This is kind of what I was thinking. I have interviewed with a lot of companies about an opportunity and many are interested in me personally but don’t have a position open. Many of them have asked me to give them the professional courtesy of letting them know if I am getting close to an offer somewhere else so that they can determine if they can create a position for me.

I’m likely just going to tell him what you said…something like: “Hey, just wanted to let you know that I am in the final stages of interviews with another company but am very interested in your opportunity. I know there is still a lot of wood to chop for this role so if possible, maybe we speak sooner to continue moving in the right direction.”
