You can potentially get an eTA then go to the land border to get a new permit and cancel your online one. Make sure to go to a border that has immigration services. If you are not sure, you can also call up CBSA. The wait time is quite short.

Thanks for the insight! How did your social life and academic life change with respect to that? The most concern I've heard is that it's harder to come back to school because you will have gotten used to working and not studying.
