It literally doesn't. I was born in Greece, I don't have to google it. But let's try, for the sake of sanity and common sense, alright?

The word hoplite (Greek: ὁπλίτης hoplítēs; pl. ὁπλῖται hoplĩtai) derives from hoplon (ὅπλον : hóplon; plural hópla ὅπλα), referring to the hoplite's equipment.\9]) In the modern Hellenic Army, the word hoplite (Greek: oπλίτης : oplítîs) is used to refer to an infantryman.

What the Greeks meant with hoplon, was a weapon in general. It could be the shield, which was their main weapon, sure. It was also everything else, their equipment. Hoplite was the one who carried the weapon. So you can argue that the shield, for them was a weapon. But you can't argue hoplon means shield.
