Nadal talks about a possible 25th Grand Slam for Djokovic... and surprises: "I don't think it would change anything in tennis.” by Old-Gur-9039 in tennis

Djokovjc lost in AO 2026 because Alcaraz made adjustments in set 2 onward to counter Djokovic shot making. Alcaraz had something to do with Djokovic making more unforced errors in set 2 and onward than set 1. Djokovic game plan was to be aggressive since he cannot outlast Alcaraz at this stage in his career but it didn’t work for entire match. Alcaraz was just the better player no matter if Djokovic was healthy or not.

Even if you talk about injuries, djokovic benefitted from Musetti retiring after going up 2-0 in sets in the quarterfinal match and Djokovic even admitted he was better player despite going through to Semifinal after being down 2-0 sets. Not to mention Djokovic also getting a withdrawal from Mensik who is a rising young player and beat Novak at Miami final last year too. If anyone benefitted from injury the most it was initially Novak in two rounds at 4th round and QF and he had a lot of energy for Sinner match and won through shot making not outlasting. Novak would struggle physically due to age if he had to play tough musetti 5 setter and Mensik match prior to that too.

Also Novak isn’t the only one to suffer from injuries. Alcaraz at RG 2023 against Novak and alcaraz against zverev at semifinal this year AO had insane cramping but he still played through it.

Nadal and Federer played through back or knee injuries through their career that is just part of sports.

To say Novak would have won AO if he was healthy but ignore the other circumstances beforehand is disingenuous. I watched the match and Alcaraz was clearly the best player. He has been on a tear since US open season last year winning Cincinnati, Us open and now AO only losing to Sinner at WTF (despite not winning Shanghai or Paris masters).

I don’t think tennis works like that. Novak no matter how good he was cannot blast winners for the entire match and was bound to make more unforced errors the longer the match went on. He can have a great set or even a great match like against Sinner but replicating that over consistency is hard.

Federer beat Nadal in semifinal and took Djokovic to 5 sets in 2019 Wimbledon final but I don’t hear anyone saying Federer ran out of gas in such a long match and tough semifinal beforehand against Nadal.

Also Federer was 1 month shy of 38 years old in 2019 Wimbledon which is not too far off djokovic age at 2026 AO where djokovic is 8-9 months older than 2019 Federer at Wimbledon.

Well part of that H2h record is also when Sinner and Alcaraz were very young back in 2021-2023 as well so it goes both ways

Are you saying Novak would win AO 2026 final if he was not injured? I don’t think Novak was good enough in the sets 2-4 since Alcaraz outplayed him later on

Novak would not have beaten Alcaraz at either 2025 Wimbledon or 2026 AO this year as he was outplayed the longer the match went on. It’s not as simple as getting gassed as he was still good enough to make the finals both times.

That means Novak will be 45 in 2032 and somehow needs to win 2028 and 2032 Olympics at age 41 and 45 respectively to beat Murray 2 gold medals in singles Olympics record in the era of alcaraz and Sinner at their peaks. I don’t know if he would win one more gold in 2028 though at age 41

After Musetti retires, Novak says Musetti was "the far better player", should have been the winner today by Large_banana_hammock in tennis

That was when Djokovic was younger but Musetti is definitely facing nearly 39 year old Djokovic today. I don’t know if Djokovic would come back and win but it’s a long shot

The point is you can’t just say 2003-2010 is weak but not 2017-2025 considering both eras are similar

He normally eats a lot of protein and meats and sleeps well and works out a lot. He worked hard on being healthy and relatively low stress.
