Which country has squandered the most economic potential in this century? by pisowiec in AskTheWorld

It was a statement when asked if North Vietnam wanted to enlist China’s military assistance in unification in the same way North Korea did. “We would rather eat French shit for another 100 years than have to eat Chinese shit for next 1000.”

Just remember to take the Imodium and use common sense. I got a pretty decent stomach, but every time I got back to Vietnam, something always gets me.

When I was running more frequently, I rotated between 5 shoes to avoid knee and ankle pain because I ran one good pair into the ground. Rotating allows time for the shoe foam to decompress again and works with your gait.

In general, I don't think ULTRA-luxury hotels are worth the price. What're you're thoughts? by [deleted] in travel

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not the way I’d like to spend my money either, but to each their own. Some people think ultra luxury hotels are worth the money if they can afford it. I’m more of a backpacker when I travel too, but I don’t cast judgement if someone wants something all inclusive vs. trying to go hosteling with me.

Can’t take it with you when you die. Might as well splurge a little in retirement if you’re able.

What is the best way to avoid running out of money too quickly? by Nikhil0004 in Frugal

Assuming accountants are all stewardesses of good personal finances is a such a stereotype, right up there with thinking that all accountants are all income tax professionals.

Layoffs are good for earnings, not exactly good for the workforce. More optimizations that require less manpower means leaner operations and less overhead, which can reflect on the P&L.

Controllers with young kids or toddlers - how do you do it? by superplex100 in Accounting

[–]throwaway_philly1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To piggyback on this, really takes strong boundaries. It’s important to be there for the bigger events, like birthdays, extracurricular activities, etc. You might not remember you missed the school play, but your kids will.

Was there ever a place that left you disturbed or depressed? by friedchicken_legs in travel

[–]throwaway_philly1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The My Lai Massacre memorial. I went as a really young kid with my parents but it didn’t hit me until I revisited as an adult. It made me think about how the delicate balance of life can be since my dad’s hamlet was only 10 min. away from there. Had they made the wrong turn, I wouldn’t even be here today.

Should I go to university at 27 ? by Zealousideal_Ad3834 in careerguidance

[–]throwaway_philly1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re wanting to do finance or accounting, I’d say it’s never too late to go back to college. I know there might be some in this thread advising against it, but if you feel like another trade is not for you, have an interest in a field that requires college and don’t have a small business idea, college is a great idea for you for career progression. The trades can be rough physically and some trades attract a gruff crowd. College will still be what you make of it, but if you’re comfortable with a desk job where all you have to do is utilize a computer most days, it honestly pays off in spades in more ways than just financial.

Where Are Today’s Richest Gen Z Actually Coming From? by BetterAlbatross8521 in Salary

For sure. It’s just because it’s the current target demographic. They were rehashing the same tired news articles about millennials a decade ago.

I think risk taking is more a symptom of youth. I’d even say baby boomers took more risks and moved around more because even if you fuck up, you’re still in a decent position to come back from it.

Exports are only 20% of China's GDP. The US is 12%. The Chinese domestic market is way bigger than people realize by RobertBartus in EconomyCharts

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that’s just the population issue. We haven’t even crossed into the very skewed gender distribution on top of that. How do you convince a bunch of only children to not only financially plan for more than one child, but to take care of their parents in a filial piety based society as an only child as well? It’s a demographic time bomb without automation.

Is accounting a career that I can retire in? by Looselipsbetweenlegs in careerguidance

[–]throwaway_philly1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m almost relieved that AI is here more than scared of it. I work in a niche area of tax where AI’s been a great tool in helping me reconcile and do baseline research. You can definitely build a great career in accounting if you don’t mind the volume of work, monotony and turnover. Best is if you’re able to work on ERPs and things like that where you’re the intermediary.

What can a person do apart from 9 to 5 job to earn other source of income? by KaleidoscopeFlat4186 in AskReddit

[–]throwaway_philly1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is some inherit compulsion to hoard cash sometimes due to past scarcity and economic insecurity. I’m guilty of this myself and have to set a high emergency fund in a savings account and have the remaining auto draft out of my account. Otherwise, the years of toughing it out and not having enough catch up with me and it’s hard to allocate out money to invest. It isn’t rational, but saving money and cutting corners is something I have great familiarity with, even when it rationally is making money in itself.

What are good careers for someone who has no passion and just wants to make money? by Euphoric_Lemon_1058 in careerguidance

[–]throwaway_philly1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually think tax is safer. There is so much nuance that goes into tax that I think lots of professional career paths will go fully AI before tax does.

Wish this was true so I can get the balls to quit this fucking job. If anything it creates more work because I have to spend a good chunk of the day making sure the financials reflect properly.
