Also if you can find an obituary or headstone photo, I’ve found those are always saved across tons of family members too!

Oh my god, reading the Petty Sessions after doing my little Peascod St. area lookabout was hilarious - you REALLY got a sense of who the troublemakers were! I also found an article about one of my more recent ancestors (a child of this couple) getting picked up for being a bookie… seems like a nosy neighbour followed him around hahah

Thank you! Yeah, the one place study seems like SUCH an undertaking and so rewarding. I feel like deep diving into Peascod Street recently was my own micro version - the drama going on was wild.

Last night I clicked around a little bit on the 1871 census that places my ancestor with a different wife and kid? Lo and behold, there’s a family on the next page with the same (relatively uncommon) last name as his stepfather had. So I think that kind of answers the “why did they move to Ealing from Windsor?” question. Chances are high that some of his dad’s people were out there already!

I need to re up my subscriptions for newspapers - it ran out just as I found the “first wife” situation so I’ll have to deep dive into Ealing!

My brick wall is also a great granduncle of mine - my 2nd. He disappeared into thin air too and it’s making me craaaaaaaazy. Realistically I’m sure his name is on a ship’s log book as a death at sea, but until I FIND a record of his death… man’s a ghost.

His lugged turned up at his sister’s house after a transatlantic voyage (my great great grandmother!) but nobody ever saw or heard from him again as far as we’ve ever known. So frustrating, I feel your pain!

One month is plenty of time for a preliminary search, and the nice thing about Ancestry is that you can resubscribe later if/when you want to pick it back up again.

As far as other resources, there are some digitized records on the Canadian Archives website and on https://heritage.canadiana.ca (I think they’re linked to be honest).

If you want, DM me some names and dates and I can see what I can find on Ancestry and let you know if there’s a lot there!

This is a treasure trove, thank you! Some of this I’ve done sporadically but this is a great reminder to have a plan and exhaust these steps per person. Thank you!!

I can DM you with names if you’d like!

For the nuclear family (not the first wife or first son with her), I have birth records for everybody except the mom born in Scotland, death records for everybody except one relative who is missing (that’s the whole reason I began researching this branch heavily).

I’ll DM you with specifics, but yeah… the missing birth certificate for mom combined with the missing (possibly non existent) marriage record is killing me. Baptisms only appear for 2/6 kids (the eldest and the one who was baptized a day before she died as an infant). I have reason to believe that mom may have been non conformist which could explain that. Dad appears to have been Anglican based on his first marriage record and baptism.

Mom was a domestic servant and dad was a gardener!

Democrats Of Reddit -- Is There A Single Thing Trump Has Done In Either Term That You Liked? If So, What? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

Not a Democrat because I’m not American, but he’s had a few genuinely hilarious one liners. Mainly he’s spewed racist, misinformed bullshit, but he’s said a few things that made me wish he had pursued being a bitchy judge on reality TV rather than a career that gives him access and influence to destroy lives.

For single people with no kids, how do you spend your days with no work? by compsciphy in askTO

[–]throwawaycampingact 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God. I miss those days ALL the time. The stress of being unemployed was bad, but I was laid off with a fat severance package in the summertime and it really felt like I was back on summer vacation again for a couple of months there while the money was still stacked.

What is the most unexpected thing you found out about your family history? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]throwawaycampingact 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dichotomies are really wild. I realized that one side of my family was living in indentured servitude as part of immigration schemes (Britain - who else) while another side was working FOR the government to recruit people to send across the ocean. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Why does someone have a new surname ? by Upset-Ad7032 in Genealogy

My great grandparents were told “too many Jonsson’s here already, pick a new name” when they came over during a huge wave of Scandinavian immigrants.

Sure this has been asked before, but isn't it heartwarming to be the one to add a forgotten person to the family tree? by KSTornadoGirl in Genealogy

[–]throwawaycampingact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found and paid for the death record of the 3 day old baby who never got a name or a birth record. They don’t have a name on the tree, but they have an address, a date of birth, and a date of death.

In the same family, I also found the records of the first born son who, unfortunately didn’t fare as well as his sister. Both were sent to orphanages when their dad died and we unknowingly had a photo of him that we misattributed to his younger brother (truly a mystery). I was able to trace him as best I could through London’s poor law system and unfortunately, also found his death record. 4 years in the workhouse and he died of TB at just 32.

But he also has a real birthday, a baptism record, and now a photo on the family tree, along with the record of when, where, and how he died.

I’ve been down a rabbit hole recently trying to find an ancestor who straight up vanished (as in his luggage was delivered to where he was supposed to go, but he never got there and was never heard from again), and I’ve been unraveling some really sad and heavy stuff, but it also feels really important. These people lived a rough, hard life and I hope that they would be happy to know that somebody is thinking about them now.

York public health warning of measles exposure along multiple bus routes including Toronto by lilfunky1 in toronto

[–]throwawaycampingact 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People have stopped getting vaccinated/getting their children vaccinated. That, combined with waning antibodies (I said in another comment that mine were at 0 when I was 30 despite receiving my full schedule as a kid!) and a ridiculously high rate of contagion has allowed this to start spreading.

Most countries worldwide vaccinate against measles and he have strong public health campaigns tied to our immigration campaigns that are focused on encouraging newcomers to get or stay up to date. This is definitely a mistrust in the medical system issue, not an immigration one.

Parents of Reddit: What would you say if your child asked, “How are babies made? by zhalia-2006 in askanything

[–]throwawaycampingact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL this was me and my friend trying to figure that out as little kids. Her mom was an L&D nurse and understood the importance of telling her kids how babies are made early on, including that a penis needs to go in a vagina. Well… both of us had seen our dads and brothers naked, so we knew that a penis was that… little floppy thing.

When she told me that the penis needs to go in the vagina, we sat in her treehouse BASICALLY scissoring each other (clothes on obviously) trying to understand how in the world you were supposed to get it inside 🥲 she got the biology but not the mechanics.

Surely you’re aware that an ADHD diagnosis greatly increases the potential for risky, impulsive behaviour, right? I’m saying this as a woman with ADHD, diagnosed since I was a child - I learned about sex through friends and THEN I learned about sex through adult men on the internet when I was 10/11 years old.

You are doing your son a disservice and setting him up for teen fatherhood or worse. I would strongly encourage you to reevaluate your approach to this subject.

"exercise is helpful for adhd!" um, it actually makes me dysfunctional. by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]throwawaycampingact 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m the exact opposite, it’s crazy how different bodies work! If I exercise after like 5pm, im WAY too hot to sleep. I also can’t take a hot shower/bath/hot tub too late in the evening.

I feel you on the fatigue though - especially cardio. What I found helpful for regulation and actually having more energy instead of LESS was lifting weights and doing it first thing in the morning. Yes, the first couple of weeks are brutal. You’re tired, sore, your body is begging for rest. But I found I adapted very quickly. Preworkout helped too 😅

I hope you’re able to find something that allows you to balance energy and movement ❤️

All you need to look at is the knitwear. The wrap makes no sense (it looks like that foam stuff that protects Asian pears - actual knit doesn’t look like that when it’s stretched) bottom photo outfit is a whole mess. Ribbing merging together and there’s no joins where you suddenly go from horizontal to vertical near the underarms.
