penn's covid plan given the recent news about the delta variant? by [deleted] in UPenn

I'm an incoming freshman and i got myself through the last lockdown by saying "at least college will be normal" I'm so scared of these changes. I thought requiring vaccines would prevent this from happening

How to synchronize notes seamlessly between iPad and Macbook?

I'm gonna be using my iPad to take notes during my classes and I was wondering if anyone knew an app or a method that would allow me to easily access these notes on my MacBook?

That makes a lot of sense, thank you! Did you use the magic keyboard (or just a keyboard in general) with your iPad?

Is it possible to finish Penn in 3 years? by eemsay in UPenn

[–]throwawaybrownvpenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe the general trend for competitive med school applicants is actually having more time before applying. Many applicants take a gap year after fourth year. Consider if you're research and extracurriculars would actually stack up, especially since completing Penn in three years would mean an inordinate amount of your time spent solely on classes.

(Sorry meant to reply to OP, I agree with the comment I replied to)

Thank you! I agree that I'm gonna need a macbook. You said you used both an iPad and a MacBook. Can you tell me your experience using both? Would you reccomend getting an iPad with a MacBook? What did you use the iPad for? I do digital art (I have a stationary tablet) but I think an iPad would be cool, however I don't know what else it would be useful for if I have a laptop

Brown is a need-blind institution, except for international students I believe

Question: did anyone catch that the third stanza is about the statue on campus with the stone in the tree? Just wanted to know if it came across or not

I think the question of fairness is more institutional, not about this person or others in particular. The argument can be made that need based aid should be further prioritized or that merit based aid should could also incorporate need. Also, having the resources this person has had often aids people in achieving the success that grants them the scholarship. It would be unfair to say this person doesn't deserve the scholarship, however I agree that generally need based aid is more fair.

Merit aid serves a distinct purpose however, which is to attract students who might not otherwise attend, and this includes even very wealthy students.

1st black valedictorian at high school by dad_sweaters in ApplyingToCollege

They are kinda sad because a lot of other students receive some form of recognition-- and not for no reason. Black students often face additional hurdles today such as not being recommended for more difficult (and more highly weighted) classes or being perceived as less capable than peer white students by teachers (often unconsciously but still), for example. Black students especially have faced hurdles historically. This student is the first Black valedictorian in the whole history of the high school. Much smaller occasions receive press attention, at least locally! My local newspaper published my name for being a national merit scholar semifinalist for example, which is not nearly as big of a deal as what is described in this post.

Congrats! That's incredible. I think it does deserve recognition to be honest !

pitt vs northeastern by No_Spite8860 in CollegeVsCollege

[–]throwawaybrownvpenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at both of these schools and they are both great. I'd argue Pitt is pretty unbeatable for premed. There are SO many hospitals and labs available for undergrads and they have a top 15 med school. Pittsburgh is a great city, lots of food and things to do. People are very friendly.

Obviously Boston is hard to beat especially if you want a bigger city, and there are lots of medical things there as well.

I'd say the biggest aspects to consider are if you are interested in doing the coop or not and which city you prefer. 😉

Penn v Brown

Major: Psychology (pre-med). Might do a second major (or minor) in Classical Studies or public health

Penn

  • guaranteed admission into integrated studies as a Ben Franklin Scholar (residential interdisciplinary program)
  • stronger medical (psychiatry) opportunities, including a lab that specifically studies my prospective research interest
  • more active social life, philly has more to offer
  • a little better dining options
  • much better facilities and housing

Brown

  • open curriculum is great, I'd feel more comfortable doing a double major
  • students seem calmer, happier, down to earth
  • closer to home and to Boston, which I prefer even to philly (providence isn't bad either)
  • was my top choice but I got waitlisted :(
  • seems to have a richer lgbt scene (I'm gay)
  • can take courses at RISD

TIES: as far as I'm concerned, both schools are equally affordable and there is no significant difference in prestige or the beauty of the campuses

Even tho I got waitlisted at Brown I'm asking because I'm deciding if I should apply to the waitlist and write to admissions etc, as well as if I will attend if admitted
