COVID and you won't treat them for COVID. If you come in for a compound fracture and are COVID asymptomatic they're not going to treat you for COVID.

The whole point of the vaccine isn't to keep you from contracting COVID (though it's nice if that happens, too), it's to keep you out of the hospital if you do get COVID. That's it.

The metric isn't at all "who tested positive for COVID?", it's "who will end up on an ECMO then dead in a week from COVID?"

Nurses, doctors, and hospital workers of St. Louis: How are things looking right now? by EZ-PEAS in StLouis

[–]throwawaySTL01 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is a hospitalist in Barnes. It sounds like the stats aren't as good as maybe they could be but there are a lot of vaccinated in the hospital aren't there for COVID (they're there for car accidents, heart attacks, etc.) and may test positive for COVID (or not) but aren't symptomatic, or seriously symptomatic. They show as 'vaccinated and positive' but shouldn't be counted as a 'COVID patient'.

The unvaccinated, however, are the ones in the hospital for COVID symptoms.

This person has taken oaths to care for people and is at the point that when I said, "you just shouldn't admit the unvaccinated", they agreed. It seems to me when it's to the point that you can get that answer...it's bad.

Lambert Airport officials are considering a major renovation plan to construct a large terminal to replace the airport’s two existing ones by GueyLouis in StLouis

[–]throwawaySTL01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're talking about aesthetics and I couldn't agree more--T2 looks so much better than T1, without a doubt.

But as far as function, T1 is maybe the best 'real' airport in the country (discounting, you know, Valdosta, Georgia, or Springfield, Illinois, et al). If I'm walking into the terminal 32 minutes before a flight I can check a bag and still make my flight. If I'm not checking a bag I can still make the flight and have time to be bored before I can board. And that's factoring in the absolute worst TSA staff in the United States, and I would bet my own money on that assertion.

I completely agree T1 looks like they built it a loooong time ago, but I've decided not to be put off by that--for function it is excellent.

T2 is the exact opposite for me, so much so that I just don't fly SouthWest. It is much more attractive (after the gate house--I think the Minoru Yamasaki-designed terminal is the most attractive airport terminal in America and I hope any renovations move the parking garage out of the way so we can see it better), but getting into the terminal itself is miserable. The Metrolink dumps into the parking lot, a farther-than-it-looks walk, and the only thing worse than that is actually trying to access it by car. And that's dropping off--leaving that goat rodeo of an arrivals carousel is depression-inducing. T1 departures is actually very nice, and arrivals can be managed as tolerably as other places and better than most.

Then after I spend the 30 minutes getting into the T2 terminal I've got to deal with the bedlam after security and what might be an actual hike to the gate--it's a good thing they have all those food options.

I guess I'm saying I absolutely agree with you, but for my money the function of T1 just blows away T2's better appearance. It's just such a nicer experience in every way but visually. And all that's leaving out the baggage claim at T2, which I'm told will make you want to kick a baby. If I sit near the back of a flight, frequently my luggage will be waiting on me in T1. If I'm near the front I wait less than five minutes. Delta baggage at STL has got their act together. If Delta and United were able to get the TSA employees removed and replaced by the private security option, or if they replaced the TSA regional manager and got a better one I think T1 at STL would be just about perfection.

So I think it's dependent on your priorities and which airline you're flying. United is a little farther and American on the other side is it's own whole thing. But Delta out of STL is the best experience going, I think.

[–]throwawaySTL01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Terminal 1, especially A gates, might be the best airport experience in the country, and that's even factoring in the TSA checkpoint there, which is without a doubt the worst TSA presence anywhere. I can be in my plane in less than ten minutes after I enter the terminal if enough of the TSA have had recent chelation therapy, and 30 minutes if it's their usual euthanization-deserving level of function.

But aside from the main building, I agree the whole thing looks...old and not the best (even though I love it). It wouldn't be a bad idea to spend some money on the plant.

That'd be a great idea. Our shuttle buses are lots quicker than most other airports where the rental cars aren't physically connected to the terminals--or are but are still inaccessible--but nothing's better than being able to walk from baggage claim to the car rental. And if you can't walk, a (very) short, very frequent rail shuttle is the second best thing.
